i've been to a (good) georgian restaurant in gravesend but i find it hard to resist l&b spumoni gardens if i am in that neighborhood. the russian joint sietsema wrote about this week sounded great tho.

have you been to the uighur place in brighton beach, cafe kashkar? i've only had takeout from there but it was excellent

i will go anywhere that has pickled oily fish on the menu tbh

Everyone and I mean everyone raves about Spumoni Gardens. I'm gonna have to go to see what the fuss is all about even though I can't eat probably anything! Also I biked past a large fresh pasta place on New Utrecht Ave yesterday that looked intrsting.

It was actually chinavision's other half that sent me to Kashkar! Was good, a bit more Central Asian cuisiney than the other place I like on Brighton Beach 2nd with the giant golden bowl on the awning.

When I had a Russian model roommate for a minute last summer she brought some oily fish home one night and shared it, with tasteless pasty boiled potatoes and some pickles (which admittedly were great). I thought I liked fishy fish but uh no it was awful.

Lol

i'd better buy some creamed herring in a jar before i fully commit

, Friday, 3 July 2015 14:49 (eight years ago) link

Kashkar doesn't serve alcohol btw tho they let us BYOB.

spumoni gardens is that crazy throwback pre-foodie place that people think of when they say "red sauce" Italian. easy to build up into some kinda elysian fields ideal when it's just good kinda greasy pizza and ices. summer in the city yall. we sat inside the "formal" dining room once on a super-humid day and had pasta - wish i could make sauce like that. after the waiter took our orders and walked away, my son (a native new yorker albeit manhattan) looked at me wide eyed and said quietly "is he faking that accent?" and I laughed and said no! like i said, old-school brooklyn.

i was all set to walk over to superiority burger and wait in line but they are doing the fake scarcity thing rn, no lunch and weekends only, lame

adam, Friday, 3 July 2015 15:30 (eight years ago) link

i love the look of that place but i heard it moved (off of coney island ave by the black sea bookstore)

speaking of brighton beach have yall been to the former movie theater/current russian fancy grocery store? it's not as good as brighton beach bazaar but it is a cool scene

super salty, v little flavor. mushy frozen steak wedge fries covered in seasoned salt were honestly kinda perplexing.

as someone who enjoys mission chinese i'm not entirely against the concept but i'm struggling to see what new ideas they're bringing to the table

M. Wells steakhouse recently for my birthday, actually second trip. I love it overall, but weirdly the steak we got was the least exciting thing - NY Strip, which they char on the outside no matter how you ask for it done and oversalt. Best things were actually the fresh oysters, which had some kind of an apple-chive topping, and the trout, which comes fresh from their tank and is served whole.

Generally really love what they do, both at the Steakhouse and at the little joint at PS1.

article is dumb too, basically sounds like any restaurant that isn't brand new/cutting-edge falls into the author's definition. E.g. in my old neighborhood he includes both a cheap Polish diner and a good but standard-issue French bistro.

white bear in flushing is sort of amazingly mediocre but im happy white people have been tricked into thinking its good

, Monday, 18 January 2016 18:16 (eight years ago) link

my theory is when white ppl see the wontons come out splashed in red oil they feel scared but since its not actually spicy at all white ppl feel proud of themselves for being able to eat soemthing that looks spicy

I guess I'm here through the holidays... any recommendations as to what's open on Thanksgiving?

(Under normal circumstances, I'd go to 69 Bayard as xx-posted above but belated RIP)

haven't been to any of the above. if you're looking for something in chinatown i'd try uncle lou's.

, Thursday, 24 November 2022 02:29 (one year ago) link

Yah, I'm not much of a holiday food fan so I figured I'd just walk around Chinatown and see what was open. Thanks for the Uncle Lou's tip.
