Interview done, Reuben was a very personable and thoughtful fellow!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 April 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

When/where is the interview being posted?

OC Weekly article in a couple of weeks, tying in with their tour with the Faint.

Please post here when it's ready. :-)

Should I go see them tonight?

Yes.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Man, they killed. Reminded me about what Chuck said (I paraphrase) about disco rocking harder than metal.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah they are ridiculously great live these days -- I caught them two years back opening for NIN in London and that pretty much made me a full on believer instead of a casual fan.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

They were great in Belfast a few months ago as well. Burnin' Up and Destroy Everything You Touch were godly.

Chris in Belfast, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

The only things that would have made it better are both in this clip (coincidentally recorded in Houston in '06 either at the same venue or down the street @ tha Meridian)

A. Shocking Blue cover
B. The vocals a little higher in the mix

I think they are really tight but man sometimes they are so OTT.

Wanted to see their show in Austin last week, but was the same night as MBV goddamnittohell.

when i was at uni in liverpool, (circa '03-05) they had a club night called "evol" in this little basement club. the guy members would dj and they had loads of cool guest djs like ivan smagghe and mark moore. had this great secret after-hours party atmosphere.

and they'd always be up for the odd convo about music or whatever, real chill fellas.

i think Destroy Everything You Touch holds up fabulously as one of the best electro songs of the last 5 years or so. they kind of invented that sound and it's been ripped off so many times it's exhausting now but they never got much credit for it. innit always the way though?

great track but idk it's not that far off the PSBs really

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

ladytron fanatics should seek out the moodysson movie 'mammoth' - i swear like half of the songs off of destroy everything u touch are featured

johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:01 (thirteen years ago) link

And the problem with being not that far off PSBs is?

Destroy is used brilliantly over the opening credits of The September Issue, like an implicit critique of Anna Wintour.

i don't know ladytron well enough to know if there's any unreleased tracks or b-sides on that comp, but that's prob the only way i'd shell out for it. anyway...... the hidden gem in their catalog (and on that comp) is "another breakfast with you" -- fucking incredible track.

"He Took Her To A Movie" came out in '99 and would have ruined their "Best Of 00-10" title

(yeah, I think it should be on there too, madness etc)

I'd have thrown in Oops (Oh My) and the Felix Da Housecat remix of Playgirl. I thought the whole point of deluxe editions was to round up remixes and B-sides like that.

ok, so not really, but if you're going to include three-quarters of Witching Hour, why leave that off?

I wanted to like Ladytron, and I went to see them at the Leeds festival. Unfortunately, I had taken an anonymous pill I bought for £5 from a stranger, and spent the entire set hiding behind a pillar, convinced that if the band caught sight of me they would command the audience to tear me limb from limb, and quite possibly shoot lasers from their eyes. I have not summoned up the courage to listen to them since.

that would DEFINITELY be deliberate skullduggery on the part of the band and not a fuck-up by someone in the production dept at the label

Unusatralian (sic), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 12:29 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe they didn't want royalties to go to alleged fascists? Of course it might've been easier not to cover them if that was the case.

the montage pisces posted has succeeded in making me crush on helen way more than i ever did in the previous 10 years i've been listening to ladytron

Well I guess Ladytron are only doing to Douglas P what he did to Oscar Brown jr, who didn't get credit when Doug pinched, via Jim Jones' People Temple Choir, the lyrics from his song "Brown Baby", recorded by Nina Simone...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBfO4-PVQwA

Brown Baby - Oscar brown jr

Brown baby
Brown baby
As you grow up
I want you to drink from the plenty cup
I want you to stand up
Tall and proud
I want you to speak up
Speak up clear and cloud

Brown baby
Brown baby
As years roll by
Walk with your head held high
I want you to live by
Live by the justice code
I want you to walk down
Walk down the freedom road

Brown baby
Brown baby
Now baby
Lie away
Lie away sleeping
Lie away here in my arms
While your mommy and daddy protect you
And keep you save from harm

Brown baby
Brown baby
It makes me so glad
That you will have things
I've never had
When out of men's hearts
All the hate is hurled
You're gonna live
You're gonna live in a better world

Saw them live the other day and they were excellent. Sound was really beefed up, might have been the venue maybe, but they were really powerful.
