In order of who I want to win:

Padraig
Sergio
Spieth

(in order of how much money I'll win if they win)

paul dunne ftw

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 July 2015 13:32 (eight years ago) link

5 tied for the lead now

Dunne would be my second choice after Spieth. Looked it up, and an amateur hasn't won a major since 1933 (not Jones--Johnny Goodman). Dunne would forfeit the $1.8 million prize money: "Amateur players are not eligible to win prize money and therefore, should an amateur win The 144th Open first place prize money will be distributed proportionately among the professional players who have made the cut." More humiliation: no money for Tiger.

i was reading that this morning - he won't go short of a beer this evening if that happens. p tough on him though - £1.1m could make you for a long time, especially if this was a one-off.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 July 2015 13:40 (eight years ago) link

doesn't look like dunne will have to worry about that prize money :(

call all destroyer, Monday, 20 July 2015 13:48 (eight years ago) link

Dunne looks like he's headed for 78 or something. Even if he doesn't win, I hope he doesn't have one of these career-defining meltdowns.

clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 13:48 (eight years ago) link

i guess he still loses prize money regardless of how low he sinks

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 July 2015 13:57 (eight years ago) link

true and that does suck

call all destroyer, Monday, 20 July 2015 13:59 (eight years ago) link

i mean i suppose for your sponsorship and all the other worries of a young amateur golfer, this is probably still great for his career.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 July 2015 14:16 (eight years ago) link

this is so exciting btw - so glad i'm working from home!

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 July 2015 14:18 (eight years ago) link

Good bounce-back by Dunne.

The three amateurs up near the top are going to combine for a lot of money regardless. They ought to pass that on to some charity--do all the professionals really need to pocket an extra $50,000 or whatever?

xp work from home golfstream hi-5

call all destroyer, Monday, 20 July 2015 14:29 (eight years ago) link

haha - hi-5 returned. i worked my ass off this morning to allow myself to do a particularly easy piece of work for the afternoon. my dad is texting me constantly, he has harrington at 110-1, oosthuizen at 50-1, and dunne at 7/1 to be leading amateur. #gamblor

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 July 2015 14:36 (eight years ago) link

99 times out of a 100, your dad would have that last one locked up by now. But not today.

clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 14:41 (eight years ago) link

Just going to complain again about how horribly busy my shift was today, when it should have been nice and quiet.

Leishman hanging on..

xyzzzz__, Monday, 20 July 2015 16:43 (eight years ago) link

Oops

Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Monday, 20 July 2015 16:44 (eight years ago) link

Had to duck out for a dentist appointment...Double-bogey (four strokes from 100 feet?) and then two birdies--wow. The announcers seem to be indicating there just aren't enough scoring opportunities left for Spieth.

clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link

Zach Johnson in pole position tbh

Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Monday, 20 July 2015 16:47 (eight years ago) link

wow insane shot out of the bunker by leishman, ugh

yeah the front 9 is where most of the birdies are

Looking like a play-off right now.

Yes--two to four guys.

I felt the same way, but it sounds like he has a good story too--what is the story with his wife they keep referring to?

Way to go Spieth!

clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:08 (eight years ago) link

She almost died apparently.

Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:09 (eight years ago) link

It's a pretty good story tbh.

Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:10 (eight years ago) link

Amazing what Spieth is up to.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:15 (eight years ago) link

Not bad, but what a putt to have to stand over.

clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:24 (eight years ago) link

Baseball analysts would have had a field day with the announcer there: "Statistically, this distance is not Spieth's strength, but he's such a clutch player, you can throw the stats out the window." And so he misses.

clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:29 (eight years ago) link

Weird--if Spieth sticks his like Day did, and if Day spins his like Spieth did, they're both close.

clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:39 (eight years ago) link

spieth gave that a good go

wisdom be leakin out my louche douche truths (k3vin k.), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:41 (eight years ago) link

couple of painful shots for spieth in those last few holes

call all destroyer, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:42 (eight years ago) link

Great try--I think Trevino passed Nicklaus much earlier in the round in '72. Contrary to the announcers, I think the pressure did get to him a little bit near the end, on the one putt and on the approach into 18. I'll root for Leishman now, but my interest has dwindled significantly.

clemenza, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:46 (eight years ago) link

Should have put money on Oosthuizen today.

Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:52 (eight years ago) link

Most folks I know had money on Oosthuizen. Not sure why - they may well have had money on lots of people.
