Yep. Some of these songs remind me a lot of Under the Cherry Moon/Parade era Prince in particular.

My friend just sent me Believer from this album so I checked out the rest of it. This is a really gorgeous record. I'm surprised how little discussion there is about her considering how popular KING are on here.

Indeed. I just listened to it again for the first time in a few months. So good!

I don't remember it placing in the top 77 albums list for last year. Did it make it lower down on the list? I would have definitely voted for it if I'd heard it.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

I could give you a definitive answer if search was working worth a damn right now, but I'm pretty sure I nominated it.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:08 (seven years ago) link

I just found it. It came in at 772 with just the one vote (14 points). Is there any way we can claim 2016 was her year of impact and give it another chance?

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

It ranked #772 with one vote (14 points).

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

It did get reissued as a "deluxe" version this year, so whoever wants to nominate is welcome to.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link

I'll go for it. I'll have to do some proper campaigning and everything. It seems like the kind of record people would love.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

i still listen to this a lot. sent it to my sis and she loves it too

Spottie, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 21:23 (seven years ago) link

this record was a slight letdown for me but only because the Seven EP is some of my favorite music by anyone ever, still, The Switch is very good.

very nice live rendering of "Distance" here:

Only just found out she has a new album out next week. Just catching up on the singles and everything is sounding so good. Really hyped for this.

Yeah, the latest one, "Can't Hold Me," is super good. Looking forward to this.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 January 2019 05:51 (five years ago) link

Whoa thanks

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 January 2019 04:12 (five years ago) link

Ah, this album is so gorgeous. I really needed this today.

kitchen person, Friday, 25 January 2019 05:06 (five years ago) link

Totally in love with her new album. It makes a nice companion to the recent Natalie Prass one.

Love how much she's channeling Prince on the last few songs.

I know it's still early days, but this is quite comfortably my favourite album of the year so far.

She's the guest on Switched on Pop this week: https://www.switchedonpop.com/lost-found-the-drama-of-pop-form-with-emily-king/

First time I heard her, seemed good, kind of a Prince thing at end: https://www.google.com/search?q=Emily+King+Late+Night+With+Seth+Meyers&oq=Emily+King+Late+Night+With+Seth+Meyers&aqs=chrome..69i57.19671j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Oh god yeah, that is a stunning moment. My current favourite is Running. The vulnerability in her voice when she gets to the chorus, especially towards the end is incredible.

This whole album is an absolute triumph and I really hope more people come round to it over the year.

I just needed to tell somebody.

No news, just psyched I got a copy of 'The Switch' on LP. They go for crazy prices, but I lucked out and won it on ebay for the starting big (which is probably around what it would've cost new in 2015).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 23:22 (three years ago) link

Her new record Special Occasion is just as lovely as the last two, although perhaps lacks a knockout song for me à la "Can't Hold Me" (the Machinedrum remix of this is personally an all timer) or "Off Center".
