Ste otm.

No idea what that landmass is between San Fierro and Liberty City. It's fan art, so it could be anything.

pplains, Thursday, 30 July 2015 14:25 (eight years ago) link

it's fan art depicting a dlc that would include San Fiero (you can see the Golden Gate Bridge) and Las Venturas a la gta 3 version of San Andreas

is this the road where the 5's opening bank robbery happens?

Sure doesn't look like North Yankton/Fargo, but that's not a bad idea.

so i played through this recently finally, it sucks. nothing you do in it was fun. and i honestly don't get how people who have watched movies and tv shows before are genuinely impressed by the writing on this game. it sets up a basic, cliche conflict for each character and then just hammers on that for the whole fuckin game.and you're forced so many times to just drive for a long time and listen to trevor call michael a sellout snitch suburban dad again and again. and even in the last wet fart of a heist is padded out with shit like the whole 'steal three cars and drive them across the city to your garage' tasks. i was like, surely this isn't just a boring chore, maybe on the third car you get ambushed or something. no.
idk maybe ive just outgrown this series. they even fixed a bunch of the shitty gameplay elements that i hated in previous games.

I've spent about ten minutes on single player. Online is where it's at.

I honestly don't understand how anyone is impressed by the writing in 90% of games.

Could just as well mean the hackers.

Hackers have put crazy stuff in garages before, at least online.

pplains, Sunday, 13 December 2015 21:08 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I've seen some crazy hacker shit. Like everyone turning into weird animal mascots, everyone on the server being blown up simultaneously (which has happened a number of times). All the NPCs were obese for a stretch.

I've been spending my GTA online time these days stockpiling cash so that I can put bounties on shitheads with overtly racist nicknames. It's my way of giving back to the community.

I only noticed how lonely campaign gaming or playing multiplayer without knowing anyone is after I played a bit with some friends of mine at work. Hard to go back to going solo all the time IME.

calstars, Wednesday, 10 February 2016 19:06 (eight years ago) link

This is still the only game I've played online. I think I like the idea way more in theory than I tend to in practice.

maybe my clam is just more toxic (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 10 February 2016 19:22 (eight years ago) link

I miss it too, but I played it way too much.

Maybe I'll do this every decade, starting with GTA3 in 2004, this one in 2013, etc.

I was playing too late one night and these two guys with accents (to my American ears) got into it about something. Finally in a lull, the conversation went

GUY #1: So where you from? Sydney?

GUY #2: Yeah. You Kiwi?

GUY #1: Christchurch. Got you pretty good back there.

GUY #2: Go die in another fuckin' earthquake, why don't you.

pplains, Wednesday, 10 February 2016 20:42 (eight years ago) link

I was in a GTA lobby once with a bunch of people who were all on audio chat (unlike me). At some point someone said something derogatory about native americans / first nations and a few other guys took offense, and it evolved in this long discussion about how one dude's uncle was an "indian" or that he himself was part indian and he didn't appreciate that, and all of these (white?!?!) guys with Minnesotan/Wisconsin accents (CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE, SORRY) began to have this bizarre but heartening discussion about race and stereotypes. I wish I'd recorded it, it was super adorable, and very unlike the normal racist multiplayer experience.

Anyway I beat them all at racing. :)

I used to play Counterstrike as 'ger-onimo' and got shitloads of abuse from white Americans who assumed I was native American. I used to fake scalp their bodies with my knife after killing them.

Such a rich open-world canvas, yet so boring compared to, say, Skyrim.

I'd rate the top PS3 open worlds (that I've played) roughly: Skyrim > Just Cause 2 > GTAV > Lego Marvel Super-Heroes > Red Faction: Guerrilla > the Saints Row games

Good online sesh yesterday. The levels seemed nicely balanced (no level 6000 douches), and this one dude with seemingly endless cash was putting out bounties on everyone and hiding out in weird places, forcing everyone else to alternate between running/hiding for their lives and forming shaky alliances in an attempt to waste this clown. I managed to land a helicopter on top of his jet while he was hovering thousands of feet in the air...and then slid right off his wing when I got out to sticky bomb him. But I managed to hole up in that one airport building and survive my own bounty in the face of a siege, which felt pretty badass.

I played this for the first time in ages a few weeks ago and had an epically fun time playing VIP with this dude for an hour--after which he invited me back to his yacht, which was cool as I hadn't seen one, but then I was like, are we just supposed to hang out now or... I felt strangely out of my depth all of a sudden and felt compelled to make an excuse and take off. "ok gotta go!" and jumped overboard, like in a movie. It was so weird! First time I've ever had IRL-style awkwardness in a video game.

I felt wrong about stealing one of his jet-skis, and was halfway through swimming back to shore when it occurred to me I could just log off.

antexit, Monday, 4 April 2016 16:21 (eight years ago) link

Ha. I accidentally joined a heist (no headset) and backed out as soon as I realized, but I wound up in the dude's apartment anyway. So I just hung out for a few while he was out heisting. Nice pad, totally felt like a B&E.

Always felt weird going to parties in someone's apartment. And everyone would go downstairs to look at the host's cars.

There was this period where you could kill yourself on whiskey, beer and cigarettes. So I'd do that, die in someone's apartment, and then go back there when I respawned to see a double of myself walking around.

I caved and got this for PC, it's currently on a deal in Steam.

First person is great in car, but a bit rubbish on foot imo. It's alright if you're in a shooting part of the game but general running about doesn't do it for me.

Am enjoying the extra wildlife (the eating peyote thing is a bit lame tbh), and obviously the better draw distance and smoother graphics.

Nice bonus because I already own on console is that it opens up all those extra cars in the main game.
