oh THAT Daniel Miller ;)

that would be ridiculous tho - you're boss of world's biggest indie label (prior to Jive), then you decide to start producing again and release on Kompakt?!

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

It's pretty certain that whoever it is, is with DEF Management in London. If it's not Moby or someone from Röyksopp that leaves, as far as I'm aware, Sonique. I stil think it's Moby though.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

so you don't believe they're from London?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm guessing it's a big beat-related name. An ex-Surreal Madrid guy or something like that.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Admittedly I doubt Miller would use artwork like that.

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

that's exactly the kind of thing i'd expect mr. miller to do.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

and to be fair, i don't think he's ever stopped producing. i think he just doesn't release much of his own work anymore

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:28 (nineteen years ago) link

And, as I said above, he and Fehlmann did one of the Kreisel 99s.

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

It's Craig Richards I hear

Barnaby (Barnaby), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:19 (nineteen years ago) link

this would be richard's first foray into producing afaik. there is the fabric connection...

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I remember the good old days when no one knew who was behind all those producer/remixer pseudonyms - and few even cared.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:35 (nineteen years ago) link

you can't be serious.

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:39 (nineteen years ago) link

this would be richard's first foray into producing afaik.

well there's that scumdolly track that was floating about for a while that i'm *pretty sure* was him.

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:39 (nineteen years ago) link

nah, no way is it craig richards. too cheesy.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Why can't I be serious? Call me an idealist, but sometimes I miss the days when electronic music had nothing to do with the rockist star cult, when all (well, almost all) that mattered was the music. I still don't know what most of my favourite artists look like. Or who they really are, for that matter.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:45 (nineteen years ago) link

i just don't know if there ever was a time when electronic music had nothing to do with the "rockist star cult".

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:52 (nineteen years ago) link

in some respects you could say that all of the subversive "anonymous" trappings of electronic music only serve to legitimize what they subvert

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:55 (nineteen years ago) link

i always wanted to know who the people were behind the tunes, as someone who aspired to be in their position someday

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:55 (nineteen years ago) link

i have it on good word that it's Peter Noone

King Korn Karn, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Prototype was published by Mute Songs Ltd. so it has to be either Miller or Moby.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:16 (nineteen years ago) link

ILM in massive group Cluedo thriller.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:22 (nineteen years ago) link

i just don't know if there ever was a time when electronic music had nothing to do with the "rockist star cult".

Well, perhaps not "nothing to do", but there certainly was a time when it had *less* to do. Personally, I still don't much care who's behind the tunes.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:23 (nineteen years ago) link

and given that both Boomkat and Kompakt mention that the artist is English, i think we have our answer

but who knows, maybe it's Vince Clarke or Nick Cave

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:23 (nineteen years ago) link

or diamanda galas?

stirmonster, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:49 (nineteen years ago) link

James Holden? Alison Goldfrapp? Luke Slater? Frank Tovey?

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

the diamanda galas one made me laugh out loud at my desk here.

nice one

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Brian Higgins? Boy George?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

paul mccartney, again.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

And now that we've deduced that Rex the Dog is most likely Daniel Miller... does anyone know the real-life identity of Jimmi Moon?

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Frank Tovey is not english. Anymore.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:54 (nineteen years ago) link

moby is even more unlikely than Dave Clarke.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Phil Sherburne will know! Phil, where you at?! holla back!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah I don't think it would be Moby, not because he's not good enough but because his production style when he is good is v. different.

I don't think it's Trevor Jackson or Ewan Pearson - they've both done remixes for Depeche Mode on the same single as the Rex the Dog remix. OTOH points in favour or it being Ewan Pearson: in an interview I read with him he said he was doing another album for Soma because he was contractually obliged to (ie. he wouldn't do it for them otherwise), so this could be his way of circumventing his Soma deal.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 02:04 (nineteen years ago) link

so, it all turns out to be rather boring - i got this from a friend.

Rex the Dog is Jake Williams from London taaan. I have his email if anyone does need to get in touch with him.. and I love pretty much everything I've heard him do *gushes* - Den

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

How reliable is said friend? Who is Jake Williams?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:15 (nineteen years ago) link

very reliable and no idea!

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:17 (nineteen years ago) link

a "who is jake williams? (ideas now)" thread is required

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

jake williams is a singer/songwriter originally from nicktown
jake williams is the producer who's behind acts like jx and mekka
jake williams is a traitor with his daughter
jake williams is up next with the vivacious brunette

Michael F Googlism (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it possible that Rex the Dog is not Moby, but that Jake Williams is?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:23 (nineteen years ago) link

BTW, that new 12" is the new Rocker. Possibly.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:26 (nineteen years ago) link

You all know Jake Williams!

Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:28 (nineteen years ago) link

You Belong to Me
Close To Your Heart
Son Of A Gun
There's Nothing I Won't Do

so many great JX tracks, but not a one sounds anything like Rex The Dog.
guess everyone can change paths somewhere along the way

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Rex the Dog did a JX remix.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:39 (nineteen years ago) link

the new single is fucking amazing. Job otm, except it's better than Rocker, which I still only think is "good".

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:46 (nineteen years ago) link

i just don't get the rex the dog stuff at all. to me it sounds like bad old hooj toons / felix stuff which off course in light of it being jx now makes perfect sense.

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:50 (nineteen years ago) link

and thus the backlash began...

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Rex The Dog? Rex the HOGWASH more like.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

the backlash began for me when kompakt signed him.

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Am I willing to admit defeat yet? Not quite. Was I wrong? Probably.

(Don't mind me. I'm working on my Robert Evans [for Halloween].)

So, how good is that Triola record?

Very good.
