ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 05:58 (fifteen years ago) link

xp

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 05:58 (fifteen years ago) link

first time for everything, but the point remains, you are unwilling to give "new" boardgames a chance and that is SAD.

ian, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 05:59 (fifteen years ago) link

still so disappointed that motor city changed its pinball machine

settlers is almost 15 years old

blue and gold seems to be pretty board game friendly - i mean they have a hand painted monopoly board on one of their tables

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:35 (fifteen years ago) link

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:38 (fifteen years ago) link

brooklyn public house's food was very basic and kinda gross. nothing gastro pub about it.

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago) link

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link

of COURSE he does

so what if i have a friend in sci fi

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Althought elements of this expansion were available separately from 2004 to 2007, this pack did not release in English until 2008. It combines elements of fishing, events, expanded trading, barbarian attacks, camel trains, and much more to make a more well-rounded playing experience.

i don't have many favorite bars... it's like what's cheap and nearby kind of thing.

frank's lounge next to my house is cute because it's quaint

Surmounter, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i liked franks a lot the 1 time i was there but isnt it closed right now?

Shout out to the recent closing of Hi-Fi/Brownies.

Yerac, Friday, 5 January 2018 14:22 (six years ago) link

The old joke rings true about these places that are closing becoming either a Duane reade, a nail salon, or a bank

calstars, Friday, 5 January 2018 14:54 (six years ago) link

Recommend me a bar that has good low-key dance nights (as opposed to a club) and where you could conceivably start dancing earlier than midnight with a decent crowd there.

A scene in the Mrs Maisel show shows them walking into a bar with a giant sign on the window reading "Kettle of Fish" and I was never a regular at the Kettle but I don't think that was the Kettle.

i don't think i visited a bar on my own volition in 2017

I (sorta) regret to inform you that my bar HiFi will be closing at the end of this calendar month, ending my 23 year tenure at 169 Avenue A. All parties booked before the end of the month will happen as planned. The story? Quite simply, the renovations we undertook a few years ago to reinvigorate the business were not successful in putting us back on a good financial footing. The generation of people who inhabit this neighborhood on weekends remain mostly indifferent to the place. HiFi seems to occupy a place square in the middle between “dive bar” and “mixologist paradise” — and while I hoped that would help us have a broad appeal to the newbies, it turns out that it translated as utilitarian (aka boring) to their tastes.

Can someone familiar with the current state of NYC bardom explain to me what he's talking about? What kind of bar do the people who live in the Brownies/HiFi neighborhood (or "inhabit it on weekends" -- are those different people?) now want? What does it mean for a bar to be "utilitarian" and why is that bad?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 5 January 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link

I think he means they either want $13 cocktails or to be drinking with grandpas.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 5 January 2018 20:56 (six years ago) link

$30 cocktails

, Friday, 5 January 2018 21:16 (six years ago) link

I went to hi fi once in the past two years or so and despite the renovations(?) it still had the vibe of an old neighborhood place (which it was) and not really the kind of joint where 20 somethings would hang out given the multitude of options on Ave A, where there are more bars per block than almost anywhere else in manhattan.

It did have a really cool, intimate space for music in the back.

If you don't mind going to the Upper East Side, Ethyl's Alcohol is the bomb. Excellent retro-oriented dj's plus go go dancers. Actually has quite an old East Village vibe.

They were trying to portray the original location on MacDougal St. Now it's on Christopher St.

Josefa, Friday, 5 January 2018 22:02 (six years ago) link

for awhile, the Kettle of Fish was the old (second) Folk City.

I was looking to see if Subway Soul Club is still around, but they host it in Gowanus now.

White Horse tavern sold

Villagers have heard that “exactly as it is” pledge before about such historic places as the Waverly Inn and the Minetta Tavern, which were then turned into playpens for the rich and the vacuous. However, since the buildings contain 17 market-rate apartments it appears this deal is not so much to acquire a historic pub, but more a real estate transaction....

Author and radio host Malachy McCourt told me that he was prepared to lead a wake at the White Horse. When I asked him if he was serious he emailed me, “Yes I am serious about the gig. Peter Carlaftes of Three Rooms Press asked me to do it. He lives in the Village and is appalled at the destruction of the artistic life. So the answer is of course Yes! So Thursday, 21st March at 4 pm and only the God-guy knows what will happen, but let’s go for it!”

When workers removed the bar from the former Grassroots Tavern (1975-2017) on St. Mark's Place last week, they discovered these old murals. I have no idea how old they old. The landmarked building dates to 1832. [Photos by Derek Berg] pic.twitter.com/rEPN7Ej2Zc
