I will be visiting with my sister in June. Any recs for hotels, bars, record stores, etc?

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 16 April 2016 19:43 (eight years ago) link

Looks like most of the record shops I knew are gone now. Tower is now in the old Waterstones premises and above Easons on O'Connell st.
There's still a record shop in George's St arcade.
I don't remember seeing any of the others still around. Except HMV on Henry St. Had been 5 years gap before my last visit a couple months back though. So maybe there are new places I don't know about?

I, a 35 year old married man in a decent state of career, am now looking into the option of us renting a room in a share in order to actually save money for a deposit while also managing to live in Dublin

I realise this will not be news to new yorkers or Londoners but lookit we're only little old Ireland lads hasn't this all gotten a bit #notions

brat_stuntin (darraghmac), Friday, 10 March 2017 12:03 (seven years ago) link

Oof sorry to hear that, deems. Cork is getting ridiculous regarding rent/accom too

Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Friday, 10 March 2017 12:37 (seven years ago) link

I was in Dublin for a few days last summer and thought it seemed even a bit pricier than London.

chap, Friday, 10 March 2017 12:40 (seven years ago) link

I'd happily stay miles away from the buying option tbh but the way renting is gone.....eesh

brat_stuntin (darraghmac), Friday, 10 March 2017 12:42 (seven years ago) link

If you would like to commute in from Offaly I can sort you out with a decent 'buy two houses, get one free' deal.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 10 March 2017 12:47 (seven years ago) link

Ah, sorry to hear that, man - I know the prices fell off a ridiculous high in early 2006 (as the fear of going home and buying is what kept me over here) - it looks like they hit the bottom in 2012 from a minute's Googling, is it back to the mad old times?

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 10 March 2017 13:17 (seven years ago) link

Rent wise certainly, the buying market actually appears to be slowing very slightly as a result of the lending strictions.

We'll survive. In tallaght.

brat_stuntin (darraghmac), Friday, 10 March 2017 13:37 (seven years ago) link

Dammit tho it's a great town to live in tbf.

You'll have the decency not to mention I said any such thing obv

brat_stuntin (darraghmac), Friday, 10 March 2017 13:54 (seven years ago) link

Damnit D, that sucks. (I loved your house, it's prob twice as big as mine too!)

Three things to note

Property soars but it's rents that are in actual full-blown crisis, the IT serving some use here for a change in this week's focus

Mentioning that august publication, item two is it's execrable opinion piece today on how awful Dubliners are. Absolutely rotten writing and none of the searing wit evident in our own little stramash some years back on the topic

Third, we ended up north of Stoneybatter in a lovely one bed, thanks for askin

i will be in your city, Friday to Monday next weekend, though only really Friday is free, as I am joining friends for the Leinster match on Saturday, and will be staying just outside Dublin/Sunday lunching after that.

Let me know a thing that is good to do that isn't doing the things that everywhere on the internet says is good to do.

what

drinking in a pub?

i mean thats a hell of an option to eschew all things considered

puppy bash (darraghmac), Friday, 7 December 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link

i was in fact thinking of drinking in a pub mainly.

Fizzles, Friday, 7 December 2018 15:58 (five years ago) link

but have a filthy and i suspect protestant legacy of needing to look at some statuary or engaging in some v mildly strenuous cultural activity before i feel i deserve it.

also, you know, pub recommendations. tho my limited experience was that the general standard in ireland is much higher than in england.

Fizzles, Friday, 7 December 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link

national gallery is convenient to manys the good pub and rather plushly newly-built/furbished

i propose something along those sketchy lines

puppy bash (darraghmac), Friday, 7 December 2018 16:43 (five years ago) link

The Hugh Lane is a nice little gallery and houses Francis Bacon's relocated studio in a sort of weird artquarium. It's at the top of O'Connell street, so not that convenient to many good pubs

Number None, Friday, 7 December 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

I mean you can also just walk around Dublin randomly all day — it’s great and will warrant many pints

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 7 December 2018 16:56 (five years ago) link

Thanks NN – it's going in the notebook. and yes I suspect there will be random wandering. both before and after the pub. when the wandering will be more random.

and of course, anyone who fancies a pint shd apply below. I know my way to the bar and am able to converse superficially and with an air of entirely spurious certainty on a number of topics.
