So my iMac internal HD melted down (ironically, I am posting using the Boot Camp partition which was very small and hence not as affected by the hardware fuxors as of yet) and deeply regretting not having bought an external HD earlier, which I guess I will do... now. eman, how did that drive work out?

I'm looking get a Firewire 400/800 1tb. Kind of tempted to get this one by WD for http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=74&threadid=6664050 but maybe I shouldn't cheap out on this? Would it really make a huge difference in quality to get a different model for $200-ish? My original plan was to get an OWC enclosure and a decent internal drive, but I don't have as much time right now to go shopping, though together those would cost about $180.

I don't know though, whatever money is left is gonna go to the Apple Store in a couple days... I'm way too afraid to open this thing myself, and I might be forced to replace/upgrade the internal anyway.

the simpletech 1TB i got worked out great. i think you're right about the 1.5's not being quite there yet. only a few bux more than the western digital :B (see my first post about the issues with the wd mybook). i also made sure to get the firewire 400/800

oops, should read:

eman, does your 1TB have a separate power supply, or is it FW-powered?

one year passes...

i have a macbook from 2006 (i replaced the hd in 2007 because it died) and i need an external hd. every day i think about how stupid i am just having one internal hd, especially since i have experienced that catastrophe already. what is a quality affordable 1 TB hard drive in 2010?

G-Drive.

why so much variation in price between brands? also learning customer reviews are useless; everyone is unhappy with everything. i just wanna buy something.

There are NO good hard drives, but essentially you get what you pay for. I have 6 drives - 4 of them are G-Drives and three of those are the only drives that have never failed.

Buy a G-Drive if you want an external HD

thanks adam, i think i'll get a g-drive

alternatively you could get two Western Digital HDs for almost the same price, if you're paranoid enough to do a double backup

I have one of those and it pretty much stopped being reliable after the first fortnight.

Those Big Box Chain Store hard drives suck, don't they? I am embarrassed to own one.

OWC has external drives that are sort of bulky and ugly, but do not suck

Just bought another 2TB from them yesterday. I have several and they most definitely do not suck.
