wasn't developed by stoners as far as i know

first time I saw a vaporizer was at least 15 years ago and it was a black box for smoking weed

so my confusion about this thread similar to marcos' basically

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:45 (eight years ago) link

yeah it's a shame that the public image of this stuff is all fat guys in porn t shirts blowing big mounds of smoke. determined not to let normal people be put off by all that

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link

I vaped weed before I vaped nicotine and I think that it's been a widely used stoner thing but I don't think it works by the same mechanism at all. I could be wrong there though. I just had a friend who had a week vaporizer and used it a couple times. I have no idea how it worked.

ha, i had one of those in the 90s. this is different though, involves heating cotton soaked in fluid containing nicotine & flavouring where as my one was just obliterating weed in a vacuum, like a full-on microwave. similar in the way it involves heat but a different mechanism. the exact process that took off was developed in china about 10 or so years ago, but there have been various similar ideas floating around for decades, none of them based around cannabis really.

this is worth a read, about the guy who invented the modern successful version:

Hon’s own moment of revelation came when he woke up one morning after a night full of bad dreams and realised he had been wearing his nicotine patch while he was sleeping. He came to think that the only satisfactory way to deliver nicotine alone in a relaxing fashion which might enable one to give up conventional cigarettes was through some form of smoking.

there's another ecig thread on here, but it went down a (not-uninteresting) rabbit-hole of the rights and wrongs of addiction. worth a read though

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:51 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I looked at reddit (I feel really deep down the rabbit hole) but they were all ohms this and coils that and wicks and builds and my eyes just kind of glazed over.

yeah, the learning curve for all that ohm, wick, coil stuff is v steep. took me a good while to get my head around it. im in the early stages of setting up a grandad style ecig guide site to counter all that, crazy how most stuff out there is either super advanced tech stuff, or dumb misinformation based around those disgusting disposable things. the middle ground shouldn't be as hard to get into as it currently is

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:56 (eight years ago) link

Woof - I'm pretty much exactly where you're at with all this in terms of interest etc. though I'm sure you know more. Looking forward to getting the MM. I have a couple of the cheaper ones and expecting a peach/mango and cinnamon one from vista this week. They make them all up once you order and your name is printed on them which is kind of neat.

the existence of 'gothic vash' depresses the shit out of me. more classic shots here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2324697/Meet-vapers-E-cigarette-craze-inspires-bizarre-new-sub-culture.html

although that article was the point where i thought, what is this thing? so three cheers for gothic vash and the daily mail, i guess

What's the difference between an ecigarette and a vaporizer and do users of the latter look down on the former?

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 18:00 (eight years ago) link

I feel like the answer to "Why is the marketing for this product so terrible" is found somewhere in head shops, High Times, and on-line poker websites.

What's the difference between an ecigarette and a vaporizer and do users of the latter look down on the former?

some people call the disposable ones that look like cigarettes 'ecigs' and the ones with separate parts (battery, tank, coil) 'vaporisers'. i call them all ecigs, dunno why, guess i hate the whole sci-fi bro from the future vibe around the word 'vaporiser'. the disposable ones are crap, taste like dust, just awful and have put tons of people off trying the better ones. from what i can tell, big tobacco are more involved in those ones. the tank/battery ones are the proper thing, taste great, can change strength, etc. although the dirt cheap versions of those are pretty bad too.

NI, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 18:14 (eight years ago) link

yeah i call it all ecigs. as do most ppl i know in the uk. i understand the political reasons people don't want to call it that.

tpp, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 19:58 (eight years ago) link

i tried the disposable ones first around 3 years ago and it was terrible and i went back to smoking for ages. january last year i decided to give it another go and went to the stoner shop here in zurich. the shops is full of bongs etc but they seem now to do most of their business selling ecigs. they were v helpful and recommended a tank/battery device. but annoyingly you can't actually buy the nicotine liquid here. i either order it from croatia or buy it when i'm back in the uk.

tpp, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 20:02 (eight years ago) link

enbb, I think we're almost exactly at the same stage, and I have been down the same rabbit holes, with the same repulsion/fascination with the aesthetics & community - I was tempted to go to the VAPE JAM UK expo to walk among the booths full of idealists/wide boys.

BTW for some madness of the scene in case you missed it, a vaping political party stood a couple of candidates in the UK general election - vapersinpower.co.uk (thank you Noodle Vague for finding that)

NI thank you for all that - so otm that the middle ground explanations are missing, like this:

in simple terms a sub ohm tank is a tank where the heating element gets really hot really quickly but without actually burning the cotton. it means your fluid is turned into vapour v fast so you get a big rush of smoke. the flavour is a lot more intense with these

Is the simple explanation that I'd wanted - forums, no matter how friendly (and they do seem to be), didn't really seem to manage it. I like tinkering with things - makes me more inclined to try.

the only thing that comes to mind when i see people with vape pens letting off these massive clouds of smoke is the candy/gum cigarettes i used to buy at the local five and dime that came loosely wrapped in a paper and swaddled in powdered sugar so that you could put them in your little kiddie mouth, exhale and let loose with a satisfying burst of cirrus saccharine

Guys with hilarious vaping pictures, you should maybe go to the fedora thread, where we all laugh at that shit. Guys who just want to hate on it, there's another ecig thread. This one was made for those of us who actually do it to share stuff. Admittedly there's little to stop you from sharing your views here, but just to give you a heads-up that there are other places for you to lol.

