2) What is rockism? It is the idea, from Britian, that suggest what rock music should be. Anything from the instruments, which include bass, guitar, and drums to how the singer acts. It's against videos because they take away from the feel of the real thing. It is also against pop music and the lip syncing that comes with it. Rockism is about the artist and their own writings. It's about the feeling you can get from that band and only that band. Rockism really came about with the 80's rock bands. However it's still in effect and greatly followed.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? I would have to say I think Sufjan Stevens is better. Deerhoof is a little too experimental for me. However her voice is really nice, and goes well with the music. Sufjan is just really laid back music and relaxing. Something that I just sit and listen and daze off to. I think one of the reasons I'm more into Sufjan is because he reminds me of one of my favorite bands Iron and Wine. Just easy listening with good lyrics, always wins me over.

What is rockism? Rockism is a special way of criticism for pop music. Rockism mostly forgo the use of technology. So rockism express
the auteurs values. So it is the opposite of manafacture popular music . But rockism is purely a way of selfexpression thru the music. The rockism ideology relates to the most authentic and pure music which was created mostly in the 60s & 70s. So rockism describes pure music which hasnt the attend to be commercial or sth like that. But in the endeffect rockism means that the music must fit for you and that is what counts.

4)In my opinion Deerhoof makes music that is more interesting to me. Deerhoof's odd little girl style vocals just give the music such a unique feel. Deerhoof is also known to create some very unique sounds with the guitar that I may hear other places, but they never seem to be executed so well. The drums on Deerhoof's albums also never cease to be nothing short of syncopated genius. Sufjan uses a lot of nice varied instrumentation but something about the music just doesn't grasp me, like I feel that it needs to in order for me to appreciate it more than Deerhoof. The voice to me is a big problem. I feel like I have heard it so many times before, although the context in which it is used is very different. They are both great but Deerhoof is to unique and too well constructed for me to ignore.

2) Rockism is a filthy plague. Rockism is the terror that flaps in the night. Rockism is to music as herpes is to 18-35 gentlemen in urban areas. Rockism hates 808s almost as much as I hate rockism. Rockism is a boiling pot of cranberries. Rockism is 12% less fun than The Karate Kid 2 as decided by a panel of forty-two year old self-proclaimed "modernists." 4) Deerhoof is better than Sufjan Stevens. First of all, numbers don't lie: Deerhoof has more boobs, 2-1. Secondively, in a fight, three nerds and karate usually beat one nerd. Also, Deerhoof has not promised to make fifty albums I don't care about, earning them a point. To the SS's credit, he has a song about Gacy to his name, but it's not enough to save him. I have never made it through an SS album without getting bored about 7 minutes in. I bet bananas in your armpits hurts more than feeling any sort of noise, let alone the Illinoise variety. Can you tell I'm running out of ideas for new sentences? Because I am. That's why Sufjan kneels at the altar of the Hoof.

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

Rockism, by the standard definition, is a belief or view that rock music is the standard and everything else is based around it. Usually situated around basic instruments, lead and rhythm guitars, bass guitar, and drums, it will usually flow in a standard rock and roll song structure (verse, chorus, bridge, chorus).

Rockism, to me though, is all about rocking out to the sounds of the beast that is rock! Throw in your favorite Iron Mainden album and you’ll know what I mean. It will lift you up when you’re down, and it will keep you flying high when you’re feeling excellent. It’s the feeling you get when you’re rockin’ you’re electric guitar (or playing GuitarHero). It’s my morning wake up call and my evening good-night. Rockism is what I will find on my quest for the answer to life on the top of a tall mountain instead of an old man with long grey hair. Rockism is the spice of life running through our veins.

4)Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

In my opinion, Sufjan Stevens is better then Deerhoof. For one, I find that Satomi Matsuzak sounds too high and “child-like” for my liking. Sufjan Stevens on the other hand is a signer/songwriter, which means he’s doing twice as much as some other music people do. Although some of his songs contain Christian messages, which I tend to stay away from, I still find it more of a listening pleasure then Deerhoof. Sufjan Stevens’s conceptual idea of 50 albums for 50 states is a great one. If completed, there would be many more Sufjan Stevens albums then Deerhoof albums, which means more songs to listen to. That’s a good thing because everyone knows more is better, especially when it comes to a music collection. If I had to put money down on it, I would throw down $100 on Sufjan Stevens for the win, or possibly just to place. Either way, it would be a better outcome then Deefhoofs.

