there's really not much to choose between 'em at this point - xbox one is maybe better as an all-round media player, ps4 is still usually (marginally) better on resolution / framerates? i guess it comes down to which controller you prefer and which system has the more attractive exclusives.

(and, if multiplayer matters to you, where most of your friends will be playing, i guess)

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 13:27 (eight years ago) link

why is the xbone a better media player? what are its strengths?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 18:09 (eight years ago) link

not so much that it's a great player so much as the ps4 is weirdly lacking in stuff like dnla streaming

are we setting up an ILX PS4 community now that 3.00 is out

I was going to say the same thing regarding the lack of DLNA (which irritated me to the point of upgrading the firmware on my TV so I could use it), but apparently there was a media player update earlier in the year that added DLNA for PS4.

buying a ps4 this week - i was xbox the last few gens but i was always playstation before that.

do i dare ask the "what games do i get" question here? i was going to start with metal gear, and then maybe pro evo for old time's sake, after reading the new one is good. possibly the last of us. after that not sure.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Thursday, 1 October 2015 08:56 (eight years ago) link

actually was just xbox for the 360. never liked the controller.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Thursday, 1 October 2015 08:56 (eight years ago) link

Bloodborne and Batman are both p great, the former in particular is essential

Neil S, Thursday, 1 October 2015 09:00 (eight years ago) link

what I be mostly playing (bought my ps4 two months back) - Last Of Us, Witcher 3, Wolfenstein New Order, Rocket League, Destiny, Rayman Legends

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 1 October 2015 12:08 (eight years ago) link

get a ps+ sub for sure, it's a fun way to get new stuff monthly.

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 1 October 2015 12:25 (eight years ago) link

So i picked up the "Military Appreciation Bundle" yesterday, which came with Last of Us and NBA2k15 (and an extra controller). I got Bloodborne, Destiny - Legendary Edition, Metal Gear Solid V (I also bought Ground Zeroes online...which I just beat...in like 2 hours), and Assassin' Creed Lolity.

I was reticent because I disliked the PS2 so much but this is a pretty impressive system.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 1 October 2015 14:53 (eight years ago) link

there are people out there who hate ps2?

circa1916, Thursday, 1 October 2015 14:55 (eight years ago) link

i didn't like the PS2 either (or the PS1 for that matter), got on the board with the later systems

Nhex, Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:26 (eight years ago) link

Military Appreciation Bundle

wait what

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:38 (eight years ago) link

Yeah. The only PS4s they had were the Destiny Taken King White Special Edition and this "Military Appreciation Bundle", which is just a regular PS4 with a big American flag on a slip box cover. But it came with those two games and an extra, camo design controller. And 3 free months of PSPlus, which I take is standard anyway. Same price though.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:57 (eight years ago) link

worth it for the free controller and Last of Us, even if they lamely include last year's NBA game

Nhex, Thursday, 1 October 2015 16:23 (eight years ago) link

you can get a good 20 hours out of MGS:GZ betw all the difft modes and objectives

in some ways it's kinda a better, more refined/concentrated MGS:V

hot doug stamper (||||||||), Thursday, 1 October 2015 18:12 (eight years ago) link

Thanks for the heads up on the military appreciation thing- I'm still pricing out bundles for an eventual buy in the next few months, and that looks like the best deal by far (especially since i can sell the NBA game). Dunno why both this and the regular The Last of Us bundle don't include it on a disc, though.

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Thursday, 1 October 2015 22:10 (eight years ago) link

man oh man do I love the XBOne controller; if it's not a game I'll be cross-playing on mobile I'll buy it for Xbox simply so that I can enjoy that fantastic controller. can't wait for the PC adapter to come out in November so that I can use a wireless one with my HTPC .

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Monday, 5 October 2015 06:20 (eight years ago) link

Has anyone seen if there's going to be a PS4 bundle with a 1TB drive that doesn't require paying an extra premium for a Call of Duty game and a ridiculous black-and-orange console?

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Monday, 12 October 2015 18:19 (eight years ago) link

Or - get a good deal on a 500gb system, buy this 2TB external drive, crack it open and stuff it into your PS4, voila 2TB PS4

Nhex, Monday, 12 October 2015 18:34 (eight years ago) link

p awful user experience that you get a new ps4 and as you try to play it it endlessly keeps downloading updates and patches for the game you want to play. with about 15 clickthrough menus about update 1.001 or whatever. guess i'll watch tv while patch two downloads for another 20 minutes.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 12 October 2015 20:59 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, that has been my experience since I got it. Extra controller is a must. These babies can't handle my marathoning.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 12 October 2015 21:02 (eight years ago) link

i had to get fifa with it as it was cheaper than without - but i intend to get the new pro evo and maybe trade fifa in. i got metal gear solid - will probably get dentistry or perhaps batman also.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 12 October 2015 21:04 (eight years ago) link

any of you have the new pro evo? i'm LOCALGARDA if so - literally just turned it on.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 18:38 (eight years ago) link

I've never owned two consoles simultaneously, and I've never owned Playstation. I went with the Xbox One because that's the route most of my friends went. But I really really really want to play two PS4 exclusives, Until Dawn and Last of Us. Just not sure I want to invest 380 dollars for two games. There are no other Playstation exclusives I want to play. Decisions, decisions.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Saturday, 24 October 2015 14:16 (eight years ago) link

wait til Black Friday deal, buy & play those two games & then sell the lot?
I've been playing Dragon Quest Heroes and ehhhhh this game is not doing it for me, the maps are too small and I dislike tower defense games and was unaware that was a key mechanic in this game.

