That's exactly why I'll laugh my tits off, I honestly haven't seen anyone say anything positive about any of this yet!

Adblocked the yahoo suggests thing for linking to a Jake Bugg photo gallery.

Least favourite thing is probably the display of artwork by each artist, album and track in charts. So worthless, the jpg quality is v poor, several are broken and just slows things down in general.

Scores of useless and/or deleterious updates to the website and they still haven't combined the pages for Elvis Costello and Elvis Costello & The Attractions

― thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Monday, August 17, 2015 2:06 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Why would they? Those are two different things.

― Johnny Fever, Monday, August 17, 2015 2:11 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Like, fold The Ramones into Ramones, as is proper, but the Costello/Attractions split is justified.

― Johnny Fever, Monday, August 17, 2015 2:12 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I sort of think that some "& The" bands should be folded into the featured artist profiles for statistics purposes but I understand where you're coming from.

The homepage is full of this information that's being continuously refreshed and it looks like some kind of fake computer screen from a spy movie.

Hahahahaha, it totally does... especially with the world map and the real-time worldwide scrobble count. The world's music listening habits completely under surveillance.

"A live global counter showing the total number of tracks listened to by Last.fm users since 2003"

ugh wgaf

I'd almost rather they brought back those awful adapted ad slogans in the footer.

I'm seeing several others saying the same thing now... can't help but wonder what's going to happen when the "export data" and "delete account" functions become available.

HA!

This new Last.fm site will be used in Digital Marketing classes globally in the next 5 years...
QUESTION UPDATED 21 MINUTES AGO

7 ME TOO
4 FOLLOW

As an example of how not to build a UGC community platform that alienates your entire community. No-one listened to feeback from users and they just went and ploughed ahead with changes so that they can generate more advertising revenue.

Disabling the Delete Account function is sneaky as well because the one thing you don't want to get out into the digital media sphere is that thousands of users in your active user base deleted their accounts within hours of a change over because they hates it.

Thankfully, Twitter still exists to vent.

lol @ how angry people are about this

Basically all lastfm has done is move their bigdata gathering from the background to the foreground and everyone just realized they were statistics.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 22:13 (eight years ago) link

xpost:

You should see some of the comments on their Facebook page... christ! I'm struggling to remember a site redesign that's provoked such an across-the-board negative reaction as this. Having said that, last.fm have brought it on themselves, really. I can actually understand why people are annoyed, even if some of the reactions are a bit OTT.

Were Myspace this rapid in their self-immolation

PaulTMA, Monday, 17 August 2015 22:24 (eight years ago) link

MySpace were bought by News Corp in 2005 but it took them until 2008 before Facebook overtook them in the Alexa rankings. They haven't recovered since.

fucking awful =/

soyrev, Monday, 17 August 2015 22:40 (eight years ago) link

They haven't recovered since.

They never will. If there's one thing that's true about the internet, it's that a site which was popular and then found itself being painfully NOT popular will never EVER be popular again. You'll scrape by for a few years catering to your remaining userbase and you might, like Myspace, try to shift the focus to bring in a different group of users, but you're toast and you know it and everybody else knows it. Might as well kill the site and try again with something new.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 22:55 (eight years ago) link

Oh yeah, MySpace is completely fucked at this stage and has been for years, and I'm actually quite surprised it still exists. It's one of those sites that I keep assuming was taken offline years ago, and whenever I'm reminded that it's still around my reaction is always "MySpace is still going!?" - I don't know of a single person who still uses it, and everyone that I know that did switched to Facebook a long time ago.

As for last.fm, all it's going to take at this stage, given the negative reaction that the new layout has received, is for a bright spark to somehow come up with a better alternative and that'll be it, I reckon.

you're toast and you know it

Funnily enough, the moment I read this I started singing it as per the Michael Jackson song.. "you're toast, you're toast, you know it! dah!"

thing is, the website does seem faster

Couple years back, the Last.FM people were trumpeting LUMI - their way of "scrobbling" the web for you. You can guess what happened next...

Answer: absolutely nothing.

