ok then i'll repost this here:

the hard, snaking vocal glissando when she sings "body tyyyyyyyyype" blew my mind the first time I heard it. I can't recall this particular melodic trick being used in another pop song, so it sounds super-fresh to me. also just a brilliant hook.

J. Sam, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 16:47 (eight years ago) link

and yeah, the song is basically ed banger redux, but it's really well-done, so i'm not mad at it

J. Sam, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 16:48 (eight years ago) link

if it were produced better, i would be less mad at it. not even the production impresses me. if she were beating someone else at this old game, i would also be more impressed; instead it just sounds like a flat imitation to me.

Out of all the Demi Lovato songs I've ever taken the time to listen to, Cool for the Summer is the one I like the most.

Kind of promised myself I'd ignore her forever after this commercial began airing, though.

the first two demi lovato records are like disney's my chemical romance and i love them a lot

pop demi is really hit or miss but "cool for the summer" is wonderful

The 0:44 section unfortunately reminds me of Bodyrockers, but it’ll probably grow on me.

Vasco da Gama, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 17:35 (eight years ago) link

essentially 'cool for the summer' is this song

and i actually remotely like that song. just not for Demi.

katherine's dismissal of "every single from the past few albums" is outrageous, "Give Your Heart A Break" and "Really Don't Care" and "Heart Attack" were all awesome.

not really

Greer, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:41 (eight years ago) link

give your heart a break was definitely a relief for popular radio; it at least sounded fresh and earnest

surm, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:59 (eight years ago) link

katherine otm about demi in all aspects really except for the 0:44 litmus test thing.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 19:05 (eight years ago) link

i think surm's mashup is a slight stretch but i guess

i am warming up to "cool for the summer" honestly, the elements that seemed slight at first (incl. parts of her vocal performance) i now realize contribute to an intriguing sense of drama that builds pretty well throughout the song. i do have mixed feelings on the queer-affection-as-ephemeral-experimentation theme still but w/e, guess we can't expect anything better in music destined to chart! and it is done far more tastefully than e.g. "i kissed a girl" obv.

"give your heart a break" is amazing, still my favorite demi single by far. earnest is the right word.

surm, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link

heart attack otoh is one of those songs that i neither find good or bad, it's mainly just hilarious to me, it's so CRAZY

surm, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

I'm hetero so YMMV but to me the thing that sets this apart from "I Kissed a Girl" is the utter lack of irony. where katy perry was "wink wink, tee hee, aren't I so transgressive ;)" demi lovato delivers the song like hooking up with this girl is the most life-or-death of matters

for sale: baby shoes, never worn your ass (katherine), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

i love i kissed a girl so much needless to say. i don't think she thinks she's being transgressive, she's just like, kissing a girl and being sexy about it

surm, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 19:25 (eight years ago) link

things that are great about this from my perspective:

- the desperate melodrama of "dying for each other" just after meeting
- the fluttering zelda noise when the song shifts gear
- aggressive ed banger guitar
- the fact that it represents a further step towards the charlixcxification of pop music
- the corny piano hooks
- body tyyyyyyyype

carly bae jepsen (monotony), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 21:37 (eight years ago) link

This one, Really Don't Care ... I def. hear hints of a whole bunch of assembly line music for hite stuff, from Katy Perry to Nicki. But this one has a nice minor key edge to it I like. I also like how, yeah, unlike I Kissed a Girl, which I didn't like, this one feels more overtly grown-up sexual, less hedging. I mean, as a parent it freaks me out, but as a listener it's different enough from a lot of summer cartoon sex jams.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 22:20 (eight years ago) link

I hear no justice in this? Americans what are you on

Idk I've been v underwhelmed by demi for a few years, the hyper-jitter of Heart Attack aside, and she doesn't even remotely sound like herself in this, but it was just so immediate in that way all the besr pop summer classix are, rather than the sub-ldr selena gomez or the unmuscular move towards indie pop of crj (both of which I like a lot but neither are saviours of pop in any way)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 23:01 (eight years ago) link

for some reason it reminds me of "voulez-vous" and I can't put my finger on why

for sale: baby shoes, never worn your ass (katherine), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 23:13 (eight years ago) link

Glad CRJ is not more muscular, probably.

timellison, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 23:46 (eight years ago) link

I hear no justice in this? Americans what are you on

For someone I've seen go intricately into detail about the way certain songs are constructed by putting certain sounds together, I'm amazed you can't hear this. It's Ed Banger from beginning to end.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 00:16 (eight years ago) link

"cool for the summer" is basically the SHOWGIRLS of pop singles: campy, garish, tries WAY too hard, some bi-curiosity, and a "so bad it's good" appeal

i love it

j. winters (josh), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 00:27 (eight years ago) link

i am listening to the song for the 3rd time. the song is good. the *song* itself might in fact be great. maybe the fact that Demi has been more or less grasping at straws in terms of brand for some time now makes the blatant copycat trickery more appealing to some than others. personally, i don't care to hear her sing something that has already been compared to 3 different artists, especially when what made her stick out to begin with was that she had something unique. i've never heard her put this hat on before, which makes me think she's still grasping at straws. i guess i just wish the song had gone to someone else.

xposts - I don't really see how this is Demi trying way too hard, unless you just mean that it's melodramatic

carly bae jepsen (monotony), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 01:06 (eight years ago) link

if anything the last album was demi trying too hard vocally -- possibly to appeal to the "see she really CAN sing" crowd; she seems to have backed off since.

