xxxp one of my friends carries 3 pens with him because apparently he gets sick of the taste. tbf he was a very heavy smoker so I expect he vapes quite a lot

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 2 July 2015 14:02 (eight years ago) link

Yeah a mate of mine is all "ive given up smoking, this is amazing!" but he honestly has the vape pen shoved in his mouth 94/7, he says he even smokes in bed now.

I checked Snoops , and it is for real (Trayce), Friday, 3 July 2015 04:49 (eight years ago) link

ie I think hes at it way more now than he ever was smoking.

sort of fascinated how "vape shop" seems to have become the default american strip mall store. like some weird convergence of the suburban storefront real estate market and lifestyle trends seem to have made them more common than like dry cleaners or liquor stores.

ENBB, that's a weird one. what set-up do you have? (tank & battery)

and when you say a 3.7v battery, do you mean you have the power set to 3.7v? if so, that should work fine. trying not to sound techy here, but 3.7v with a 1.8ohm coil equates to 7.6w and that's all good. 15w is the highest you should go with a 1.8ohm coil, it'll burn the cotton higher than that. (it's best to ignore volts and only look at wattage. your battery should show you the wattage on it, stick with that)

as for the coils, they should definitely last longer than 2.5 days. i toke mine constantly (oh the humanity) and get over a week from each. i have had some that screw up quicker than others, maybe you got a really bad batch? how long has the current coil lasted you?

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 03:01 (eight years ago) link

as for the cannabis vaporiser stuff, hands up, i wasn't informed enough to comment. i was thinking of the type i had in the 90s and they're prob different now, dunno. was going to look into it but realised i couldn't give less of a fuck. for all the lolvape photos on this thread, weed culture is ten times worse. maybe start a new thread for the renegade outlaw weedvape bros?

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 03:14 (eight years ago) link

weed has a psychotropic effect unrelated to addiction whereas vaping is literally about giving your nicotinic brain receptors a better bath.

e-bouquet (mattresslessness), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 04:14 (eight years ago) link

Hey NI - I have three batteries but none of them are variable voltage or show the watts. They're just standard 3.7v. Does that make sense?

I'm frustrated because I think that my coil is bad again. This one has, I think, been in there since last Wednesday but it's still annoying. I got like 2 weeks out of the first one that it came with and have been told that's about standard but the longest any have lasted is a week. I don't even use it all that much. Maybe my tank is bad? Hmpf.

conrad, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 13:57 (eight years ago) link

x-post - This is all too techy and I'm not into it enough to care and want to build my own coils. Bah.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:15 (eight years ago) link

2 weeks is standard? how much liquid do you go through?

they told me that one coil should last about 30mg worth of fluid which for me is like... well more than a couple weeks anyway. i think i am on my third coil and i got mine months ago.

Bouncy Castlevania (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:40 (eight years ago) link

Prob about 2ml a day? They said one coil should last 30 ml? :(

I don't think the one now is burnt out but it's spitting and flooding. What can cause that?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:53 (eight years ago) link

the first thing you need to do is ditch this battery. it sounds like one i had when i first got into all this and it's good as a tester, to work out if you're into all this, but man, blow £25-30 on a a proper battery and end all this heartache and pain.

best one to get: istick 30w. you want to be at 15w or below with a tank using a 1.8ohm coil, but it also means you can give sub ohm a go at some point as it can go up to 30w. if you want to save a few quid get the istick 20w but i'd say it's better to get the other one.

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:09 (eight years ago) link

i didn't even know you could buy non variable wattage/voltage batteries any more, really can't imagine the modern range of tanks and coils are suited for those fixed strength batteries. (if you can give me the brand name and model though i'd like to read up on them more)

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:11 (eight years ago) link

http://www.ego-two.com/ego-ii-2200mah.html

is one of them?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:38 (eight years ago) link

istick 30w is exactly what i have and it's fantastic. i keep it around 10-11w, up to 13-14w if i'm feeling sassy and/or drunk, down to like 8 when starting a new coil or w/e

also wow i fucked up mg and ml, and i am canadian too :/ its an embarrassing day to be me

it also seems to me like the coils last longer if (a) you use a less crazy juice (something clear seems good) and (b) you properly start the coil (let it soak for a while, and then start using it at the lowest voltage possible) and (c) you don't go too high with the v's in general

