weed has a psychotropic effect unrelated to addiction

not for everyone? for heavy long-term users, the psychotropic effect tells your body that it doesn't need to produce neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. for users who quit after years of heavy use, it can take awhile (6 months - 2 years) for your brain to start producing these chemicals naturally, in which case you feel depressed/anxious/irritable. sorry if i sound like some reddit bunghole, this is just standard boilerplate substance abuse/addiction stuff.

brimstead, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 19:32 (eight years ago) link

for sure, "withdrawal" generally used as shorthand for the symptoms of physical addiction when it comes to dependencies or addictions, it's not just "I withdrew the substance". didn't feel like going into that upthread

Upright Mammal (mh), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 20:03 (eight years ago) link

NI - great work on this thread in the face of, as you put it "snotty comments from sad dudes on the internet". You've really helped de-bunk a lot of stuff for me. I currently use liberty flights cartos with an e-go battery and their golden virginia liquid but quality is a bit hit and miss.

So to reiterate from upthread, your starter kit is istick 30, mini nautilus and what liquid?

Thanks!

the article don, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 20:30 (eight years ago) link

yes, the istick 30w (£30) and the mini nautilus (£20) will last you a long long time. perfect for a beginner but the option of 30w means you can test out sub ohm tanks and see if they're for you. best sub ohm tank is the kanger subtank (£25). i'd recommend you go to a shop to buy these and ask the shop guy to talk you through it all, but if you're feeling brave/thrifty order from amazon. if you're feeling braver/thriftier you can order from chinese site fasttech.com (only buy the ones labelled 'authentic', avoid the 'styled' for now) but you'll have to wait two or three weeks.

as for liquid, it all depends on your tastes and i'm uk-based so the most popular ones with my lot might not be available in america. if you can easily get hold of watermelon wave and gummi bear by pink spot, give them a go, almost everyone i know loves them. also try out lemonade/pink lemonade by whatever brand as that's usually a safe bet.

for the high end thick gloopy liquids (ie. high vg) to use in sub ohm tanks, try out mother's milk by suicide bunny - it's a creamy custardy thing, hint of strawberry - or milk & honey by cosmic fog. good inoffensive neutral-ish flavours. but this stuff is so dependent on personal preference your best bet is to go to an ecig shop and try out a few different flavours. ask which are most popular from each range. i can usually tell if i'll like it by smelling it.

it does bug me that people spend so much money on the fluids because i know how cheap they are to make. DIY stuff isn't for everyone, especially not if you're just a casual user, but it's v satisfying, plus if you flog it cheap to your mates everyone's a winner.

NI, Thursday, 9 July 2015 00:45 (eight years ago) link

should probably point out, pink spot and suicide bunny aren't especially well-liked or reputable companies, lot of hysterical ranting online about how their labs aren't that clean and the owners are liars and scoundrels etc. if any of that bothers you, best look elsewhere.

Have both these and have been really underwhelmed. Hoping they're taste better once I do get one of these fancier models you all are talking about.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 9 July 2015 14:42 (eight years ago) link

i was gona say, those two kinda neutral-ish so a good starting point but my personal favourite from suicide bunny is madrina - a creamy melon flavour. managed to make my own slightly-improved version which i'm mad chuffed about.

but yeah, if i understand right you've been using mother's milk at 11w, enbb, and i can't imagine getting much out of it at that strength. the high-end stuff really comes into its own at 30w and upwards, loads of subtle tastes come out, rich thick vapour. it might not be your bag though so it's worth asking in a shop if you can test it out on one of their sub ohm tanks

Summary: ecigarettes are not great for you, but they might be better than regular cigarettes. I'm not sure whether the testing drew a distinction between e-cigs and vaping, either.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 20:46 (eight years ago) link

tbh people say "vaping" to mean e-cigs 99% of the time now

I nearly just squeezed menthol e-liquid into my eyes rather than eye drops. The bottles are similar. I was hovering the bottle bottle my eye and caught myself.

the diacetyl thing is a bit straw-clutchy, there's much much more of it in the average cigarette than a tank of ejuice. not that it's not an issue, but it's not really the smoking gun that'll bring the whole thing to its knees. bit more info here: http://blog.thedripclub.com/everybody-is-talking-about-vaping-and-popcorn-lung-again-so-heres-a-graph

and related to the discussion upthread, interesting stuff about the dangers/non-dangers of nicotine here: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/e-cigs-inconvenient-truth-its-much-safer-to-vape-20151221?page=3

Rather than occupying a place on the same spectrum that allows caffeine and alcohol to be consumed without stigma, today the word "nicotine" conjures up images of amputated limbs and metastasizing tumors — even though, as Russell made clear, nicotine in itself has never been the deadly culprit in cigarettes.

