From the sounds of it, they've wildly over-complicated the whole site. Personally, I thought it was at its best when it was the original Audioscrobbler.

told you it was shite

Music purists everywhere are cringing at the idea of song title - artist. Myself included. Petty, yes, but kind of a huge deal to someone who sees music as their life and thus Last.FM as a big part of that venture.

i've tried to compose a snarky put-down for this gentleman but really

A couple of months back, we launched a BETA version of the new Last.fm to registered users and now we're ready for it to go live to everyone.

The new, re-imagined Last.fm includes a host of innovative features that will help users better navigate, explore and enjoy an infinite universe of music.

Some of the features included are:
The new User Homepage - which includes tracks, albums, artists and events (with even more to come) - surfaces all the music you are sure to love in one handy place. Whether it's a brand new release or a forgotten favourite, click play to listen instantly via the new Last.fm Playbar
Last.fm Live lets you visualise in real-time the listening habits and trends of Last.fm's global community. It does this by using a series of interactive widgets that surface trending music, artists, most loved tracks and more. Essentially, what Last.fm users are listening to and where.
A new Library Explorer, which enables you to delve deep into your listening history to rekindle those distant memories. What were you listening to on that hazy day back in Summer 2009? Last.fm can tell you exactly that.
The new Last.fm Playbar, gives you access to a huge catalogue of music by pulling in music from multiple streaming sources and staying with you across the site wherever your Last.fm journey takes you.
Last.fm has also added Metacritic scores to album pages. Metacritic aggregates music reviews from leading critics around the world; meaning you can now see what scores albums are given by tastemakers alongside our listening data from fans.
By surfacing Last.fm's listening data and music in new and more relevant ways, we're able to offer users the strongest, most personalised music recommendations around. Last.fm does this by connecting the most popular places to listen, watch and share music - from Spotify to YouTube, iTunes to Tidal - while organising your listening history and introducing you to music based on your tastes.
Love,
Last.fm

get fucked last.fm

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 17 August 2015 15:39 (eight years ago) link

I assume "we're now ready for it to go live to everyone" really means "the site isn't finished, but you're having it anyway so fuck off"

and Metacritic scores on album pages? Big fucking woo!

this is awful

Holy shit, they reversed it?

Goodbye forever, lastfm.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 15:45 (eight years ago) link

oops i self-mangled my cut & paste of their own mangled verbiage xp

feargal czukay (NickB), Monday, 17 August 2015 15:46 (eight years ago) link

xp I'm looking around now and I don't see any place that they've reversed artist & title (except when displayed as a stack, which I don't care about). The ticker at the bottom of the homepage still displays info in artist/title form.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 15:49 (eight years ago) link

Eh? I copy and pasted that directly from here yet it doesn't say that on the site. Weird!

Sorry, that was xpost to NickB.

But even so, I don't really see how any of this is in any way an enhancement on what was already there.

looks like they've removed 'friends' and replaced it with 'following' and 'followers'. 'neighbours' has totally vanished afaict?

feargal czukay (NickB), Monday, 17 August 2015 15:52 (eight years ago) link

limiting Recent Tracks and Top Tracks to 10 tracks is bad enough, but limiting Top Artists to just 5 is heinous

I have never given a shit about artist photos and never will

welltris (crüt), Monday, 17 August 2015 15:53 (eight years ago) link

i like artist photos, but i always hate it when they show a photo of the other band x

feargal czukay (NickB), Monday, 17 August 2015 15:54 (eight years ago) link

e.g. the photo of algiers is two pasty-looking yorkshiremen in their bathtowels

feargal czukay (NickB), Monday, 17 August 2015 15:56 (eight years ago) link

The homepage is full of this information that's being continuously refreshed and it looks like some kind of fake computer screen from a spy movie.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 15:56 (eight years ago) link

left my feedback on the site. hopefully there will be enough of a backlash that they make some changes. I'm cool with overhauling the site, but I'd really like the option to customize my lists the way I like them.

welltris (crüt), Monday, 17 August 2015 15:56 (eight years ago) link

album pic not being displayed beside the recent tracks as well as not being able to seewhovisits your page is the worst

