Last.fm

i have no idea why they have changed it. as you say, it's hideous.

I'm pretty bummed out about the Android app not working. I use my phone as my portable music player and virtually all my digital listening is done this way, and I really liked having it log all my songs because I use the gig recommendations RSS feed to notify me when bands I like are playing live. That's pretty much the main reason I even have a last.fm account.

Apart from the official app (which has always been shit, but at least it used to scrobble tracks), I've tried Simple last.fm Scrobbler, Scrobb, Last.fm for Android and none of the bastards work.

All I want from Last.FM is for it to log what I listen to over the weeks/months/years and to display this in list form. That's all. And the android app does not do this and never has.

The old Android app used to scrobble for me, certainly worked a lot better than the Itunes scrobbler which never worked from my ipod properly, used to randomly scrobble about 5% of songs I listened to.

Apart from scrobbling the old app was total shit though. The events list had the wrong dates on it! The further in the future the gig was, the more inaccurate the date would be. I dunno how they managed that, probably takes some effort to code something that badly.

also, my top artists list has never changed since 2011 when for about 6 months everything i listened to scrobbled approx 10 times per play.

So, I've just heard from a good friend of mine that uses this thing quite a lot that apparently they've just rolled out the new site today, but unfortunately it seems that last.fm have decided to not complete work on the site before rolling it out, so the general vibe is that last.fm have half-assed it. I'm hearing about disabled features all over the place, the site generally not working properly and things going missing, coupled with the fact that it doesn't seem like many folks are keen on the new layout to begin with.

I looked over to the last.fm website support forum out of curiosity, and as you'd expect there's plenty of whining.

It looks like some people have had duplicate scrobbles return that they got rid of ages ago, and private messages that they'd deleted returning to their inboxes etc.

From the sounds of it, they've wildly over-complicated the whole site. Personally, I thought it was at its best when it was the original Audioscrobbler.

xp I'm looking around now and I don't see any place that they've reversed artist & title (except when displayed as a stack, which I don't care about). The ticker at the bottom of the homepage still displays info in artist/title form.

limiting Recent Tracks and Top Tracks to 10 tracks is bad enough, but limiting Top Artists to just 5 is heinous

The homepage is full of this information that's being continuously refreshed and it looks like some kind of fake computer screen from a spy movie.

left my feedback on the site. hopefully there will be enough of a backlash that they make some changes. I'm cool with overhauling the site, but I'd really like the option to customize my lists the way I like them.

Yeah, that was a subscriber feature. I can't believe I used to pay to use that site at one point, but it was cool for a minute in the mid 00s.

tbf I made some friends on there that I'm still friends with 10 years later, even though none of us use it anymore. So thanks for that, lastfm.

that said, it suggested I would like "I Miss Your Bones" by Hospitality, and I do like it, so thanks last.fm. I always have found their recommendation engine better than most.

On the other hand, I asked it to play "bands like Hospitality" and it's now played "I Miss Your Bones" 4 times in a row, which is a bit much.

This is quite impressively botched, to the point where it's so bad I can't help but think the new company strategy is to lose some users, maybe there are too many putting strain on the servers at the moment so they've deliberately designed something so broken and awful that people won't want to use it? I just can't believe their developers had a meeting and said yeah this is good, well done good job everyone.

I actually can believe that. The native OSX client hasn't worked properly in forever at this point, it always crashes. Their forum has a ton of posts about it, but no one at last.fm has addressed it as far as I can see. I mean, having the ability to scrobble is their entire business model. Why wouldn't you fix that?

Getting rid of the neighbours/compatibility rating thing would be quite possibly one of the most stupid things last.fm could ever do, IMO.

Scores of useless and/or deleterious updates to the website and they still haven't combined the pages for Elvis Costello and Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Why would they? Those are two different things.

Like, fold The Ramones into Ramones, as is proper, but the Costello/Attractions split is justified.

Just looking at my profile. Apparently I listened to the album Days by Real Estate 41 times on June 11th and another 10 times on June 5th. I don't remember that happening.

Agree with everyone that it looks terrible and it seems really confusing.
