HOW SURPRISING THAT ETHAN DOESN'T LIKE THIS SONG

Dan (Although This Time I Agree With Him, Heh) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i played this out the other day and it sounds a lot better on a big system, the bassline really comes into its own. it reminds me slightly of 'erotic discourse' of all things!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 07:50 (seventeen years ago) link

one month passes...
I'M BOSSY!

has this grown on anyone else as much as it has me? really badly want to hear the new album...

Jimmy_tango (Jimmy_tango), Friday, 28 July 2006 23:00 (seventeen years ago) link

whenever the woman puts on lipgloss i sing 'I'M GLOSSY'

she hates it

Mike Hooter (jaxon), Friday, 28 July 2006 23:14 (seventeen years ago) link

You should extend that to dental floss.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 28 July 2006 23:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i was really looking forward to hearing too $hort submit to kelis but he just wont ever! instead he bosses her around to tell other dudes shes bossy, like hes the kingpin responsible for her bossiness! whatever too short!

i hear this the opposite -- he's too smart to tangle with her, so the best he can do is be her hype man.

great song. sexy video.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 28 July 2006 23:31 (seventeen years ago) link

i have been listening to this nigh on constantly since i stole it last night. i like how minimal and unhurried it is, it makes it seem opulent and lazy which fits lyrically. i love how much fun a track can be just with some 808 beats and a bit of good synth work. i haven't liked a pop song this much in a very long time...

Andrew Harrison (andrewtothemax), Thursday, 3 August 2006 03:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW!

AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

"Bossy" = WORST. SONG. EVAR.

Just needed to be said.

It's Rodney, assume the position! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:22 (seventeen years ago) link

WRONG

Has anyone heard this? It sucks she's not working with the Neptunes anymore...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 3 August 2006 06:52 (seventeen years ago) link

this cover sucks.

Grand (grand), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:50 (seventeen years ago) link

A lot of it is produced by WILL.I.AM :( :( :(

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:54 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't think 'bossy' is that bad, and it's definitely a grower, but i worry for the album if this is considered lead single material.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Like U is nice, lots of big opera samples...

And I think Bossy has a lot in common with Milkshake, with that stupid ringtone friendly repetitious melody. To be honest I'm glad the Neptune's aren't producing the album, maybe its because the Wanderland album bombed considering how big the singles where.. what I've heard sounds better for the lack of there trademark beat shuffle which was *Everywhere* when Wanderland came out..

jk_ (jk@gabba), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:07 (seventeen years ago) link

That's an awful cover.

Not heard "Bossy" at all, but still enjoy "Milkshake" and "Trick Me" on occaision.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:13 (seventeen years ago) link

i like the cover! it's better than the tasty one.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, I think I dislike the name more than the cover necessarily. And yes, Tasty was another terrible cover.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:16 (seventeen years ago) link

it wasn't terrible, just boring and identikit. she was still pretty on it. i really like the kelis was here title, though if the album is disappointing the past tense will be unfortunate.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:20 (seventeen years ago) link

everyone seems to be into this 30s chic.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:27 (seventeen years ago) link

The promo shots for the album have her in a bunch of sub-Agent Provocateur poses. HOT.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:40 (seventeen years ago) link

A lot of it is produced by WILL.I.AM :( :( :(
-- Konal Doddz (stevem7...), August 3rd, 2006.

He's actually done some pretty good production work lately.

I still like bossy. Thats Shondrae, right?

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Rodney is almost OTM; it's not the worst song ever but WOW do I never, ever, ever want to hear it again.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure you can already hear "Bossy" by pressing the red button on any Casio keyboard...

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

the braxe/falke bossy remix (well, one of them) of bossy is TOTALLY BOSS. kicks the original's ass.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:56 (seventeen years ago) link

HEL-lo...

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

braxe/falke rmx!!!!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

s1ocki very otm. the only thing i'm really crazy about the original is the sopranos quote. and as long as superfine kelis is on her album covers ain't none of them going to be 'awful'.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, but that cover does work awful hard to separate the words "Kelis" and "superfine" from one another.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Rodney is almost OTM; it's not the worst song ever but WOW do I never, ever, ever want to hear it again.

Rhetoric, dude.

