What they said. (Sorry, only just noticed the thread revival.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 October 2006 22:28 (seventeen years ago) link

so today i got given a promo of depeche mode: the best of. the packaging is so spectacularly shit that i thought, for a moment, it was some kind of bootleg joke.

but apparently no: it's "their first-ever best-of collection" (hmm: still all singles, though, which makes it, what, their fourth singles collection?) and has a NEW TRACK, called "martyr", that i'm about to listen to in the next couple of seconds.

tracklisting etc is in the link above. i know it's not a reissue as such but this seemed the best thread for it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:53 (seventeen years ago) link

anyone got any news on the villalobos sinner in me remix release?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm just buying the single, obv.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

check this album out, though, ned: the packaging/inner sleeve is so craptacularly awful it's not even funny.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:59 (seventeen years ago) link

"martyr" is oddly jaunty, seems to have a bassline borrowed off soft cell, and can't make up its mind whether to glitch, grind or bleep. it's no "precious", put it that way.

mrs fiendish has just hoyed in and said: "it sounds like every other depeche mode song ever" but she's completely and utterly wrong there.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 November 2006 00:04 (seventeen years ago) link

hmm i'm intrigued. i *LOVE* jaunty dm. i mean, post-vince era.

is it like 'but not tonight'? or not quite that jaunty?

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:41 (seventeen years ago) link

it isn't fit to lick the rain off "but not tonight's" shoes. sadly.

--

In sum part of me is still disappointed in this reissue series compared to the Cure one -- relatively few actual new or rare tracks featured for a start. Still, the mega-documentary that the DVDs have created is enjoyable, and it's nice to have these in a final definitive CD version before that format starts to slip away. I am kinda glad, though, that I've never had to pay for any of the reissues so far, relying instead on Amoeba credit for used copies...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 07:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't purchased these yet (even though I sold back my old cd copies in preparation for doing that) simply because they haven't been enticing enough. I'm a bit of an uneducated sound quality junkie and I felt like I couldn't hear some of the old versions (particularly the 80s ones up to Violator) the way I though I should be hearing them. I do still need to get these.

On to the other piece you slippedd in there about, "it's nice to have these in a final definitive CD version before that format starts to slip away," I think you just started a whole new thread there. There probably already is a thread or one million pieces of a thread spread across other threads, but do you think the record industry is heading towards abandoning the cd format? All downloads? No physical form for releases (cause you know majors aren't going to revert to vinyl)? And why did I read that the music industry actually had total higher sales last year that 2005 but since a much higher percent was from paid downloads, "they" still weren't happy because downloads aren't as profitable as physical album sales (or somesuch)? How could that be possible? Where are we headed Ned?

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 19 January 2007 13:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I accidentally started such a thread the other day!

The Data Migration Thread

So that might be where to turn for further discussion. Where we're headed? Honestly, no idea -- the way I see it, reissues like these are kinda the deluxe 'here's as good as it gets' variant on CDs as such. Depeche wisely are hedging their bets via the complete back catalog on iTunes, just to get that out of the way. And while I was snarking on this in its separate thread, there is actually a chunk of stuff on there which is as yet ungathered in physical form which I do want, so I'll post that here:

Now personally I'll wait on singles sets 7 and 8 in actual form -- no matter what I do with my CD collection over the years, some stuff I'll keep the way it is and Depeche will be one of those acts. But the rest of this I'll snag as I can if, as I presume, they're not going to release it in any other format any time soon.

Precious (Sasha's Gargantuan Vocal Mix) (Full Length) (9.46)

This = awesome, btw.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, that I have on the actual "Dream On" single, IIRC. (I love the singles box sets because they don't fuck around with that CD 1/CD 2/vinyl splitting of tracks; they just put everything on there properly!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry, not "Dream On," duh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I have loved the documentaries. I don't think there are a lot of new tracks to provide (other than rare live tracks, which is pointless because the songs are already known - unless there is unreleased studio material, then let it be.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link

However, they should have included the bonus tracks on the CDs too, not just the DVDs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I tried writing about the iTunes boxset in the sandbox, and everyone poo-poo'ed it! I'm a little hurt!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I was cruel.

Actually there is some word about that -- apparently you're only supposed to be able to buy the whole set and not individual songs or sets, which is annoying. (Even more annoying is that this is Mute's policy, not Apple's.) This is however apparently still being talked about behind the scenes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

You can buy most of the tracks individually, but not the sets. Regardless, I am currently saving up for this thing. I want it now. Tomorrow won't do...

