there's at least 2 howl-with-laughter moments in every episode, mind

four months pass...

Hard to think of any show ever really which has been more self-referential and reliant on callbacks than this is at the moment, though it's still consistently laugh out loud funny. I just wonder what someone new to the whole thing would make of recent episodes.

I recently re-watched this show from the beginning and I had forgotten how much gets established early on. Like, in the 4th episode they introduce the waitress + Charlie's infatuation w her, Artemis, Dee's acting ambitions, and Mac's infatuation with Carmen the transexual. Almost everything the show calls back to (including most of the recurring characters) is set up by the end of the 2nd season.

and it's all pretty basic: McPoyles as arch enemies, Cricket as perpetual stooge, Mac's mom is a lump, Charlie's mom is a deluded whore, Mac's dad is a psycho ex-con etc.

pretty easy target but loved the 80s movie spoof, kudos for getting Chainsaw. I know he was in Ski School and that's more appropriate, but he'll always be Chainsaw to me. And Hot Dog is the skiing movie of my youth.

The Jessie's Girl scene in this weeks episode cracked me up in this episode.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia takes the show continuity to Star Trek levels, more than even Seinfeld.

Obviously after the blizzard this week, I'd have to think "The Gang Get Snowed In" could be an episode. (They once did do a hurricane show.)

oh shit didn't even know there were new episodes already

Οὖτις, Monday, 25 January 2016 18:29 (eight years ago) link

I've never watched an 80s skiing movie (didn't really know they existed), but that episode did a good job of letting me know what they're like.

yeah. I thought the last season or two wasn't so great but this season is killing it. At first I thought it was being too meta/callback based, but despite that/within that they're really trying new things and succeeding. At the beginning of the last episode I thought it wasn't gonna be great, but it was really special. Glad he didn't get a botch toe too.

omg @ this finale

Οὖτις, Friday, 11 March 2016 21:34 (eight years ago) link

just watched the last episodes of the season. so good! they make excellent villains here! it's amazing they have been able to maintain quality for this long this consistently imo.

i liked the courtroom drama one, where Charlie is a bird lawyer, and his uncle makes an appearance representing them in court, wearing gloves that look like hands. the boat one was incredible too -- one of those where the show takes a sudden turn into action movie territory and the characters play both hero and villain. "Charlie Catches A Leprechaun" was insane.

seven months pass...

i've seen tons of episodes on netflix and plane rides and stuff but i've never really watched the show in order, so i started it from episode 1 earlier this week. the first season...is not that great? no one really seems into their groove yet, and the characters aren't as distinct as they are later on. charlie in particular seems a lot more alert and normal than the foggy version of himself i'm used to in later episodes

k3vin k., Friday, 11 November 2016 20:24 (seven years ago) link

charlie knows how to read in Season 1!

Οὖτις, Friday, 11 November 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link

just about every american sitcom is way more defined in season 2 than it is in season 1.

Clay, Friday, 11 November 2016 20:36 (seven years ago) link

I remember watching s1 when it aired and not being really into it - but around the time DeVito joins the cast they really hit their stride

Οὖτις, Friday, 11 November 2016 20:37 (seven years ago) link

yeah i already love the show i've seen probably half the episodes here or there, it's just interesting seeing how different it seems

k3vin k., Friday, 11 November 2016 20:38 (seven years ago) link

as lagoon says upthread tho they do establish some things pretty early -- dee's acting classes, dennis and the "tranny" (and his general repressed homosexuality), charlie and the waitress, etc

k3vin k., Friday, 11 November 2016 20:39 (seven years ago) link

mac, not dennis obv

k3vin k., Friday, 11 November 2016 20:40 (seven years ago) link

javelin watched since s 5 or so. not sure why it was still good

Spottie, Friday, 11 November 2016 20:41 (seven years ago) link

javelin=havent

Spottie, Friday, 11 November 2016 20:41 (seven years ago) link

yeah a LOT of the recurring characters are there from the start. Isn't there one episode that introduces like three main recurring character, incl the waitress...?

Οὖτις, Friday, 11 November 2016 20:42 (seven years ago) link

xp

Οὖτις, Friday, 11 November 2016 20:42 (seven years ago) link

oh I see I already covered this:

I recently re-watched this show from the beginning and I had forgotten how much gets established early on. Like, in the 4th episode they introduce the waitress + Charlie's infatuation w her, Artemis, Dee's acting ambitions, and Mac's infatuation with Carmen the transexual. lol yes that was the post i was referring to i thought i remembered it being lagoon

k3vin k., Friday, 11 November 2016 20:46 (seven years ago) link

s1 is pretty bad, i agree that devito coming in is where it improves. not necessarily bc of him but it's a good dividing line.

na (NA), Friday, 11 November 2016 20:48 (seven years ago) link

i love their high-concept episodes, especially the one where the bar tries to win an award and the (mostly) one-take episode about fooling the health inspector

na (NA), Friday, 11 November 2016 20:50 (seven years ago) link

dennis's natural leadership abilities and general sociopathic tendencies haven't really shown up too much yet either. sweet dee seems like the most fully fleshed out so far

k3vin k., Friday, 11 November 2016 21:00 (seven years ago) link

dee is nicer/more reasonable at the beginning of the show, iirc kaitlyn olsen went to the dudes eventually and told them she didn't want to be the nagging woman character any more so they started making her more pathetic and weird

na (NA), Friday, 11 November 2016 21:15 (seven years ago) link

"the gang finds a dead guy" is great LOL watching now

k3vin k., Friday, 11 November 2016 21:26 (seven years ago) link

i don't remember dennis smoking either

k3vin k., Friday, 11 November 2016 22:11 (seven years ago) link

they just made the pilot themselves for like $30, p cool
