I really wish I'd bought this when that bonus Loveland CD was on it. Now I really want it but I'm holding out to find the bonus 2CD used.

I actually still haven't played it.. Am I missing out?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:39 (twenty years ago) link

you are. and I agree re: the album "Step" being better than the remix.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago) link

Last night I did the washing-up and sang along to "Bad Man" on my iPod.

this post:

haha do alert us when you've removed the cloth from yr ears, won't you?

proves that Matos IS actually Marcello, thus confirming many of my suspicions.

:)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:49 (twenty years ago) link

haha not fucking hardly, sir.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:04 (twenty years ago) link

Matos,

If MJ's on the outs with fans because his "career for the past 15 years (did someone say 20? 2004 is the anniversary of the Victory Tour, after all) has been one public-relations-puzzle-cum-disaster after another"

then how do you arrive at this conclusion--

"If Jackson wants to save his career, he'll have to start making good records again. Period."

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:33 (twenty years ago) link

Plus Invincible > Bad

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago) link

good records trump bad PR, at least in Kelly's case. and Invincible sucks, dude.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:38 (twenty years ago) link

(so did Bad, so it's not like your equation is wrong)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:38 (twenty years ago) link

also, I was responding directly to the piece Goldstein wrote, which said unilaterally that MJ was up shit creek because he (allegedly) diddled little boys and RK wasn't because he (allegedly) diddled little girls. he managed to ignore a LOT of facts, two of the most important being MJ's continual PR nightmare and RK's creative upswing.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:40 (twenty years ago) link

in other words, I don't think he's on the outs with his fans solely because of the PR stuff--that's a pretty major factor, and it's one Goldstein bafflingly ignored, but I do think people's increasing disinterest in his music played a much larger part.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago) link

I'm not agreeing with Goldstein, or disagreeing with what you say about Jackson's PR history, but the "Period" strongly implies that the *only* thing Michael Jackson would have to do to save his career is make a good record.

"good records trump bad PR, at least in Kelly's case"
debatable, but since Kelly isn't Jackson, doesn't prove your conclusion

"Invincible sucks, dude."
See, what hope does MJ have of getting the masses to hear good music when even some of our best critics turn a deaf ear to it?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago) link

this is gonna turn into howard the duck vs. man-thing any minute, i just know it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago) link

you're right, should've left off the "Period." and Keith, I've heard Invincible--several times, I worked at a record store when it came out, remember?--and it's really, really spotty. ("Butterflies" I'll grant you, certainly, but most of the uptempo stuff sounds like warmed-over versions of the Teddy Riley stuff on Dangerous. and I'm saying this as someone who likes about half--the first half, natch--of HIStory. and most of Dangerous, for that matter.) but I don't recall liking much of ANYTHING off Bad, so again, you're right.

in short, strongo otm.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago) link

also haha the public really goes along with critics, don't they Mr. Fiery Furnaces in My Top Ten = 5 million sold.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:59 (twenty years ago) link

I swear, Fiery Furnaces were just about to go platinum, and then Xgau sloughed em off as just an honorable mention--now everyone's throwing their money at Ramiro Musotto.

"you're right, should've left off the "Period."

Yay! I'm gonna go take a victory lap around the office!

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:04 (twenty years ago) link

A big diff between R Kelly and MJ is that people are only vaguely aware of R Kelly as a public persona whereas more people probably know MJ for being that weird guy on tv than for writing "Billie Jean" these days. I think there's more in common between MJ and Madonna in terms of how people interface the image and the music than there is between MJ and R Kelly. Interestingly both Madonna's and MJ are still having club hits ("One More Chance" has big 12" sales it seems) despite their inability to chart well at the moment. Perhaps the dancefloor decontextualises their music a bit more (in Madonna's case maybe remixes improve the music too). I think with R Kelly, despite his practice of inserting his persona into his songs through blatant self-referencing, there's less persona-stuff to process before enjoying or not enjoying the music for what it is. His records aren't as much "talking-point" records.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

Hmmm - I'm not really following you there. I think RK has pretty much turned into played up the persona thing this year, because of his legal troubles sure, but also through all the meta stuff you're mentionning. Chocolate Factory is a great album, period, but becomes even better when taking into account the whole context, ie. what Matos is saying: RK is completely shutting down the opposition by releasing one career-topping single after an another. The awkward tone of most recent reviews (i.e. 'we shouldn't be enjoying this so much') is the clearest sign of how he's winning the battle.
I can't help but to wonder what would have happened to MJ if he'd used the tracks he was offered and that ended up on Justified. Is he already too far gone or could he have pulled it away?

Oh man, it's still great. I even have the fucking thing as my ringtone.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:32 (twenty years ago) link

my wife has taken the mystery out of the Googler tendency to address the artist under discussion: she says it's that the Googler believes he/she is signing a guestbook. While this explanation makes perfect sense, it has depressed me, because I was heretofore delightfully mystified by the way Googlers consistently speak directly to the artist.

Did everybody else already have this one figured out?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:51 (twenty years ago) link

No J0hn, you see, they are all talking to you.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:59 (twenty years ago) link

Very funny Curt1s. My own confusion lay in the idea that there were people who thought "if I write it in a public place, the artist will see it!" and just ran with the idea.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 18 March 2004 03:02 (twenty years ago) link

i'm not sure if that's actually the case--it's still a bit of a weird leap to make

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 18 March 2004 03:26 (twenty years ago) link

my dad seems to like this song. he leaves it on until the end when he's flipping channels.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 18 March 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago) link

i can hear it coming from the living room right now. i'd like to go watch but i'm afraid he might be doing some sort of weird dance to it.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 18 March 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago) link

to be fair, 'stepping' is a pretty weird dance.

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:20 (twenty years ago) link

this song is kind of sad, though. I think between this and ignition you can really sum up what's compelling about r. kelly at the moment- even though it's not r. himself who is celebrating anything, he's gonna step anyway.

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:26 (twenty years ago) link

So word on the street is R Kelly was found not guilty re: child porn.

I hope this doesn't mean his creative streak is over.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:28 (twenty years ago) link

plus, while the original is not bad and certainly does no damage to chocolate factory (the bass is a little slappy though) the remix comes in and just sucks you in with that understated sway. oh and the finger snapping! and r.'s split-second marvin impression.

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:28 (twenty years ago) link

x-post, speaking of creative streaks and trouble going hand in hand

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:29 (twenty years ago) link

and by "word on the street" I mean the little news window that pops up when I log onto instant messanger.
