I haven't heard this yet, how does it compare to their previous stuff?

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Wednesday, 26 August 2015 18:12 (eight years ago) link

On first listen (so apply liberal grains of salt), I'm leaning towards "return to form". A bit front-loaded perhaps, but doesn't wear out its welcome.

very brief discussion of the new one on Rolling Metal

He Is = one of 2015's best songs

alpine static, Thursday, 27 August 2015 07:34 (eight years ago) link

almost embarrassed by how much I like this album

it me, Thursday, 27 August 2015 18:44 (eight years ago) link

when i return to normal life, i.e. next week when mk2 goes back to school and i go back into the office,
this is top of the list to help me get through the week.

mark e, Thursday, 27 August 2015 18:59 (eight years ago) link

suspect that the more excessive/prog/psych they become the more i will love them.

mark e, Thursday, 27 August 2015 19:01 (eight years ago) link

Old-school Satan worship filtered through contemporary Swedish pop production. The record's producer, Klas Ahlund, has previously worked with Robyn, Britney Spears and Katy Perry.

that moment at the end of "Spirit" where Papa Emeritus hits the high note on "spiiiiii-iiii-riiiiiit" right into the dope riff is ace

HE IS

"from the pinnacle to the pit" is molten blue oyster cult / uriah heep alloy

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 4 September 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link

My impression of the new one is that it will appeal especially to people who liked the debut but thought the band lost the path on the second.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 4 September 2015 19:47 (eight years ago) link

told you

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 10 September 2015 23:05 (eight years ago) link

let's rank the hooks on this thing:

1. all of He Is

2. "You are cast out from the heavens to the ground. Blackened feathers falling down"

3. "Put your hands up and reach for the sky / cry for absolution!"

4. "The world is on fi-yahhh, and you are here to stay and burn with me"

what else?

alpine static, Friday, 11 September 2015 02:36 (eight years ago) link

"Old oneeeeeeee...masterrrrrrrrrr"

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 11 September 2015 04:14 (eight years ago) link

If the title of "mummy dust" wasn't the same, I'd have no idea what papa is saying

calstars, Friday, 11 September 2015 05:54 (eight years ago) link

originally thought it was latin

There is a certain volume at which this gets really good

calstars, Friday, 11 September 2015 21:37 (eight years ago) link

what, "off"?

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 11 September 2015 21:39 (eight years ago) link

(I don't think this at all, I fell on that sword so no other jokester could zing Ghost itt)

There is a certain volume at which this gets really good

agree 100% ...

put the album on earlier at a good volume, and it totally opened up.

mark e, Friday, 11 September 2015 21:51 (eight years ago) link

I'm mostly listened to it on headphones thus far.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 11 September 2015 21:51 (eight years ago) link

Def Lep chorus on Absolution comes out of fucking nowhere

calstars, Friday, 11 September 2015 22:20 (eight years ago) link

still can't figure out why the vocals are a dealbreaker for so many. can't imagine Ghost without them

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 11 September 2015 22:21 (eight years ago) link

yeah. pfork review was baffling.

pdf booklet in the cheesecaked factory (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 11 September 2015 22:27 (eight years ago) link

also for calling deus in absentia a weaker song or something like that

pdf booklet in the cheesecaked factory (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 11 September 2015 22:28 (eight years ago) link

just really curious why *this* is the band in 2015 that metalheads are defensive about when the Butcher Babies exist.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 11 September 2015 22:32 (eight years ago) link

Def Lep chorus on Absolution comes out of fucking nowhere

I've been picking up Def Lep vibes in a few places on this as well. I guess it's the sweet harmonies, multiple bridge/chorus hooks, and slick production.

o. nate, Saturday, 12 September 2015 01:54 (eight years ago) link

First 40 seconds of He Is is very Interpol like

calstars, Saturday, 12 September 2015 02:11 (eight years ago) link

He Is sounds a lot like shack/mick head

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 12 September 2015 02:23 (eight years ago) link

xp the vocals, yeah. the instruments are not very interpol at all, though.

pdf booklet in the cheesecaked factory (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 12 September 2015 03:32 (eight years ago) link

i'm helping my folks move into their new place tomorrow and I feel like I could play this for her and she might like something like "He Is" without realizing she's humming along to delightful chewy little paeans to Satan.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Saturday, 12 September 2015 03:47 (eight years ago) link

"and you're doing fine, worshipping your Lord"

calstars, Saturday, 12 September 2015 21:59 (eight years ago) link

I love the choral breakdown at the end.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Saturday, 12 September 2015 22:06 (eight years ago) link

So the humor here is pretty evident. If that's the case, that they're taking the piss, then the conclusion from a religious belief standpoint is that they are laughing at the ridiculousness of either the existence of Satan or his personality.

calstars, Saturday, 12 September 2015 23:12 (eight years ago) link

Mummy Dust is skippable, the rest of this essential (interludes aside)

anyone seen Purson? i've never heard a note.

i'm three hours from the closest show and srsly considering making the drive, if Purson's great live it'd make my decision a lot easier

tomorrow night - Orlando. this could be a show of the year candidate!

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Saturday, 10 October 2015 05:14 (eight years ago) link

we know the titles but the original artists?

See No Evil - could be one of several
Jesus He Knows Me - Genesis
Hanging Around - The Stranglers maybe?
Phantom Of The Opera - Iron Maiden probably?
We Don't Need Another Hero - Tina Turner

StanM, Sunday, 9 April 2023 17:25 (one year ago) link

Despite loving Ghost I'm usually underwhelmed by their covers but that one was pretty good. Really liked Bible too, from years ago.

Also

[Lt. Huff smells a mask]

Lt. Huff: It's urine.

Lt. Steve Milford: Oh thank God. Phil thought it might be semen.

Lt. Huff: Phil needs to talk to a therapist.

the cover art for the EP is giving me big Maiden/Eddie vibes

I haven't heard the whole EP yet, but it is the Television "See No Evil", The Stranglers' "Hanging Around" and definitely Maiden.

Yeah, the Tina cover is crazy good, which really threw me. I had the lowest expectations for that one, but man do they crank up the bombast in a fun way.