Where is the fedora thread? I will go there. I am interested in ohm science but also in hilarity.

ok that was harsh but I'm tired and cranky but, yeah, we all totally acknowledge the hilarity and anyone can post whatever but maybe not so many pictures in this one (even tho mick signals was amazing)? idk maybe that's silly.

Anyway the mother's milk is nice but i'm a little disappointed! Maybe it's because, as NI said, it's for people with more complex devices? For high-end liquid it's not really amazing or anything.

kinda true. never noticed it in my home but it's an issue in the car, a high vg/sub ohm tank definitely steams up the window inside. wouldn't call it oil, as it's nothing like the residue on the cooker hood after frying bacon but it does cloud up the glass.

i thought this when i first tried it too. just a basic cream taste, with a bit of strawberry but i dunno, i kept going back to it and after a week or so i was really into it, recognising different subtle flavours all the time, really liking the thick creamy sensation. it's not something i'd walk around chonging on all day, but as a late-night smoke it was great, like a dessert thing. can you tell me what battery you use, enbb? and if you know the strength of your atomiser/coil, just to get the gist of your set up.

NI, Thursday, 18 June 2015 13:13 (eight years ago) link

if anyone has any questions about any of this, from the mega basic to the kinda advanced, give me a shot. would be useful for building a list of articles.

NI, Thursday, 18 June 2015 13:14 (eight years ago) link

Is it the nicotine or is it something else in the vapor?

it's the VG in the fluid. vg is vegetable glycerol, a thick oil that gives off a lot of vapour, and that's the stuff that clings to glass. the other fluid used is PG, propylene glycol, a much thinner sharper fluid and that stuff doesn't leave much if any residue. if the residue thing bugs you just switch to a high PG fluid.

NI, Thursday, 18 June 2015 13:17 (eight years ago) link

what does the VG do to yr lungs?

, Thursday, 18 June 2015 13:18 (eight years ago) link

Uhhhh. This is all very technical! I have an ego-c and a EGO-II 2200mAh Battery. I have no idea about the coil. I've just been using the kind that comes with the kanger protank.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 18 June 2015 13:23 (eight years ago) link

all the tests so far have shown them to be safe, no impact. it's the same stuff used in smoke machines in clubs. the consensus is that VG gives off a thicker smoother blast of vapour, so it's more gentle on the throat. PG gives more of a sharp kick, so it feels more like smoking, and getting a nicotine hit. most people new to this stuff like the high PG because it feels like something is happening, like a toke on a cigarette. some people get irritated by the PG though, annoys the lining of the throat, so they prefer VG.

all the high-end fluids are high VG, as you can't really use high PG fluids in sub ohm tanks or at high temperatures - it hurts the throat at those temperatures.

NI, Thursday, 18 June 2015 13:29 (eight years ago) link

no worries, if you manage to find out let me know and i can recommend some tweaks. the strength of the coil is the key thing, have a look when you next unscrew it from the tank to replace it, it should say on the side. don't worry about this though but maybe hold onto half of your bottle of mother's milk til you get a set-up more suited to the high vg high-end fluids.

NI, Thursday, 18 June 2015 13:32 (eight years ago) link

OK, thank you but I'm cool where I am at the moment. Those complex things scare me! I like my discreet little setup. :) This morning I mixed some of the mother's milk with a 50/50 pg/vg liquid I have that is berry flavored to go w/ the strawberry in MM and I think it thinned it out a little and made it more suited to whatever strengths my coil is? Is that possible?

(also, you are very helpful!)

xxposts - PG is used in asthma inhalers and nebulizers and has never shown any negative effects.

yeah makes a lot of sense. i tried high VG fluids on my early set-ups and didn't get much from them - hints of flavour but felt v weak, and yeah, it's because the coil isn't strong enough to cut through the high vg. adding PG will help a bit but you're losing a bit of the quality by doing that.

im gonna guess you're on 1.8ohm coils, which is what i use 80% of the time, during the day etc. with that in mind, i'd recommend the pink spot fluids. they're made in vegas so should be cheaper and easier to find over there, rather than here in the UK. some great flavours in their range. gummi bear, fire & ice (cinnamon & menthol), watermelon wave, raspberry lemonade. really strong flavours, more intense than anything else i've tried. they're the ones i offer to smokers to plant the seed of 'something better is out there'

NI, Thursday, 18 June 2015 13:53 (eight years ago) link

i sound a bit salesy there but man, i properly love those flavours. such a step up from all the basic blueberry, menthol, tobacco etc ones from yr avg shop.
