Injury time winner for Mexico ruled out, a diabolical decision. Great to see the women's game attaining the same standards as the men's in one area at least.

this was an ideal opportunity to trial a video review system, not least because female players striving to attain higher standards is one thing, but referees being substandard is entirely another, and completely unacceptable

i went and saw china play netherlands this afternoon. great!
i saw canada and new zealand with heavy rain falling, lightning in the vicinity, game postponed. there was a lot of muttering in the stands at the end, "there's like... ten minutes overtime, then it goes to a shootout-- wait, it's over!?" booing everytime the referees did anything. mass confusion about why the goal was not allowed.
― dylannn, Friday, 12 June 2015 07:34 (eight years ago) link
didn't see that game so I dunno why the goal was disallowed, these first matches are in a mini-league so they won't go to penalties, that happens once you're into the knockout section
― Twee Speech and Crepey Literalism (Noodle Vague), Friday, 12 June 2015 10:22 (eight years ago) link
disallowed for offside, one of the rare occasions they've gotten an offside call right

I was in the stands for Germany/Norway and Thailand/Cd'I yesterday. Côte must have been cursed. I think they hit the post at least three times? Our section of the crowd was definitely favouring them. Lots of booing and muttering at how many Thai players were letting themselves be carried off on stretchers once Thailand had the lead.
― jmm, Friday, 12 June 2015 12:52 (eight years ago) link

A lot of what's going on in terms of officiating is just mystifying.
The ref blowing the whistle for full time in AUS-NGA at about 91:15 when the board had already gone up for four additional minutes? Ok, it was 2-0... if there'd been only one goal in it surely there'd be some kind of official protest.
With the games on so late and some of them only available on the BBC Sport app, I find myself falling asleep with my tablet next to me in bed, waking up not sure if I dreamt certain incidents. Very pleased to see that Jeon Gaeul's peach of a glancing header for KOR was actually real.

5-2 is a scoreline which resonates down the ages and is probably a reasonable summation of the game, in that it followed the pattern of every first-half bloodbath ever

Reasonable damage limitation effort from Japan, after beig 4 down in fifteen minutes, but Jesus, those fifteen minutes...
Can't understand how a team with that sort of experience, full of world cup winners and olympic finalists can possibly freeze like that. Wouldn't be too surprised if it comes out that there was some Ronaldo-in-1998 type clusterfuck prior to the game.

on sunday i went to a national women's soccer league game. it was really fun, plus much better quality than the majority of the world cup games that i caught on tv. Seattle Reign v Portland Thorns, so a derby game. world cup winner megan rapinoe plays for seattle, christine sinclair was up front for portland. $15 a ticket, so economical. a franchise record attendance of over 6000 were there. the crowd contrasted with most men's sporting events you'd go to in that it's mainly women, families, and there's lots of gay couples. nice change from the rowdy-hetero-bro vibe. 3-0 win for Seattle, i managed to miss the final 2 goals waiting to buy kettle-corn :/ but for sure would attend regularly if i lived in a city with a team, maybe they'll expand to vancouver one day.

I've been to a few Chicgo Red Stars games, otm as far as crowd composition, but less ppl overall at their games. Christen Press is a great player, and Julie Johnson in defense is like retroactively awesome bc the games I went to were all pre World Cup.