Wow I guess XB1 sales are really that bad that they need to hide the sales now... but I would've been more optimistic with the holiday bundles (Halo 5/Tomb Raider Reboot 2/Fallout 4/Forza Whatever).

four months pass...

Xbox One at $300 next week, or PS4 at $350? Will Sony drop the PS4 price in response to the Xbox price drop (which is temporary but expected to go permanent shortly after)?

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 18 March 2016 16:10 (eight years ago) link

if u have to play "knack" the answer is clear

am0n, Friday, 18 March 2016 16:39 (eight years ago) link

different is, PS4 doesn't need to pricedrop as it's actually selling

jamiesummerz, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:48 (eight years ago) link

one deciding factor for me (i bought my PS4 late last year) was the general sense that most of my friends were gravitating toward PS4 and that it seems to have more momentum. that doesn't mean it's a better system, but it probably means you'll have more people to play multiplayer with (if that's a thing for you) and that there will be more system exclusives/games coming out for PS4 first, etc.

PS4.5? http://kotaku.com/sources-sony-is-working-on-a-ps4-5-1765723053

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 18 March 2016 17:59 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I'm still leaning PS4.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 18 March 2016 19:17 (eight years ago) link

the one thing that tempts to eventually get an XBone is MS's backwards compatibility commitment (for the moment) which is nice considering the bajillion 360 games, physical and digital, that i have backlogged

but otherwise PS4 feels like the runaway winner at this point

Nhex, Friday, 18 March 2016 21:10 (eight years ago) link

Sony is still pushing 4K, huh

Xbox One Spring Bundle

or

refurb PS4?

?

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 8 July 2016 16:14 (seven years ago) link

forgot I basically asked about this four months ago

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 8 July 2016 16:15 (seven years ago) link

all the free games in the bundle would be nice but none of them really look like my kind of games, plus i usually just play one game at a time. so should probably get the refurb ps4 and a game i actually want to play.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 8 July 2016 16:16 (seven years ago) link

good advice

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Friday, 8 July 2016 16:28 (seven years ago) link

I will never buy a refurb again if I can help it. Or, rather, I would prefer to be the one doing the refurbing if it came down to it.

some anal dread (Old Lunch), Friday, 8 July 2016 17:11 (seven years ago) link

that's what I was just going to ask, if refurb is ok or not. reading online it seems pretty risky.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 8 July 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

I would avoid a refurb just because deals are/will be plentiful with the new/slim/upgraded consoles coming out. Though X1 has already seen massive cuts this year, PS4 deals will be coming soon enough. Not to mention VR...

Nhex, Friday, 8 July 2016 19:30 (seven years ago) link

Based on the research I did after my old PS3 went tits-up, if you do get a refurb, make sure that they have legitimately reballed the GPU and haven't just done a reflow. The difference being that the reflow just involves melting the existing solder and is much less reliable, whereas a reball involves completely replacing all of the solder points on the GPU. It's more involved and therefore more expensive but well worth it if you want something that's going to last. And from what I've read, a professional reball may very well improve on the work done in the factory.

Waking Up Is For Suckers (Old Lunch), Friday, 8 July 2016 19:41 (seven years ago) link

but there's no way to know what was done in refurbishing a specific console, right? i guess unless you have the knowledge to open it up and see for yourself.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 8 July 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

I feel like this chip shortage might end up giving my xbox one a slightly longer shelf life in terms of developers not wanting to release stuff only for next-gen consoles :)

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Saturday, 10 April 2021 04:12 (three years ago) link

Yeah they’ll release games for the prior gen and they’ll run badly and then they’ll apologize to the small number of complainers or whatever

I sold my XBox One X thinking I could get a PS5 this spring to play Tony Hawk and MLB.

Oooooops.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Sunday, 11 April 2021 03:18 (three years ago) link

I know they couldn't have predicted the chip shortage (is this the same shortage hampering car production?), but it really feels like they rushed the release of PS5 and nu Xbox. Like, it could have waited a year to have the same impact, imo.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 11 April 2021 14:02 (three years ago) link

i believe it is the same chip shortage affecting cars

it seems like 6-7 years in the standard gap between Sony systems ('94, '00, '06, '13, '20). I agree one extra year would've been fine

for comparison
Xbox was '01, '05, '13
Nintendo was '83, '90, '96, '01, '06, '12, '17