It's Rodney, assume the position! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I like the SebastiAn remix much better than the Braxe/Falke remix. And so should you.

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

switch remix, people! k-wtf factor, esp the end!

etc (esskay), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Just for the record, it's not an 808. I'm sick of people calling any minimal electro kit an 808!

Also, this song is awful. Kelis has so little charisma, it makes me uncomfortable just to listen to it.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 August 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

She says 808 in the song. And she has plenty of charisma (see: almost anything else she's done), which doesn't change the fact that the song is an atrocity.

It's Rodney, assume the position! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 3 August 2006 22:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Is there really any argument about Kelis having charisma?

And (way x-post)she has already produced a slice of genius and it was called Milkshake. I'm amazed that The Lex didn't/hasn't realised this.

And as Rodney says, this doesn't stop the new single being meh at best

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Thursday, 3 August 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

there's actually TWO different braxe/falke mixes on that 12" (along with the sebastian and switch ones). all pretty good!

HPSTRKRFT (haitch), Thursday, 3 August 2006 23:34 (seventeen years ago) link

"Bossy" = WORST. SONG. EVAR.

not while Milkshake exists. what happened to kelis?

I can't wait for Weird Al's "I'm Gassy".

"Kelis is back :) Both 'Kaleidoscope' and 'Wanderland' are patchy, but she's an amazing pop star and one day she will make a masterpiece.
-- The Lex (alex_macpherso...) (webmail), September 1st, 2003 2:25 PM. (The Lex) (link)"

This post seemed to imply that you didn't think Milkshake was her masterpiece, bearing in mind that Milkshake was already released at this stage.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

He was referring to albums obviously. In terms of song-masterpieces, there's half a dozen songs on Kaleidoscope alone that are miles beyond "Milkshake", and at least several on Wanderland to boot.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i completely disown that statement, neither kaleidoscope nor wanderland are remotely patchy, I have no idea where my ears were at back then at all.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 5 August 2006 07:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Kaleidoscope is patchy.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 5 August 2006 09:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Compared to what modern R&B album? I at least like all of the tracks on there, and "Good Stuff", "Caught Out There", "Get Along With You", "Mafia", "Suspended", "No Turning Back" and "Roller Rink" are all excellent. 7 excellent tracks on an R&B album is about as much as one can hope for.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 5 August 2006 10:56 (seventeen years ago) link

"No Turning Back" was always my jam, but if it had come out even 12 months later it would probably have seemed like another generic Neptunes production - listening to this again makes me feel intensely nostalgic for when I only knew The Neptunes for this album, "Got Your Money" and "Superthug". I actually remember the day I bought Kaleidoscope, I was so excited.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 5 August 2006 11:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the highpoints just make the surrounding material sound half-assed? That might be more like it.

Anyway, I dunno, I just found it an incredibly uneven listen... I actually sold it and I LOVE Kelis really! But this probably says more about my fussiness in general than the actual record in the end.

I do want to smack Pharrell quite early on in Kaleidoscope though - TOO. MANY. SHOUTOUTS. X(

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 5 August 2006 11:16 (seventeen years ago) link

It's true, Pharell was modelling himself on Jermaine Dupri on this album I think.

I'm forgiving of the weaker tracks: even half-arsed material like "Ghetto Children" is kinda goofy and silly and fun. And the run from "Good Stuff" to "Mafia" is the strongest four song succession on an R&B album that I can think of offhand.

Just listened to "Caught Out There" again, I'd forgotten the spoken-word intro. "....WHO'VE BEEN LIED TO BY THEIR MEN! AND I KNOW Y'ALL BEEN LIED TO! OVER & OVER AGAIN!"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 5 August 2006 11:21 (seventeen years ago) link

And the "Dear Diary" bit in "Get Along With You"!

The Neptunes were never this pretty again, sadly.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 5 August 2006 11:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I probably sold this hastily to be fair. I could possibly be more forgiving now...

Still think the beat is MASSIVELY too high & hard in the mix on "Get Along With You" (another reason for smacking! and I don't like that fake i.d. mix either..) which REALLY pisses me because that track seriously 'got' me unexpected one night when I was in a post break-up state of mind.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 5 August 2006 11:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Hope this new album is good...