So I got the Construction Time Again and Black Celebration reissues on Saturday. Who is happy? I AM. Then again I am currently listening to "It Doesn't Matter" from Some Great Reward -- how had I missed those concluding vocal parts before?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 2 April 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

It seems they haven't been able to import them here yet. They were supposed to have been released by the middle of last week, but no signs of them anywhere in Norwegian shops for now.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 2 April 2007 21:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i just got the 'construction time again' vinyl reissue. delighted to have a new. fresh, scratch free copy.

stirmonster, Monday, 2 April 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, ordered it from an online shop now and hopefully they will send it to me before a Norwegian store manages to get it in its shelves. I need those two remasters/DVD's now. Heck, it's the two best albums they ever released, Goddammit!!!

six months pass...

Ultra and Exciter finally out and got 'em the other day. And with that final step, I was able to do something which I had hoped would be the case -- get all the reissues for free thanks to dumping promo discs at Amoeba. A more than fair exchange.

STILL WORKING MY WAY THROUGH THE DIGITAL BOX SET!!!

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Nothing wrong with that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, doubtless. It's just a LOT of music to chew through.

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I have yet to invest in "Exciter". Completely pointless as a remaster (after all, what exactly is there to be done with a 2002 recording?), but I guess I will buy it for the documentary and the new surround mixes.

these dvds that come with the reissues are just fantastic aren't they? the early days studio stuff is adorable! i like how they give Daniel Miller and the other key label/production/tour crew bigwigs their due as opposed to the usual round of celebs banging on about what the record means to them and suchlike. some day all reissues would be made this way. a minor gripe is the lack of demos and stuff like you get with The Cure but you can't have everything.

Even I didn't. At least, not yet.

tbh it was worth it just to get "Happiest Girl (The Pulsating Orbital Vocal Mix)" on CD (the version on "World In My Eyes" was an instrumental)

DJP, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

it's all on Spotify by the way.

piscesx, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:51 (twelve years ago) link

that would be helpful to me if Spotify was available in the US

also trying to figure out why I never heard the Trentemoller Club Remix of "Wrong" before picking this up

DJP, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 20:17 (twelve years ago) link

Huh. I got it but apparently I haven't listened to it yet. In the queue!

slowly but surely i am getting the basic single cd remastered editions.
today i found remastered edition of 'violater' for a coin in a charity shop.
not so sure i need 'ultra' to be replaced as i think the original sounds perfectly fine, but should the chance arise then of course i will succumb.
the only other remastered edition i really need of the cds i already have is 'black celebration', however, the edition i have has extra tracks on it (breathing in fumes, but not tonight(ext), black day).
such a shame they did not add extras to the remasters.
that said, i kind of like the fact they stuck to the original albums.
i mean my first exposure to MFTM was on cassette, which had a ton of extras, and what i would give to have that edition available on remastered cd now.

black celebration dvd is a thing of beauty and a joy forever; the docu is *an hour* long and features among other treats; The Cure and the the Mode hiding in a van during a riot.

ultra came out during a period when CDs sounded pretty good, i think. pre-loudness wars, post-"oops got rid of the hi hat". like those great sounding byrds reissues that came around 97/98, i kind of remember those being the first 60s rock reissues that sounded really great and were inexpensive + easy to get. maybe i'm wrong/too young, tho

The original CD issue of Music for the Masses had bonus tracks too, if I recall ('Agent Orange', 'To Have and To Hold (Spanish Taster)', 'Never Let Me Down (Aggro Mix)', a remix of 'Pleasure, Little Treasure' etc.) - I think it was a bit of a ploy by Mute to get people to buy the CD version... same with Erasure's The Innocents which had a couple of bonus tracks on both the cassette and CD versions ('When I Needed You (Melancholy Mix)' and their version of 'River Deep, Mountain High') ...

yeah otm. I mean, I figure it's partially based on what age I was at the time (imagine it sounds dated to a lot of people younger than me), but I love a lot of the way late 90's stuff was produced, before all the squashing. really crisp and clear. Ultra is one of the best-produced albums ever imo

I've been watching the various documentaries that came out with the 2006 reissues and occasionally Fletch comes across as the most colossal POS, I don't know much about the inner dynamics of the band, does he have that reputation?

Maresn3st, Tuesday, 11 January 2022 17:23 (two years ago) link

I remember hearing that what eventually drove Alan Wilder out of the band was his indignation that Fletch took the same share of the band's profits, while making no musical contribution whatsoever
