is banning posters for beefing with mods really what we want to do?

shoutout to the mods sincerely but i think if you take on the responsibility of authority you have to recognize that people are going to get mad at you and sometimes lash out, and this instance is really very benign. the ban is spiteful.

it does seem excessive, even if he was being a dick (which he was) but otoh I don't care that much, I cut the mods some slack given how well this place is run in general, and I'm sure D-40 can find something else useful to do for 30 days besides defend Gawker to a bunch of prickly jerks on a msg board soooo ... yeah I'm not too fired up about this.

honestly deej gets on everyone's nerves but "don't ban valuable members of the community over personal vendettas" doesn't seem like it's a lot to ask

There should be consistency. If we are allowed to lash out at each other, we should also be allowed to lash out at mods. They don’t deserve special treatment just because they chose to take on extra responsibility.

The current crop of mods don’t seem to deserve “the benefit of the doubt,” tbh. They’ve done one super hasty thing and now this questionable shit just in the past few days!

i do support banning posters if it's for ratings or as a cliffhanger like when [redacted] was killed in game of thrones last month.

There is no rule about being nice to people on ILX that I am aware of. People have always been rude to each other here, and people have always been nice to each other here. If you want to put that rule in place, I think that’s a whole other debate, but it seems pretty clear to me from how things have gone for the past many years I’ve been here is that most things are tolerated between posters short of shit that is obviously beyond the pale. Calling someone a “chickenshit idiot” or whatever is totally not beyond the pale in the context of many other things that have been said here and allowed to stand w/o someone getting hit with a ban.
