For what it's worth, the songs are not connected to the players, unless I hit upon something accidentally. They were matched according to length of song/album title and how much available space there was--Yo La Tengo sometimes have very long album titles. Every card is from the '70s.

I didn't even think to match Dock Ellis with "Sugarcube."

Madeline (And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out)

I personal favorite of mine. I grew up with the Madeline books. Listening to the song, I always picture her as a grown up.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 20:47 (eight years ago) link

JR Richard was one of my favorite players growing up.
Madeline however did not make my final ballot.

"Madeline" in my top ten. So casual that it almost drifts away. I love the organ and lead guitar line.

Wow, four already that I've voted for including my number 3 ("Ohm").

I love Center of Gravity, such a nice little interlude in I Can Hear...

tears are in your eyes is a lovely song. i always think of atntiio as an album about depression, particularly struggling with it with someone else that you love, and tears are in your eyes kind of marks the lowest point of the sadness and the beginnings of recovery.

Upside-down was pretty high on my ballot. I need to listen to May I Sing With Me some more but that's the one that's always really stuck out to me.

voted False Alarm, even better than Al Hrabosky

Aight. This is it for today. Already a classic collections of songs imo.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 21:59 (eight years ago) link

"Upside-Down" is one of the most perfect 3-minute rock songs ever, imo. No fadeout, they really stick the landing.

WilliamC, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 22:00 (eight years ago) link

Rock version for the win!

campreverb, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 22:02 (eight years ago) link

I can't even remember "Today Is the Day." I wish I didn't, but I see the title and think of the Smashing Pumpkins.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 22:09 (eight years ago) link

"False Alarm" too low.

During my one listen to Summer Sun, a non-YLT-fan friend of mine asked why I was so disappointed by it. I immediately put on "False Alarm" saying, "Because they used to be this good!" He understood immediately.

Speaking of YLT and covers, Luna should totally cover Damage. It's lyrical themes and construction are so similar to Dean's.

i was going to get really excited as VHS is a huge Giants fan (just like me) but then i realized that it's clemenza's images. so are we going to get a bunch of Blue Jay images?

Bee OK, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 05:11 (eight years ago) link

so far it's been as diverse as the YLT catalog

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 05:24 (eight years ago) link

No Blue Jays. After the initial excitement of getting the franchise and maybe the first few weeks, I barely paid attention to the Blue Jays in the '70s. They were pretty terrible. I was much more caught up in all the drama of the Yankees at the time.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 12:13 (eight years ago) link

VHS, you are aware that this is a Mets band?

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 15:52 (eight years ago) link

i only voted for 5 albums, but i'm still surprised that Popular Songs was last. I think only one cut from that record made my top 25 (Periodically Double or Triple), but I've been returning to it recently and find it solid. Guess I'm the only one?