2) Rockism is the critical belief that rock music is better than other forms of popular music. Inherently better, that is, than say synthetically produced music because of the use of standard rock instruments like electric guitar, drums and electric bass. electro and hip hop is cool, but music performed with standard rock 'n roll instrumentation, for lack of a better word, rocks! for this reason, i'm a fan of post-rock -- intrumental atypical rock'n'roll music played with rock'n'roll instrumentation (ie: explosions in the sky rawk!). another example would be the hip-hop group The Roots. they rock more than chingy because they lay their grooves down with rock'n'roll instruments. damn, it's hard to write eight sentences like about this.

4) while Deerhoof's experimental music is cool, i have to side with Sufjan on this one. first of all, he's written christian music that doesn't suck; he expresses his faith without trying to evangelize. second, he likes the fifty states of america. third, he managed to write a song about the serial killer john wayne gacy that isn't super creepy. fourth, he has possibly the hottest women in indie rock playing the glockenspiel in his band: katrina kerns (http://www.badmintonstamps.com/images/katrina.bmp and http://www.zachklein.com/2005/08/ladies-and-gentlemen-sufjan-stevens.html). fifth, the dude can flat out sing. sixth, the dude can flat out write a song. seventh, his name is soof-yan... that's right, soof-yan. how can bambi's foot compare to that list?

2)Rockism is a post modern term used to describe a way in which some people critically analyze music. It originated in the 80's after the so called "golden age of rock". It is usually used to describe an idealistic or perhaps romantic notion of what rock music should be in it's purest form. It's holding a particular piece as the ultimate pinnacle of what that genre should aspire to be and then comparing any aspect of it's structure and make up with something else, usually a more modern piece thats currently in the charts. It doesn't really matter how different it is in style or even genre because it's being held against a particular set of cardinal standards determined by the critic. Sometimes it's used in a slightly less broad sense to describe music that was 'meaningful', 'written with a timeless quality' or 'made to last through the ages.' It isn't always used to describe the music and band themselves but also the entire culture that surrounds it including fashion, politics and beliefs. Some would see it as an obnoxious or snobbish way of reviewing music, perhaps destined to wear out as music branches further away from what the popular idea of good rock music is. Wow, I sounded like a bit of an arse reading all that back. Oh well. :)

3) http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a30/mexillent/catpower_full.jpg

4) This ones going to be harder. I've only ever ever heard one album by each artist and it's tough to beat 'Illious' by any stretch. Personally from what i've heard i'd say Surjan Stevens is the more likable artist. It's perhaps unjust to call him "better", but I think he's more accessible. Deerhoof's music is more experimental and un-predictable from what i've listened to. I liked his style but I didn't think it was as brilliant as Illinos, which is probably a masterpiece. Steven's music has an honesty and a feeling like your listening to something really well crafted. His music's quirky oddness feels more natural than Deerhoof's.
I think both artists require more than one listen to fully appreciate. Maybe sometime i'll give Deerhoof another go.

2) Rockism is the use of only bass, guitar and drums and the non-use of electronics in music. I think this is bullshit, if we're ever going to move forward in rock music we need to bring new sounds and new instruments to the game. If you take away the power to progress, rock is going to die. Under "rockism", most of the music you and I love, wouldn't have happened. While I agree that music is over produced today, it doesn't mean we have to go back to reel to reel. Think of a world without New Order. That's a world I don't want to live in.

3) http://www.bls-act.co.jp/images/db/cat_power.jpg

4) Deerhoof is the better band. Mr. Stevens rehashes old folk song styles and a tired sound. Deerhoof is one of those band that progresses, you pick up a Deerhoof album and it might take a while for you to get into it. But, once you do, you're loving it. Sufjan, I don't see anything special in his music. Deerhoof is a band that has a unique sound for our generation, people will look back in 20 years and see Deerhoof albums as generation landmarks. While Stevens album "Illinois" is not a bad album by any means. It's just forgettable.

2) Well, I'm going to be honest, and say that I've never heard of it before now. Therefore, I'm not going to lie and pretend that I know about it. At first, I think that it sounds like some kind of genre of music, but after reading a few other replies, I realize I'm quickly wrong. Apparently, it is basically talking about elitism in rock music, and we all know how much people love that. What do I think about elitism and saying that all rock music will never be as good as the classics? The fact that people who say that need to listen to more different types of music and appreciate the fact that bands play whatever they want. They could be playing mainstream rap and talking about sex and whores and drugs and pimps and how "gangster" they are, but instead they chose to plug in a guitar and play. Why cannot everyone just accept rock as rock and stop comparing stuff all the time? The fact that some people are even trying to make rock music is good enough, and they could do without being insulted for never being as good as the "classics". Well I guess within that period of time I just learned what Rockism is....