Bouncy Castlevania (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:40 (eight years ago) link

ah the one you recommended is one of those big box things! I already feel ridiculous and clunky as is!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:40 (eight years ago) link

it's not as big as it looks. i used to have that starter pack everyone has, when that thing bit the dust i got the istick + a nautilus mini. it's actually /shorter/ than the starter kit, the battery can be completely concealed in my hand, and the tank part is pretty low-profile... i should take a picture at lunch or something it explain this better

Bouncy Castlevania (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:42 (eight years ago) link

That would be awesome if you could. Though I just found this snazzy young man in his delightful choker and i think I'm getting the idea.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:44 (eight years ago) link

omg he's wearing the smaller starter one around his neck on a cord

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:45 (eight years ago) link

These can really be kinda discreet cause I'm so frustrated I'm actually considering it.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:48 (eight years ago) link

will's bang on here, especially about the coils - make sure you let them soak in the fluid for a while before using. don't avoid dark/thick fluids though, they're some of the best ones! istick and mini nautlius is what i recommend to everyone, it's pretty much the best you can get and at a decent price.

but yeah the aesthetic of the decent ecig batteries is pretty shit, that's just how it is at the moment. don't put up with a crappy model though just for that reason. they need to be big to have a decent (actual +/-) battery inside.

i've only ever had one battery that looked in any way good, I'll take a photo and upload later.

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:49 (eight years ago) link

i do occasionally use these things in public and not having something ostentatious/even visible is important to me so i had my doubts about this istick but it is really not big at all. looks like this.

Bouncy Castlevania (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:51 (eight years ago) link

It just seems so . . . vapey.

I know you're right tho and I'm so annoyed at this point that I might as well just do it. Shit I should probably just suck it up be out and proud and get the pink one so that I can bedazzle it and get some fancy ass coordinated drip tip to go with it.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:55 (eight years ago) link

I use a mvp2 + iclear 30 at home, but at work/when I'm out have a little stick one - kanger evod + aerotank mini. It feels less vapey & more portable. Felt like total clown with box mod and big tank, but it is much nicer.

I don't really understand voltage and wattage. Are they independent (I always think that one should affect the other - how come can I adjust them separately? nb I am useless at physics and electrics) and what effects do they have? My baseline is roughly voltage at double-the-coil-resistance but I play around a bit arbitrarily. Sometimes there's more kick when it's higher, but then I feel like something's about to burn.

I change my coil about every two weeks fwiw

woof, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:04 (eight years ago) link

I feel like I must be doing something wrong that my coils keep getting so fucked but I really don't think I am. I promise I'm not a moron. :/

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:12 (eight years ago) link

woof, voltage and wattage are related, but it all depends on the resistance (the ohms) of the coil. it's hard to explain without getting techy and boring, but i always ignore voltage and focus solely on wattage. 1.8ohm coil, 15w and below. 1ohm coil 20w (ish) and below, 0.5 ohm coil 30w and below, 0.3 ohm coil skys the limit, well, 100w approx.

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:49 (eight years ago) link

enbb, it is puzzling what's going wrong with your coils. it's not worth focusing on it though, just buy a new battery and the mini nautilus if you can and all your problems will disappear. as for feeling too embarrassed to walk round with one, i used to be like that but really just comes down to thinking: fuck it

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:51 (eight years ago) link

you're not gona get egged, worst is you'll get a cpl of snotty comments on the internet from sad dudes on the internet

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:52 (eight years ago) link

Thanks NI. So if my MVP2 maxes at about 11w then I can safely just stick it at the top end for a 2.1ohm coil? tbh I've saved so much with this already I might take your advice and switch again to istick/mini nautilus

In juice news, Digby's Dr Jekyll is the first that I've been repeat buying - nice on its own, & often mixes nicely when I have something else left over.

woof, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:05 (eight years ago) link

yeah 2.1 ohm at 11w is fine, i use my higher coils around that strength too. it's always worth pushing up one watt at a time and seeing where it tastes best, just before you get a hint of burning. have you tried sub ohm tanks at all yet? certain fluids taste so great at 30w.

next big item on your list should be trying out mixing your own fluids. super easy and will save you a fortune in the long run - it'll cost you about 1/10th of what you're paying now. if they do't sell the concentrate on its own a quick google usually comes up with the clone recipe:

Dr.Jekyll - Digby's
Absinthe (DV) 6%
French Vanilla (TPA) .3%
Peppermint (TPA) .8%
Sweetener (Sucralose) (TPA) 2 .3%

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:13 (eight years ago) link

this should help when it comes to working out what wattage to use with different strength coils:

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/20/uquhu2aq.jpg

says there that around 10w is the max for a 2.1ohm coil. i've gone to 11w on mine, but stick to 10w to be safe.

