i didn't know where else to post a thread about my inability to like upbeat music that everyone else likes. well maybe not everybody

really this thread is more of a sad insight on how come I can't appreciate rock music, than it is a critique on people liking music I think is bad - even if it came off that way. i was sober when I wrote this thread but posted it in 'Ask A Drunk' because I knew my opinion wouldn't be received openheartedly on ILE. I really want to like lots of contemporary rock. But how do I ask people for suggestions when I'm bound to hate what they give me? I dunno...... I suppose this thread is rantlike and spam to most people. Sometimes I feel like I have to say what I'm thinking though, I won't try to explain why.

this is one of the very very few contemporary(ish) rock songs that I like. I don't like any other song in the style of this song btw. I wish I had more upbeat music for DJ mixes and shit though. I've always lacked rock songs, and Ive searched and searched and failed many times

oh great I just checked the biography of The Mice and realized that song was on a reissue of a cd from the mid 80s.
I always thought it was a new song. I fail at finding contemporary rock songs once again.

CaptainLorax, Monday, 30 March 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, I'll try to make a mix listing all the contemporary rock songs I like. I wish I liked more because some of these songs are sweet and I've already put most of these songs on mix cds ten times already.

1. Karate - With Age
2. The Walkmen - The Rat
3. Sleater-Kinney - Get Up
4. Metric - Hardwire
5. Nada Surf - Hi-Speed Soul
6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
7. Placebo - Special K (erm 2000)
8. Roisin Murphy - Sow Into You (not really rock though)
9. Thingy had an album in 2000
10. dude i'm stuck

it's pretty sad when you cant even name 10 songs from different bands past 2000s

CaptainLorax, Monday, 30 March 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago) link

geez "get up" was '99.
I CANT DO IT!

CaptainLorax, Monday, 30 March 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i was sober when I wrote this thread

Aha! There was your first mistake. A pity. Now we shall have to harry you back and retroactively inebriate you, which just plays holy hell on my whip hand. Incidentally, you are buying.

Barkeep! Set them up and keep them coming. Jamesons here. Put the water on the side. My friend here is paying.

Now maunder on about rock music all you wish, CL. (May I call you CL?) But have a drink first and wet your tongue a bit.

One time I printed out some 'rolling US economy' stuff for my grandma (liberal and active in politics - without a computer), including the blog from paul krugman and your talk about toxic assets etc.. I thought she might like something to read on the car ride home. You are particularly intelligent on that thread, aimless.

As far as contemporary rock music goes, I'm happy to say I missed a few good songs.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 02:00 (fifteen years ago) link

When you speak of contemporary rock music I plan to nod, and look primly wise and say little. You will then be forced to fill the silence. I can keep this up for as long as the Jamesons keeps coming.

Aimless, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 02:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Am I too late sit sit here and nod along with you, all the whilst slogging down free booze?

Good.

Have the barkeep set me up a waterglass FULL of 151 and a single ice cube in another glass, please.

I see an old friend over there and I want him to buy me a beer..... ummm I mean I want to say hello and inquire as to his Mothers health.

Nod away, Dude. The more the merrier. But when you go all glassy-eyed, blanch as white as an albino rat, and fall face first on the table, I intend to finish your drink. OK?

Me pass out?

I don't pass out!

Sometimes I may pause for an hour or three mid sentence or decide that my eyes need to close due to chronic dryness.

I might even go as far as to urinate on myself rather than relinquish my seat at the bar.

But pass out?!?!?

HAHRUMPHFFFFfffffff.......

(((((((psssssst! hey aimless,do I really look that pale?))))))))

Yeah, I cosign this. And I'm not even drunk.

Ask an emo

ambulance chaser (S-), Friday, 3 April 2009 01:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Sober emos are hereby requested to attend their own soiree, down the street, at the coffee house with the cat asleep in the window and the open mike night on Thursdays.

Drunken emos are requested to wipe their snotty noses on their own sleeves and leave my shoulder alone.

Aimless, Friday, 3 April 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I can be induced to pat them on the back and utter boilerplate malarkey if they buy me drinks, though.

Décidément, on ne sait plus faire les miroirs (Michael White), Friday, 3 April 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

So, drunken emo qualifies for the same treatment as a melancholy drunken Irishman, eh? Sounds similar enough, so I would guess that makes sense.