I'm also afraid that if I go up and actually do what I should've done from the beginning (go to wikipedia), that I will find out who these people actually are, and I'll be more ashamed than I already am as of right now. As it's going, in comparison to how I was before I entered this page, I know I'm not getting the invite, and I'm just having fun now because I'm bored. I take it they are probably both good and both have strong and negative artistic qualities. omg I think that's eight sentences....and after counting it just _looks_ that way! : D

Copy and paste wikidpedia definition here. Fuck that, here's what "rockism" means to me. When asked the question, what is rockism one must take many criteria into mind. Actually that's complete bullshit, it all leads down to the fact that opinions are like assholes, mine's just better than yours. This parallels into the music world, where simply some music is better than other. Unfortunately, the world is not quite ready for this as some music out there is complete shit and unfortunately has developed a massive following due to the fact that the majority of the population has become musically impotent. Music is either good, or bad.

Sufjan Stevens. You know how some things are just better than others? Well, this is one of those situations. Sure some wanna be pretentious indie hipster trolling the internet, I mean local record store might come across Deerhoof on myspace, cough, I mean "vinyl" and think Deerhoofs the best thing since shitty starbucks coffee, but I've never really gone along with what those types have to say. I mean Sufjan sure is a hell of a lot more motivated. Any man who wants to try and capture all 50 states in a collection of 50 cds obviously has some drive. Illinois was one hell of a download, cough, I mean album. Deerhoof might be one of those bands that sounds better while one's head is emerged in water, has consumed large amounts of mind altering chemicals, or otherwise. Point remains, Sufjan Stevens is just better.

2) I think that rockism is a bit of a loaded word, depending on your musical taste. Generally, it is the ideal that gross sales don't justify liking a particular song or band, but that a band should be judged by the "truth" in their music. When this term gained popularity it was closely associated to 1970s-80s classic rock, and therefore associated simply with music that consisted of guitar, bass, drums (and being grossly appalled at anything produced synthetically. However, the real meaning behind it has really been transposed into other genres of music since this meaning follows with the general nature of people. This being the typical "sell out" comments or the satisfaction one gets from saying "that band was good, before they got popular". This is the general attitude of many people, and they will often not listen to a band because they are popular. This attitude is present across genres, whether it be rap, emo, alt rock, you name it. I do believe that some bands simply ride their initial popularity, and i think that the term rockism discriminates against them, as it should. However, it should also be important to realize that each person should listen to the music first and decide for themselves whether they like it or not.

3) http://img.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/060120/1203__cat_l.jpg

4) I don't think anyone can win an argument saying either is better. I particularly enjoy Stevens better. I admire how they both pursued the same ideals in their music. Yet they both pursue this in different ways and with a different understanding of music to begin with. Sufjan was introduced to music in a very formal way, and i think that his music shows this clearly. Even though he is pushing for innovation in music through his songs, it still has a structured feel. Deerhoof on the other hand, seems to have a raw unfinished nature about it. Their music is a lot more focused on the clashes between the different elements in their music. I think this differs from Stevens' music in that his seems to focus on having smooth transitions between elements in songs.

It's a term invented by the critics for the sake of criticism. It's difficult to speak about authenticity when you have billions of sound variations using the same technology. Lets take an hypothetical artist that is sincerely expressing himself through the music he creates. He should be authentic. But given the fact that that artist has a musical culture that is based on the expressions of other artists, he won't be authentic. So his work could easily get bad critique. Which sucks, but his listeners don't think about that, they go with his flow. Or not. Narf!

I was curious as to what Wikipedia offered on the definition of rockism, so I looked it up, and I strongly disagree with the one they offered. According to their definition, the existence of the phrase itself is a paradox. I believe that rockism doesn't necessarily have to conform to the standards of being "rock'n'roll" or even "authentic". I mean, all the genres of music had to start with some basic form of music, then evolved into what they are now, right? You can play funk in an electronic band, and as long is you get the audience to shake their bodies or nod their heads, I believe that you have achieved a certain authenticity. Of course, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.

