they nominated that Paul McCartney/Super Furry Animals unlistenable collabo for "Best Alternative" awhile back!

So, two (arguably two-and-a-half) albums in the AotY category, and all four of the top nomination-getters (6 each for Beyonce, OutKast, Jay-Z, and Pharrell; not to mention 5 for Missy, Eminem, and 50 Cent) are hip-hop.

... does this mean it's dead?

Warren and Johnny Cash seem to have cancelled each other out for the usual post-mortem accolades.

Cash not only got nominated but actually won a Grammy last year for American IV (despite it actually coming out after the deadline).

I'm kinda surprised by the Outkast nominations, because (I believe) both Speakerboxxx/TLB and Stankonia came out in September (of 2003 and 2000 respectively), but Stankonia didn't get the Grammy nomination until a year and change later, and this one's getting it just a few months later. although I guess it figures since that album brought them the crossover audience that was already expecting the new one. but still, it's weird.

I was suprised when I heard the "Record of the Year" nominations -- four of the five choices are songs that I would generally leave on the car radio whenever they turned up. Swap out "Where Is The Love," with "In Da Club," as an earlier poster suggested, or "Ignition Remix" or, heck, "Rock Your Body," and the category would be perfect.

As for Fountains of Wayne, it looks like the Academy is fitting them in under that malleable "first recording which establishes the public identity of the artist" language.