Surprised to see there has been an official export function apparently for some time. Was this available until they did the switch? Never noticed it unfortunately.

I was kind of wondering that myself. Seems to work from the desktop app but not the site.

I tried signing up for Libre.fm but that doesn't work either, never got an email to activate my account, and no way to request it be resent.

The internet sucks.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 18 August 2015 11:10 (eight years ago) link

Not sure whats going on with Soundclouds future, but that feels like something Myspace should be monitoring as a way back in? (not that they would do it right but still)

anvil, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 12:51 (eight years ago) link

As someone who dgaf about dj sets and mixes, Soundcloud will probably continue to be just fine for my needs. It's only people who are uploading copyrighted material that are getting scrutiny.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 12:55 (eight years ago) link

Is it just me or is there no "Forgot password" link anywhere to be found as I've done just that and now can't log in (and the desktop app has stopped too as it requires "re-authenticating")?

groovypanda, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 14:17 (eight years ago) link

tbh though I just want lastfm to do whatever's needed to survive. i kind of doubt this is that, but if it is i'll grin and bear it (kind of shocked it still exists at all)

soyrev, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 14:44 (eight years ago) link

All I used this site for was a plug in which showed me my top 20 albums from the previous week and the previous year. This doesn't work anymore but that could be a good thing? I stupidly often found myself listening to stuff with the express purpose of pushing it up my charts so I could see the thumbnail in my "top listens"

If this kills my interest in the site it might be a good thing. I have one iPod full of music that scrobbles, one that doesn't. Guess which one I listen to more.

I am using your worlds, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 15:06 (eight years ago) link

I suppose if this does kill last.fm maybe people will be more invested in making libre.fm an alternative, so it may end up being a good thing. I had a look at libre.fm but it's very basic, just scrobbles your songs with no extra features, and since the events are the thing I mostly use last.fm for, not having events at all is a deal-breaker.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 18 August 2015 15:09 (eight years ago) link

The approach should really be: "your stats, how would you like to view them?" rather than "here are some stats of yours, presented by us"

brimstead, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 16:27 (eight years ago) link

Some disgruntled users have started a petition - 1,385 "signatures" at the last count in just over 24 hours - I personally can't see that making any difference at all, myself.

They've now restored/re-implemented the "delete account" function. Should be interesting to see how many users delete their accounts now.

Would there be an interest in a OS X iTunes data-mining app that could aggregate listening statistics similar to how Last.FM should be doing it? Asking for a friend...

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 19:50 (eight years ago) link

The friend is me.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 19:50 (eight years ago) link

I'm kind of willing to wait a week or two before rage quitting, you know? It's a dumb site for statscocking and finding out about music, I can live without it if I have to but maybe they'll fix it.

I really really hate the Song Title - Artist change.

Also they've changed my profile picture to an old one.

Also web scrobbling seems to have stopped working.

emil.y, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 15:52 (eight years ago) link

I do actually like the graph you get of scrobbles per year/month/week. Could do with some colouring in tho.

Yeah. I was really surprised at how uniform mine was. Basically seem to scrobble 100 tracks each and every day.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 20:43 (eight years ago) link

Good god. last.fm's "similar artists" feature was pretty much the deepest and most useful/accurate of its kind on the net. But with the new redesign, only 10 similar artists are displayed. Bah!

brimstead, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 21:44 (eight years ago) link

^yeah, this is my biggest complaint. I haven't scrobbled in years, but up until recently I still used last.fm for recommendations.

I also noticed that shoutboxes now only include the 10 most recent shouts (whereas you used to be able to browse through hundreds of shouts dating back nearly a decade)

scarlett bohansson (unregistered), Sunday, 23 August 2015 21:26 (eight years ago) link

^the shoutbox thing may seem trivial, but there was a certain value in being able to see how casual music fans reacted to Sung Tongs upon its initial release (also I made some quality zings/shitposts in Neutral Milk Hotel's shoutbox over the years, and I was counting on being able to return to them in my old age)

scarlett bohansson (unregistered), Sunday, 23 August 2015 21:36 (eight years ago) link

i just want scrobbling to work again for me
