deadspin post sez he'll do video podcasts
― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 16:27 (eight years ago) link
i'm guessing zach lowe will be contractually barred from appearing, which would be sad
― usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 16:27 (eight years ago) link
simmons getting an irrelevant weekly hbo show and never writing again is the perfect slow death, rip
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 16:28 (eight years ago) link
yeah i have an early an unfounded fear that the show will go heavy on celeb-level guests when i really want to hear simmons and stein talk about the nba in february for 75 minutes
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 16:29 (eight years ago) link
he should do posts on medium or something in connection to the episode topics, maybe, even longer and with more references, drink the haters' tears
this does give him the ability to actually say whatever the hell he wants, because what does ESPN, for example, have to threaten HBO with? "u can't do hard knocks anymore?"
― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 16:34 (eight years ago) link
er, the NFL, not ESPN
heres to hoping he holds a viscous unquenchable grudge against espn

otm
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 16:38 (eight years ago) link
yeah it would be a shame if he didn't hold an espn grudge
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 16:39 (eight years ago) link
im sure he will but just i require it to be extremely public and unrelenting, otherwise he is no use to me
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 16:40 (eight years ago) link
lol

hbo to make move of espn oral history starring frank caliendo, hybrid of beloved hbo classics the late shift and rich little's a christmas carol

Otm it's so funny that he's basically terrible on TV and that's basically gonna be all he does now
As cad noted all I really want from him is minutia pods in dogs days of the NBA and NFL seasons and maybe another hoops book or two sometime and he's probably gonna basically do the grantland basketball hour with more celeb handjobbery
― juice college (agent hibachi), Thursday, 23 July 2015 18:04 (eight years ago) link
Do hope he has a lifetime public beef w the worldwide leader though, that would be solid entertainment

i guess as part of his contract it says he can still publish a column elsewhere and everyone is assuming he will do so but idk he seems pretty sick of writing
― lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 18:06 (eight years ago) link
Can't wait for his preview of the NFL season wherein he gives each team a summarizing quote from Carnivale or whatever
Maybe he'll rank all the Dream On babez

Why do we think Simmons is only getting a show? I bet he takes over HBO Sports.
A less likely prediction: HBO bids on NFL or NBA rights.
― Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 7 August 2015 01:29 (eight years ago) link
like as an executive? idk that he wants to do that or like why he'd want to do that
― johnny crunch, Friday, 7 August 2015 02:12 (eight years ago) link
there is an easy overlap w/ their monday night documentaries and him reinventing some 30 for 30 style doc series probably
― johnny crunch, Friday, 7 August 2015 02:15 (eight years ago) link
the leagues all have their own channels now; if they were to go that route there's no need to involve hbo
― mookieproof, Friday, 7 August 2015 02:20 (eight years ago) link
hbo should be fighting to get saturday night football imo but only for a five year contract

barnwell doing the grantland weekly nfl picks column - suddenly simmons' departure feels very real, as i realize i am accidentally reading the grantland weekly nfl picks column
― Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 11 September 2015 19:30 (eight years ago) link
he did it during the suspension last year also. simmons pod back october 1st.
― balls, Friday, 11 September 2015 19:50 (eight years ago) link
i like the column today though it's not really a picks column. more like another season preview with picks wedged in somewhere. i would like to know why barnwell thinks the redskins are gonna cover +3.5 against the dolphins!!

i've been listening to a lot of pods at the gym so i'm amped for this
― call all destroyer, Friday, 25 September 2015 00:22 (eight years ago) link
maybe this should go on grantland thread but jalen and jacoby are getting a daily espn radio show
― balls, Friday, 25 September 2015 00:26 (eight years ago) link
i can't say i've ever listened, any good?
― usic ally (k3vin k.), Friday, 25 September 2015 00:27 (eight years ago) link
it's an enjoyable enough podcast. i don't know how it'll work on radio, there's a half assed aspect to the pod that i can't imagine they'll replicate on radio.
― balls, Friday, 25 September 2015 00:41 (eight years ago) link
Jalen and Jacoby are pretty good especially when they dig into jalens stories or have fun news to break down. The off the dome aspect is actually kind of fun usually but they can get a little aimless occasionally and I'm a little tired of jalens catchphrases but maybe a daily structure will inject some extra life. Would definitely listen to them on radio over most other boring ass sports host doods
Also the story of Jalen jacking Patrick Ewing's TV is all-time

Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 14h14 hours agoRandom things I'm excited about starting next month, vol. 24: finally being able to go on Mike Francesa's show. This will be yuuuuuuge.

Not so much happy to see him fail as constantly frustrated that he's the kind of person that gets put in a position to do so.

i only care about zach lowe
― Spottie, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:17 (eight years ago) link
lowe will be fine, i hope he goes w/ simmons cuz i like his podcast, like him providing contrast w/ simmons, and most importantly like him not hidden behind insider (i have insider, it's just the principle of the thing). i see lowe's grantland stuff pop up w/ the normal espn stuff in the feed or whatever in the nba section which i don't think i do w/ the other sports writing at grantland. barnwell would leave as soon as simmons called, i'd hope mays would go w/ him cuz i enjoy that podcast and mays goes a long way in making barnwell tolerable on the pod. apparently whatever site he's setting up will still cover pop culture which idk, morris was the only dude there i really thought was very good (as opposed to adequate, like what you'd find at vulture or something) and he's gone to the times. simmons seems like a great boss but if i was a sports writer i could see debating whether you'd want to potentially burn a bridge w/ espn, which probably is the pinnacle for yr profession. whereas w/ lambert or pappademas or whoever on the pop cult side there's no incentive to stay, espn will probably slowly shut grantland down over the course of the next year or year and a half so either you take a job elsewhere now or later.
― balls, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:29 (eight years ago) link
yeah as long as lowe keeps doing his podcasts i'm happy, though i do love his pods with simmons
― k3vin k., Monday, 12 October 2015 22:37 (eight years ago) link
his podcast w/ windhorst was good
― J0rdan S., Monday, 12 October 2015 22:38 (eight years ago) link
if anything happens to grantland all the sports people will just be folded into main espn, it's the pop culture people who might get boxed out
― J0rdan S., Monday, 12 October 2015 22:39 (eight years ago) link
maybe it is more complicated getting the headliner sports dudes because of espn but based on the ppl i have seen so far you could believe they're doing something pop culture focus, no/fringe sports
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:42 (eight years ago) link
this is mean and unfair i know but i always giggle a little at how windhorst always sounds winded on podcasts
― balls, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:44 (eight years ago) link
simmons is supposed to be on francesa's show on weds
