goddamn, this hit the ground running

i like that it did not give a single solitary fuck that our biggest concern was who was alive in the aftermath of the dinner party; let's just get caught up with Hannibal and his gal in paris

is it? really?

j., Friday, 5 June 2015 15:16 (eight years ago) link

well it sure as hell was for me! They potentially murdered 75% of the cast in the cliffhanger for last season and we're not gonna check in with them even once?

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:17 (eight years ago) link

you americans, always rushing everything, never savoring

j., Friday, 5 June 2015 15:19 (eight years ago) link

Again, I'm saying I appreciated their willingness to cut against the grain of that sentiment.

I felt like there was a pretty slow pace to about half the episode. As far as the overarching plot goes, sure, we're in media res

I am not sure about the Eddie Izzard inner dinner party debate sequences. It's an interesting way to illustrate what Hannibal asked Bedelia about her anticipation of others' emotions and actions, but I hope it's not ongoing. Not that it could be, as he was about spent as far as limbs go.

Bonsoir

i think it was to emphasize how much hannibal craves an audience

dellevadova depression beard (slothroprhymes), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:31 (eight years ago) link

The casting of someone recognizable as the patient Hannibal sent to Bedelia to bait them into a murderous situation seems to indicate we might see more flashbacks to her grooming

ultimate american sock (mh), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:31 (eight years ago) link

great episode tho, hallucinatory/non-chronological vibe was really effective - as was the switching between 1.85 and full widescreen for present vs. past respectively

dellevadova depression beard (slothroprhymes), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:32 (eight years ago) link

The look on Anderson's face when she's told her diet is what Romans fed animals to make them tastier, well...

When in Rome...

ultimate american sock (mh), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:32 (eight years ago) link

i thought the izzard sequences are meant to suggest that hannibal could very well be preparing bedelia for eating and that she's acutely aware of that possibility but is trapped in a self-destructive cycle that he's constructed for her
have we ever seen hannibal engage in sexual activity? he seems to full of himself to allow it. it occurred to me that the sound of mads and gillian fucking would be that of a cello being bowed by a leather gloved hand.

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:44 (eight years ago) link

they were pretty clear he was in a sexual relationship with Alana Bloom

ultimate american sock (mh), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:51 (eight years ago) link

yeah, but only as a manipulation? i guess i'm asking if this guy has sex for pleasure and the answer is likely obviously no; the pointed turning away at bedelia's bath felt meaningful... "it's definitely not that kind of party"

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:53 (eight years ago) link

yeah remember the dream-space five way w/ alana hannibal will margot verger and...the antler demon? lol

dellevadova depression beard (slothroprhymes), Friday, 5 June 2015 15:54 (eight years ago) link

i think he's capable of experience sexual pleasure but it prob is not something he thinks about much or prioritizes though so i m/l agree w you forks

SLIGHT SPOILER w/r/t a character who hasnt been seen yet - only in that there's an image of them that iirc was in the trailers, but just figured i'd attach the warning

and how much he wants that audience to be Will. Bedelia's a distraction and she knows it. (In Bryan Fuller-speak, Hannibal wants his murder husband, not murder wife.)

I did like how Eddie Izzard had one less limb every time they cut to a new flashback/hallucination scene.

Roz, Friday, 5 June 2015 21:44 (eight years ago) link

Wasn't it implied before that Hannibal was the one who killed Zach Quinto's character? And that at some point, he made Bedelia believe that she was the one who did it, in the same way he made Will think he killed Abigail?

Roz, Friday, 5 June 2015 21:45 (eight years ago) link

yes.

Ohhhhhh I had missed that.

I feel like I need to rewatch previous seasons but I don't know if I can handle it.

i would love to rewatch this whole thing sometime soon. maybe when it wraps.
no word on a season four yet right?

the florence shots are scrumptious

Mordy, Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:14 (eight years ago) link

snails on the hand was maybe the most beautifully nauseating thing I have seen

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:29 (eight years ago) link

i like that the show's aesthetics are similarly nihilistic or amoral as hannibal's - treating blood, death, snails feasting on hands w/ the same lavish attention as champagne, the duomo, a faucet. and those totems that blur the lines - the dante illustrations, the museum-displayed torture items, the upside down rabbit in the meat shop

Mordy, Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:35 (eight years ago) link

oh man that lucifer slide over hannibal's face
no other show on television is as well filmed, no other show is even close

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:45 (eight years ago) link

omg yes the rabbit

so much of the show's aesthetic to food & flesh reminds me of the 17th (?) century Vanitas paintings, skulls and rotting fruit in lush detail

The graphicness of the cooking is a turn off to me. I wish they could manage some subtlety.

calstars, Saturday, 6 June 2015 18:19 (eight years ago) link

O_o. no wai that's the best part! imo

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 6 June 2015 20:52 (eight years ago) link

Yeah big fan of that stuff personally

Spottie, Saturday, 6 June 2015 21:25 (eight years ago) link

LOL subtlety.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Sunday, 7 June 2015 01:50 (eight years ago) link

not sure if the hide-and-seek scene was necessary but it provided some good dramatic tension

I will be downloading a copy of this episode this weekend due to the fact we had storms in my area and the local television station helpfully had the storm alert banner at the bottom of the screen for the ENTIRE EPISODE

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 12 June 2015 14:00 (eight years ago) link

is it just me or was that episode even more gruesome than usual? so much squick

also replaying the scenes from last season's finale is some kind of sadistic storytelling

Roz, Friday, 12 June 2015 22:08 (eight years ago) link

I wanted to believe in living Abigail

I felt something was up when Will woke up in hospital. Hospital rooms don't look like that!!

I missed this because I had some kind of 24 hr stomach bug and there was just no way.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Saturday, 13 June 2015 00:52 (eight years ago) link

wise choice there, this episode was pretty much nightmare fuel from start to finish

lol tbf there are never any rooms in Hannibal that look like regular places.

Thought it was weird that the priest looked at Abigail in the church. Though maybe he was looking at Will?

Roz, Saturday, 13 June 2015 01:05 (eight years ago) link

I think he was looking at will talking to himself

the heart-leg-cronenbergian thing: aaaaaaaaauuugggghhhhh

slothroprhymes, Saturday, 13 June 2015 12:39 (eight years ago) link

The priest was looking at Abigail and she was looking back. The brief allusion to Don Giovanni at the end of the episode, the constant talk of God and other worlds, makes it clear that Abigail was really there, but (and this is a wild oversimplification) as an angel or ghost. They seek vengeance, ya know.