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:34 (eight years ago) link

shit, i have been running mine way too hot according to that chart

Bouncy Castlevania (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 18:35 (eight years ago) link

well not "way" too hot but 1-2 blocks into the bright red

Bouncy Castlevania (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 18:43 (eight years ago) link

I wouldn't worry, it's all about how it tastes to you. I go beyond those limits most the time and it tastes great. I think they're being cautious

NI, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 19:24 (eight years ago) link

just tried it way down and it does taste more like the thing it says on the bottle, so that's good i guess?

idk if i could ever get into the sub-ohm/juicemaking/cotton buying/etc game tho. at this point it's just low enough maintenance that i don't say "fuck it" and smoke instead. even then i cheat sometimes because the battery's dead or something.

Bouncy Castlevania (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 19:28 (eight years ago) link

weed has a psychotropic effect unrelated to addiction

not for everyone? for heavy long-term users, the psychotropic effect tells your body that it doesn't need to produce neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. for users who quit after years of heavy use, it can take awhile (6 months - 2 years) for your brain to start producing these chemicals naturally, in which case you feel depressed/anxious/irritable. sorry if i sound like some reddit bunghole, this is just standard boilerplate substance abuse/addiction stuff.

brimstead, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 19:32 (eight years ago) link

for sure, "withdrawal" generally used as shorthand for the symptoms of physical addiction when it comes to dependencies or addictions, it's not just "I withdrew the substance". didn't feel like going into that upthread

Upright Mammal (mh), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 20:03 (eight years ago) link

NI - great work on this thread in the face of, as you put it "snotty comments from sad dudes on the internet". You've really helped de-bunk a lot of stuff for me. I currently use liberty flights cartos with an e-go battery and their golden virginia liquid but quality is a bit hit and miss.

So to reiterate from upthread, your starter kit is istick 30, mini nautilus and what liquid?

Thanks!

the article don, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 20:30 (eight years ago) link

yes, the istick 30w (£30) and the mini nautilus (£20) will last you a long long time. perfect for a beginner but the option of 30w means you can test out sub ohm tanks and see if they're for you. best sub ohm tank is the kanger subtank (£25). i'd recommend you go to a shop to buy these and ask the shop guy to talk you through it all, but if you're feeling brave/thrifty order from amazon. if you're feeling braver/thriftier you can order from chinese site fasttech.com (only buy the ones labelled 'authentic', avoid the 'styled' for now) but you'll have to wait two or three weeks.

as for liquid, it all depends on your tastes and i'm uk-based so the most popular ones with my lot might not be available in america. if you can easily get hold of watermelon wave and gummi bear by pink spot, give them a go, almost everyone i know loves them. also try out lemonade/pink lemonade by whatever brand as that's usually a safe bet.

for the high end thick gloopy liquids (ie. high vg) to use in sub ohm tanks, try out mother's milk by suicide bunny - it's a creamy custardy thing, hint of strawberry - or milk & honey by cosmic fog. good inoffensive neutral-ish flavours. but this stuff is so dependent on personal preference your best bet is to go to an ecig shop and try out a few different flavours. ask which are most popular from each range. i can usually tell if i'll like it by smelling it.

it does bug me that people spend so much money on the fluids because i know how cheap they are to make. DIY stuff isn't for everyone, especially not if you're just a casual user, but it's v satisfying, plus if you flog it cheap to your mates everyone's a winner.

NI, Thursday, 9 July 2015 00:45 (eight years ago) link

should probably point out, pink spot and suicide bunny aren't especially well-liked or reputable companies, lot of hysterical ranting online about how their labs aren't that clean and the owners are liars and scoundrels etc. if any of that bothers you, best look elsewhere.

NI, Thursday, 9 July 2015 00:47 (eight years ago) link

Have both these and have been really underwhelmed. Hoping they're taste better once I do get one of these fancier models you all are talking about.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 9 July 2015 14:42 (eight years ago) link

i was gona say, those two kinda neutral-ish so a good starting point but my personal favourite from suicide bunny is madrina - a creamy melon flavour. managed to make my own slightly-improved version which i'm mad chuffed about.

but yeah, if i understand right you've been using mother's milk at 11w, enbb, and i can't imagine getting much out of it at that strength. the high-end stuff really comes into its own at 30w and upwards, loads of subtle tastes come out, rich thick vapour. it might not be your bag though so it's worth asking in a shop if you can test it out on one of their sub ohm tanks
