"head over feels" is a great description. It is now officially entered into my vocabulary.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 16:04 (eight years ago) link
Katy and Demi released their first hit albums the same summer and have been mining the same basic post-Kelly Clarkson aesthetic ever since. only time Demi really went too far outside her comfort zone was the clubby Timbaland stuff on the 3rd album imo.

I tend to choose head over feels too iirc.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 16:20 (eight years ago) link
"shine" isn't explicitly or even implicitly gay enough to qualify i think xp, this is like saying sam smith has been releasing singles about gay flings just b/c you can catch like half a second of an arm that looks male in the music video for "stay with me"
― dyl, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 17:26 (eight years ago) link
Also I specifically mean a straight male pop star doing a song that's like "don't tell your mother but let's have bro-jobs all summer".
― Tim F, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 20:14 (eight years ago) link
so hot
― surm, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 20:21 (eight years ago) link
Tim's last few posts so otm obv. Whether the male pop star who goes there is actually gay and out is not the point?
What I love about the "bicurious" perspective of this song is that it's not, at least not for the narrator. Demi doesn't self define as bi afaik but there's no uncertainty about what the narrator wants; she comes across as someone who's probably seduced straight girls before even though she may not be out?
Like, it's not sexuality performed for anyone's gaze as Katherine pointed out. It's not straight girls dabbling in something they're not. It's not flirtation across a sexuality divide. It's something in between, it's very fluid.
I mean these are only thoughts I had after I listened to it 17 times in a rowbin a coach crossing slovenia yday, musically it's so obv the pop single of the year. Tyyyyyyype, monotony otm

i wouldn't be surprised if nick jonas takes up that task lol (xp to tim)
― dyl, Thursday, 6 August 2015 06:40 (eight years ago) link
Ha I was thinking of him too. He really should given how much he's gone after the gay audience
― lex pretend, Thursday, 6 August 2015 07:31 (eight years ago) link
i hope Nick is working on Demi's new album. he wrote so many of the best songs on her first album, and was the musical director on her last tour.

i can't tell why but the video for Cool for the Summer really rubs me the wrong way

The video is an embarrassment of embarrassments. Song deserves better.

Could have been just her and someone driving around the city at night, or sitting in a hotel lobby, both would have been better.
given the subject matter it could have been a lot worse

The fading "too"s and "you"s at the end of lines in the verses sounded like a familiar device, but I couldn't quite put a finger on it. Then I realized it's a total Gregg Alexander/Danielle Brisebois/New Radicals thing. Automatically makes me like it 25% more.

np, just surprise someone could know the phrase "broadway baby" and not immediately follow it up in one's mind with "...walking off my tired feet"

Cool For The Summer and Confident are great singles but this album is a real slog.
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 17:29 (eight years ago) link
yeah both this and the selena gomez album were big disappointments. brilliant lead singles, was ready for them to step up and make some really interesting pop albums...instead we get generic, bland titles and incoherent singles-plus-filler

oh dearie me
in any event, i enjoyed confident even though it's kinda sorta really uneven & idk what she or even her label was thinking having iggy azalea slither onto a song, though the presence of nu-dubstep production would seem to indicate the answer is being notably behind the times on a general cultural level.
the singles are tremendous, liked "stone cold," "yes" and "wildfire" beyond that, rest of it i can take or leave (minus the iggy feature, which is execrable)
― slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link
i read the pieces mocking the iggy feature before i heard it and sort of rolled my eyes at everyone kicking an easy target yet again but then i heard it and my jaw dropped at how terrible it was
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 19:17 (eight years ago) link
I really like "Cool for the Summer" except for the "die for each other" line which seems completely out of place.
― Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link
xp lol yea, i wouldve given it the benefit of the doubt if it'd been passable (like, i can tolerate her on "problem" bc its not bad enough to undo the song) but...it is not.
i did laugh at her referring to nick young as a king, thats prob the nicest thing anyone's said about him
― slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link
Spencer, having a gay relationship under multople jurisdictions right now is essentially being willing to die for each other. The melodrama is right for the song
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 00:32 (eight years ago) link
Interesting, but in that case, the song title is out of place - who would die for a summer fling?
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 03:49 (eight years ago) link
I like the "die for each other" line because I like think of it as a figure of speech ...even though I know it probably isn't used that way.
― daavid, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 04:10 (eight years ago) link
an overly exaggerated figure of speech, I mean, like bff.
― daavid, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 04:11 (eight years ago) link
"die for each other" is one of the best lines in the song because it brings this manic Spring Breakers aspect of partying in the summer into focus, it gives it an earnest YOLOness, making the memories of our lives having feelings amidst the decadence etc
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 28 October 2015 05:32 (eight years ago) link
no the point is that you can be killed for a summer fling. it's about conveying the inherent and not even slightly exaggerated risk.
and also yeah karl otm