the copycat accusations seem off, especially since the song brought up most often is "domino," possibly the most blatant copycat pop single this decade

for sale: baby shoes, never worn your ass (katherine), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 01:11 (eight years ago) link

i think Katy Perry is what seems to be brought up most. that's what i keep hearing people say when they get into it about this song - that it sounds like katy perry. of course, a quick google search will reveal the same https://www.google.com/#q=was+katy+perry+offered+cool+for+the+summer

but those links seem to have mostly to do with the lyrics. i didn't even know the song was about kissing girls - or that there were 'accusations' RE: 'i kissed a girl.' i thought it was about a boy. the lyrics just didn't jump out me, except for the chorus. but i did immediately think it *sounded* like a Katy Perry song - only in terms of the sound, not the words. it was the first thing that popped into my head. i don't think it's hard to hear, and i don't think she adds much to the KP aesthetic.

surm, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 01:21 (eight years ago) link

That processed electrogrind is what reminded me Perry; the lyrics were secondary.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 01:35 (eight years ago) link

I was really hoping the Todd Terry remix would be amazing as his remix of Hercules & Love Affair's "Do You Feel The Same" is one of my favourite things of the year, but this is merely functional.

luv demi a lot but more as a person than an artist, i know i'm buying into a lot of capitalist machinery but she seems lovely + after rehab has really dedicated herself to being a posi force for young people, hard for me to not be in her corner

i probably love really don't care more but cool for the summer sounds so good on the radio. it hits every 2015-radio-hit marker and then fills out the rest with surprises. and yeah, she's probably a better singer when she isn't so focused on being a singer

qualx, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 04:15 (eight years ago) link

well browsing this thread about a song i listened to for 30 secs and thought 'not for me' has at least made me aware of the existence of todd terry in 2015.

e-bouquet (mattresslessness), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 04:19 (eight years ago) link

i got to work with Demi for an hour or two last year when she was giving a speech about some of the stuff she's been through. she seemed pretty cool! i kept it professional, but i want to tell her i listen to all her albums and have some demos for her to check out.

FLOPSZN (some dude), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 04:21 (eight years ago) link

i don't get the "domino" comparison. like yeah i get that rhythmically and kinda-melodically the chorus lines are a bit similar, but by that logic the chorus to "teenage dream" is comparable to that of kesha's "blah blah blah". i have seen a few people make the comparison but i always forget about it until i see someone mention it again.

anyways the other thing for me that sets this apart from "i kissed a girl" is that the latter's whole winky look-at-me-aren't-i-subversive thing is basically aimed directly at the boyfriend who almost definitely doesn't mind it. in "cool for the summer" demi and her fling are in their own little world, other ppl barely-mentioned only as some ominous forces on the horizon ("don't tell your mother", "if they judge..."). there's of a sense of danger in the way it builds sonically, but the way it leads to such a cathartic release makes it feel more like she's more afraid of what they could do to each other than judgment/"your mother". lol

basically what i am trying to say is yes i've heard this on the radio a few times now and i'm afraid it has me hooked

(also the music vid is not bad by any means but i feel like this song could have had a truly classic video made for it)

dyl, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 06:31 (eight years ago) link

Cool For The Summer and Confident are great singles but this album is a real slog.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 17:29 (eight years ago) link

yeah both this and the selena gomez album were big disappointments. brilliant lead singles, was ready for them to step up and make some really interesting pop albums...instead we get generic, bland titles and incoherent singles-plus-filler

lex pretend, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 18:19 (eight years ago) link

oh dearie me

in any event, i enjoyed confident even though it's kinda sorta really uneven & idk what she or even her label was thinking having iggy azalea slither onto a song, though the presence of nu-dubstep production would seem to indicate the answer is being notably behind the times on a general cultural level.

the singles are tremendous, liked "stone cold," "yes" and "wildfire" beyond that, rest of it i can take or leave (minus the iggy feature, which is execrable)

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link

Spencer, having a gay relationship under multople jurisdictions right now is essentially being willing to die for each other. The melodrama is right for the song

lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 00:32 (eight years ago) link

daavid, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 04:11 (eight years ago) link

"die for each other" is one of the best lines in the song because it brings this manic Spring Breakers aspect of partying in the summer into focus, it gives it an earnest YOLOness, making the memories of our lives having feelings amidst the decadence etc

Cousin Slappy, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 17:29 (eight years ago) link

lex, the likelihood that "Die die each other" is about anxiety related to "having a gay relationship under multiple jurisdictions" is only slightly better than "Got a taste for the cherry/I just want to take a bite" being a reference to a severe case of prunusmania.

I'm not trying to discount the resonance this song may have to gay or bisexual listeners. I think it's brave on a number of levels. But I also think karl's theory seems a lot more likely.

This may be the first high-profile naloxone success story - this opioid/opiate antagonist likely saved Demi's life yesterday, and had it been administered in time could have saved Prince and Petty too. It's becoming much easier and cheaper to obtain this emergency drug. If anyone you know is an recreational heroin, fentanyl, or other opioid user, or a pain sufferer using high doses of these drugs including hydrocodone, oxycodone, Dilauded, or similar meds, be sure they and anyone often at home with them has some naloxone and knows how to use it. Some types can only be administered by another person, not the one barely breathing due to an opioid overdose.

I've got a friend living in an Oxford House (which is a sober/halfway house) and they have two boxes of intranasal naloxone on the kitchen counter. every resident of the house receives instruction on how to administer.

It's imperative to get this into the hands of every addict and friends if addicts. Unthinkable how many lives could and should have been saved just in the past few years.
