I know next to nothing about Neutral Milk Hotel, but aren't they more of an albums band? Is this 'Two-Headed Boy' far and away their best song, like 'Super Going'?

I just don't see Cali Love as having that untouchable reputation of, say, "Regulate" or "Nuthin' But a G Thang". But it's possible, certainly.

No way on "Lazarus," Scott? Boo Radleys love is strong here, and I thought "Lazarus" was by some margin the consensus Boos song of choice. I could be wrong, but I think it at least has a chance.

I forgot "Regret" in my prediction, stupidly enough. It'll probably make it.

I might be wrong about the two D.I. songs, MiR, but if history has taught me one thing, it's to never underestimate the vote of the corny indie fuxx. And as such, "Two-Headed Boy" is a near lock (and yes, I think it's considered to be far and away their best song, and also was the only one nominated).

i really think that nothing compares 2 u will be in the top thirty, as well as black steel by tricky. laid by james is another possibility not yet mentioned.

The so-called "corny indie fuxx" silent majority vote usually manifests itself in sweeps for bigger names like Radiohead and Pavement, though. Not Disco Inferno.

everybody feels alienated, because its a poll. There shouldn't be somebody going OMG THIS IS ME ALL OF IT. Saint Etienne never meant shit to me ("Music Sounds Better With You" is hell) but I'm not gonna cringe about it.

Alba, is it that you don't know that track, don't think very highly of it, or what?

I know along with Digable Planets, Black Sheep and De La Soul, Tribe's "Scenario" was fairly responsible for my first "love" with 90s hiphop.
i would guess i'm not alone there, but who knows?

(To clarify, I've heard OF some of those songs, even if I haven't actually heard them. But I'm American and my 1990s went like this: top 40 (1990-93), alt-rock (93-96), indie-rock (96-99). So blind spots ahoy.)

anthony, I think people are more wary of conformity and hopeful that ILM will show up w/ a top 100 list that shows diversity of taste. I certainly don't want it to reflect my list (although I made mine in a hurry the night it was due and regret a lot of my choices...how did I forget "Come on Ride the train"?!?!) but I DO want it to show a more interesting take on the music of the 90s than say, Spin magazine + a bunch of anglophiles.

I was pretty sure that both Dubstar "Stars" and Portishead "All Mine" were going to make it. Now I realize it's not gonna happen. Why is "All Mine" not that popular?

I don't think "Scenario" is well-known ... but I certainly expect "Low End Theory" to make the albums list.

Rentboy - I'm very ignorant of 90s hiphop, but know of most of the other tracks mentioned as probably still to come. Not that one, though, so in my usefully clueless position, I was suggesting that there's no way it will make it.

(Miccio, "alienated" is a strong word, obv. It's more that it just makes me feel out of the loop -- and in a way that the 2000s polls didn't. But that's to be expected, because as my previous post suggests, my tastes this decade are a lot more catholic than they ever were in the 90s. Actually, in a way, it's kind of exciting, because now I look forward to hearing these songs I don't know!)

i thought people would be patting themselves on the back rather than complaining that they have more diverse tastes than the norm. Personally I'm happy as long as the list isn't filled with crap, whether or not it matches my own. And these songs have been consistently good.

I think that "Music Sounds Better With You" is like a 99/100 lock. I can't think of a more ILM friendly song than that one.

Good point about "No Diggity," Scott--that's definitely possible, though like Cali Love, I'm not certain it's a lock. "Got Your Money," like "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," has virtually no chance.

I didn't say (or mean to imply) that D.I. will get the CIF vote--just Neutral Milk Hotel. But they'll get it in spades.

"Black Steel" and "Laid" are very outside possibilities. "Laid" has virtually no chance, "Black Steel" I suppose could happen but is very unlikely.

"Lovefool" could actually be another sleeper.

I'm not an anglophile - I'm just British. I can't help it. ILM was started as a discussion board for a UK based website, so it's not surprising that even now there's a terrible imbalance in favour of us.

I'll say that so far this is a very cool list. And it might be the first list I've ever voted for where the majority of my top ten doesn't even make the list, I'm actually sort of excited about that. My tastes are usually so canonical.
