Oh man, then Motorhead is not for you. 80% of their songs sound just like Ace of Spades.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 August 2015 20:04 (eight years ago) link

im not a motorhead fan but when i was a kid and first heard ace of spades on the radio it was hands down the most exciting thing i had ever heard.

you too could be called a 'Star' by the Compliance Unit (jim in glasgow), Monday, 24 August 2015 20:09 (eight years ago) link

ace of spades should be on every 80's list. also, make a circuit with me by the polecats.

true dat

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 24 August 2015 21:07 (eight years ago) link

ilx did get the best New Order song right at least

Number None, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:42 (eight years ago) link

P4k list definitely preferable to that ILX list, though maybe ILX 101-200 was more interesting.

List of people who are ready for woe and how we know this (seandalai), Monday, 24 August 2015 21:53 (eight years ago) link

but the rollout is only ever the top 100 if youre lucky on an ILX poll. Which is the least interesting part of polls imo

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:55 (eight years ago) link

the rap entries on the ILX list are embarassing. not that they're bad per se - a lot of them are fun - but they are not generally representative of the amazing shit coming out of hop hop in the 80s. NWA is represented by Express Yourself, which is above Rakim I mean come on

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:56 (eight years ago) link

I assume the majority of ballots were from Britishes tbh

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:57 (eight years ago) link

hophop was the best

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:57 (eight years ago) link

i doubt it. New Order is popular allover ILM plus a bunch of the UK posters jumped ship by then.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:58 (eight years ago) link

amazing shit coming out like hop hop

there ought to be one or more congressional hearings on the all-round lack of French pop but such is the world we live in I guess

List of people who are ready for woe and how we know this (seandalai), Monday, 24 August 2015 22:05 (eight years ago) link

im sure an 80s poll now would be different (ie have more new order songs)

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 22:06 (eight years ago) link

any specific tracks?

for sale: baby shoes, never worn your ass (katherine), Monday, 24 August 2015 22:06 (eight years ago) link

I've just been informed that Pitchfork have done a list of the best songs of the '80s. I love the music of that decade and will defend a lot of it like crazy when I come across folks (and I still do, incredibly) who (wrongly) think that the '80s is the decade that taste forgot. However, I haven't read this list and I probably won't because it's Pitchfork and I don't give a fuck.

xp specific french pop tracks, that is

wait so is this list actually important enough for p4k's pageviews that they hosted a "launch party" for it or was that just an internet troll being funny

pretty canonical thread: supreme 80's French pop/new wave videos

Pourquoi les français sont-ils si mauvais à la musique?

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 August 2015 23:03 (eight years ago) link

Before taking anyone's opinions on this thread seriously I need to know what 10 songs they'd add to the list and ten they'd remove

is Frankie Beverly & Maze "Back in Stride Again" on the list? I'm not clicking through the whole damn list but I'm assuming love will tear us apart is in there somewhere. throw that one off and put "back in stride again" on instead

remove:
david bowie's "let's dance"
michael jackson, "human nature"
janet jackson's "love will never do without you" (it was released as a single in the fall of '90 so come on)
new order, "ceremony"
tears for fears - whichever the fork doesn't mind reducing to an honorable mention
the cure, "pictures of you"
the clash, "the magnificent seven"
prince, "i would die 4 u"
the pixies, "where is my mind?"
de la soul, "eye know"

replace with:
george michael, "one more try"
go-go's "vacation"
the psychedelic furs "pretty in pink"
bauhaus, "kick in the eye"
def leppard, "photograph"
terence trent d'arby, "wishing well"
van halen, "jump"
don henley, "boys of summer"
mudhoney, "touch me i'm sick"
bobby brown "every little step"

da croupier, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 00:59 (eight years ago) link

and that's like, diplomatic suggestions to allow for more diverse in artists. i could also suggest one less new order spot to acknowledge hayzee fantayzee

otm

janet jackson's "love will never do without you" (it was released as a single in the fall of '90 so come on

this bugged the hell out of me. if this qualified where is escapade

lol Maze and Rene & Angela are part of that unfortunate breed of huge-on-R&B-radio artists who don't mean shit to anyone else unless you seek them out (A Street Named Desire one of my favorite '80s albums though).

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:04 (eight years ago) link

tbf the list is called songs and not singles.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:04 (eight years ago) link

Including a Don Henley song would require, I don't know, more liberal definitions of what's acceptable in the Pitchfork mind. Michael McDonald gets cool points because he appears on Holy Ghost! tracks.