It may come as a surprise to learn that nicotine, when removed from cigarettes, is relatively benign. Though not free of risks — it can harm a fetus and may affect developing adolescent brains — it also has some benefits. A beguiling substance, nicotine operates as both an upper and a downer depending on the state of the user, proven to simultaneously sharpen focus and calm nerves. "In some ways I think of nicotine as the perfect psychotropic drug," says Paul Newhouse, a scientist at Vanderbilt University. He has spent his career administering nicotine to improve cognitive functioning in those suffering a variety of conditions, from Alzheimer's to Parkinson's to the mental fog created by chemotherapy and HIV medications. "The nicotinic receptors in the brain act as modulators rather than classic transmitters, scanning the system and stimulating what needs to be stimulated and relaxing what needs to be relaxed," Newhouse says, explaining both nicotine's therapeutic potential and appeal for recreational use. "That's why you have a smoker who uses a cigarette to wake up and to go to sleep."

Since the Eighties, anti-smoking groups have taken to underscoring the dangers of smoking by declaring that nicotine is as addictive as heroin — a shudder-inducing claim repeated today in anti-vaping efforts like the "Still Blowing Smoke" campaign currently being rolled out in California. The truth, however, has always been far more complicated. Rats are not prone to self-administer the drug in laboratory settings, for instance, as they will a substance like cocaine. Newhouse, in his research, supplies nicotine to patients primarily through patches, and even those who have been on the drug for a year show no symptoms of withdrawal when their trial period concludes. "No one goes out and buys a pack of cigarettes when they're done," he says. "For someone like me, who is using nicotine to help people, it's a disservice to portray nicotine as being as addictive as heroin when it absolutely is nowhere close."

Mitch Zeller, the director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, the arm of the agency currently working on regulations for e-cigs, concedes that the new products have presented a formidable challenge to the idea that nicotine is anything but a hazard. "Electronic cigarettes have become the poster child for the questions that, on a societal level, we need to be asking about nicotine," he says. "None of them have easy answers." Zeller points out that federal approval for over-the-counter doses of nicotine in the form of gums and patches (with no labels warning of addiction) is evidence that it is not the insidious substance many believe it to be. "How could the same compound associated with so much death and disease be so safe that you can buy it without a doctor's prescription?" he asks. "The answer is that it's about the delivery mechanism, not the drug."

While nicotine can be ingested in a variety of generally harmless ways, it is only when inhaled that its full powers — and potential for addiction — are unlocked. From the lungs it reaches the brain within seconds, providing the satisfying jolt that smokers crave. (A nicotine patch, by contrast, takes many minutes longer.) The habit that is as addictive as heroin, in other words, is smoking tobacco cigarettes, not nicotine consumption. Which is to say that smoking never came to be demonized solely because it is addictive, but because its addictive qualities fueled a dependence that kills. This may seem like splitting hairs, save for the fact that America has anything but an unequivocal issue with drug addiction; if we did, we'd be funneling Starbucks patrons into rehab clinics, pitying those who "need" a glass of wine to unwind rather than joining them for happy hour, and viewing large swaths of the pharmaceutical industry in the same light we do corner drug-slingers.

I smoked for 20 years, then quit, but an uptick in my social life has led to more drinking/going out, and I've been smoking when I drink. This has been bothering me a lot (health concerns mainly) so I got vape thingy and I like it! I was concerned that I would still want 'the real thing' on nights out, but I dont! The vape hits the spot.

I got a Moto Plus, very well reviewed and cheap @ $55. Ultra compact too. I don't think this model is widely available however.

I'm totally unselfconscioss about, probably bc I'm too old to give a f-

My main concern is that vaping will, beyond just replacing my occasional social smoking, get me really hooked on nicotine again. But hey, it's good by cigarettes and that's awesome.

Tried this again to wean off nicotine, discovered that most are sub-ohm resistance and designed for giant clouds of vapor. Got one with higher resistance and it actually feels like smoking a light cigarette rather than just a harsh irritation in my throat.

Still not willing to do this in public.

I can't do it in public because of the association but it's cut me back from a pack a day to one pack a week (and then only if I go to a bar one night).

Incredible that the Reefer Madness approach is still being taken in 2018

“We are seeing the vaping and the ‘Juuling’ across the board,” a substance-abuse counsellor in Arlington, Virginia, told a local radio station, surmising that vapes might contain “cocaine liquid.” (It is possible, though difficult, to crack open a Juul pod and fill it with your own liquid. This would be a complicated and perhaps unprecedented way to do cocaine.) An assistant principal in North Dakota warned the Grand Forks Herald about the dangers of e-cigarette liquid, which he had inadvertently touched after confiscating a bottle that he found in a student’s backpack. Soon afterward, he began to feel nauseated and “real emotional,” he said.

i love the juul but I'm seemingly allergic and can only vape the mango and, to a lesser extent, mint flavours without coughing up a lung. as in with the tobacco flavoured one i cannot even get enough into my lungs to exhale any visible vapour without having a coughing fit like i just greened out smoking a gravity bong. oh well i would've gotten way more addicted than I've ever been to cigarettes, which I've hardly been smoking lately as I've cut down on booze massively