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 17 August 2015 15:58 (eight years ago) link

not being able to seewhovisits your page

i didn't even know this was a feature

subscriber feature innit

won't let me listen to 40s punk, cancel my subscription toot sweet

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 17 August 2015 16:04 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, that was a subscriber feature. I can't believe I used to pay to use that site at one point, but it was cool for a minute in the mid 00s.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 16:06 (eight years ago) link

tbf I made some friends on there that I'm still friends with 10 years later, even though none of us use it anymore. So thanks for that, lastfm.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 16:07 (eight years ago) link

that said, it suggested I would like "I Miss Your Bones" by Hospitality, and I do like it, so thanks last.fm. I always have found their recommendation engine better than most.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 17 August 2015 16:08 (eight years ago) link

On the other hand, I asked it to play "bands like Hospitality" and it's now played "I Miss Your Bones" 4 times in a row, which is a bit much.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 17 August 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

WTF.

lol my profile picture has reverted to what it was a month ago.

Where the fuck are my events? This is quite impressive in its utter crapness.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 17 August 2015 16:22 (eight years ago) link

If anyone wants to set up a new scrobbling site and steal thousands of users from last.fm, now's the time!

Jesus. My events are all wrong now as well, they've reverted to some earlier version.

This is quite impressively botched, to the point where it's so bad I can't help but think the new company strategy is to lose some users, maybe there are too many putting strain on the servers at the moment so they've deliberately designed something so broken and awful that people won't want to use it? I just can't believe their developers had a meeting and said yeah this is good, well done good job everyone.

I actually can believe that. The native OSX client hasn't worked properly in forever at this point, it always crashes. Their forum has a ton of posts about it, but no one at last.fm has addressed it as far as I can see. I mean, having the ability to scrobble is their entire business model. Why wouldn't you fix that?

Getting rid of the neighbours/compatibility rating thing would be quite possibly one of the most stupid things last.fm could ever do, IMO.

Scores of useless and/or deleterious updates to the website and they still haven't combined the pages for Elvis Costello and Elvis Costello & The Attractions

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 August 2015 19:06 (eight years ago) link

Why would they? Those are two different things.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 19:11 (eight years ago) link

Like, fold The Ramones into Ramones, as is proper, but the Costello/Attractions split is justified.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 19:12 (eight years ago) link

Just looking at my profile. Apparently I listened to the album Days by Real Estate 41 times on June 11th and another 10 times on June 5th. I don't remember that happening.

Agree with everyone that it looks terrible and it seems really confusing.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 17 August 2015 19:17 (eight years ago) link

You can't get to Groups anymore. http://www.last.fm/group/ilXor still has the old layout, and they've disabled its charts (actually this happened a few weeks ago). Shame - I used to maintain a Spotify playlist of weekly top tracks: http://open.spotify.com/user/miketd/playlist/0tOUayXLSJS58cBIr5Fsa4

mike t-diva, Monday, 17 August 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link

I find it a bit amusing that there's a bunch of people wanting to delete their last.fm accounts but they can't because the feature is disabled!

i bet that is deliberate on last.fms part. its a shambles

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 17 August 2015 19:35 (eight years ago) link

Just found the part where we can leave feedback for the new version. I'm going for the I Don't Like It/Sad Face option.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 17 August 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

i told them i had unsubbed after being a subscriber for a decade

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 17 August 2015 19:42 (eight years ago) link

If they put out a statement that says or implies that the majority of feedback was positive, I'll laugh my tits off.

Don't they have to? It's part of the script - ruin something in the guise of making it new and better, ignore actual feedback, claim success.

a poetic ODE to FORNICATION (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 17 August 2015 20:12 (eight years ago) link

That's exactly why I'll laugh my tits off, I honestly haven't seen anyone say anything positive about any of this yet!

Adblocked the yahoo suggests thing for linking to a Jake Bugg photo gallery.

Least favourite thing is probably the display of artwork by each artist, album and track in charts. So worthless, the jpg quality is v poor, several are broken and just slows things down in general.

I sort of think that some "& The" bands should be folded into the featured artist profiles for statistics purposes but I understand where you're coming from.

Hahahahaha, it totally does... especially with the world map and the real-time worldwide scrobble count. The world's music listening habits completely under surveillance.