Before Deerhoof came up with Reveille, Sufjan Stevens. After Reveille, Deerhoof, for sure. I don't know, just a matter of taste, I guess. If I were in my teens but in this day and age, I would probably go with Deerhoof 100%. Besides I have a thing for bands with crazy Japanese lead singers. Apple O' just sealed the deal for me since the transformation of the band became really sonically visible. Of course it started from Reveille, but Apple O' for me showed the maturity of the soundscape they were able to produce. Sufjan Stevens, to me at least, sounds like he just recycles his style (with a little bit of spunk here and there) each album.

Rockism is a pseudo-intellectual term invented during a simpler time but currently likely employed by people who are either self conscious or untalented. Of course music made by corporate suits is distasteful to an individualist but the term does not pertain to a digital age where the tenants of music production are rapidly degrading. Just as post-modern makes no sense in a post-post-modern world "Rockism" has likewise lost its necessity. For these reasons those who subscribe to this term literally or figuratively are suspect in their intentions and most likely feigning music literacy. In conclusion, rockism is a pseudo-intellectual term likely employed by people who are either self conscious or untalented.

Well the short and uncreative answer is neither. However I can only guess that you want my opinon and I will have to safely say that it depends on the day for me, even the hour. I am graduate student in biochemistry and wear wireless headphones while I work in a laboratory. Therefore I would say that Sufjan Stevens is more suited to small detail work such as setting up reactions. Conversely Deerhoof is a little higher energy and is "better" for higher energy activites like washing glassware.

Most white critics 90's grew up immersed in rock, rockism is an approach to music that uses the values of one genre as an unquestioned set of rules and then judges other music by those values. The normative genre has historically been rock. The concept of rockism is truly unique to music; the idea of a critical discourse warped by the values of one genre. While rockism continues to define metal and fuels many of the new male country singers, two of its bulwarks these days are rap, hip hop and the former subculture still sometimes labeled alternative

Sufjan Stevens, He is known for his lyrically focused and instrumentally songs in genres mostly on Folk, Indie rock, Experimental. His songs are on the soothing side where it brings calm and sensual on ones ears. Deerhoof, was formed in 1994. They are known in genres on Pop Rock music, Noise Rock, Alternative Rock, Musical improvisation. With the high funky vocal notes of japan mix styles, it brings the groove that able to tap my feet along. For me, im into the upbeats of groove and funk, im in for Deerhoof.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

I'm going to go with Deerhoof on this one. I find them significantly more engaging live and Apple O' maintains a place in my top twenty-five albums of all time, particularly on a warm, sunny summer afternoon.
However, I'd certainly question how you can simply state that one artist is 'better' than another. I think this question needs a little more clarification. I mean, Sufjan would probably beat Satomi in a wrestling match, but she'd be totally better than him at yelping and maybe even fishing. However, if Sufjan were to join Deerhoof, then the united forces of these two behemoths of alternative music would surely be immense to the point of causing upset to infants. Similarly, if Deerhoof were to play as Sufjan's backing band on his next tour, I can imagine 'Casimir Pulaski Day' sound quite different. Possibly even better? BETTER AT WHAT?

2) rockism is an ideology that tends to favor heterosexual white males, because its main belief is that there was a "golden age" of pure music (usually thought to be the 60's and 70's). Rockism is a sexist, racist, homophobic ideology.

2) Rockism was invented in the 1980s in England. It started during the 2-Tone Movement of bands like the Specials and the Beat who were mixed race groups playing Ska-influenced music. They broke down a lot of barriers in the British music scene at the time. The first record to get to number 1 with a Black British singer was "Ghost Town" by the Specials. This led to a much greater racial integration in British music with bands like Thompson Twins and Big Country all featuring black members, not to mention my favourites the mighty UB40. Some music fans opposed this trend and continued to support white only bands like Iron Maiden or Duran Duran. This reaction was known as Rockism. Is that 8 sentences? ;-)

4) From what I've heard of Deerhoof they're a shitty comedy band so I have to choose Sufjan Stevens. He writes some classic tunes with lots of feeling, and his lyrics are up there with the greats for me. He has a tendency to do too many stupid noodling "experimental" bits on his albums but as a songwriter he's great. I'd like to hear him do more solo acoustic stuff and get away from the overblown band thing. Deerhoof sound like a Midlands group from the 80s called We've Got a Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use It. They were a crappy novelty band who dressed like Punks and played really bad versions of proper songs. I don't like novelty bands or bands who play badly whether it's on purpose or not. It's just music for students pretending to be funny or clever. So then, Sufjan.

2) Rockism is the old-school love and production of classic American rock. It dates

back to British rock around the seventies, and mainly describes music that includes

the classic array of rock intruments, namely guitar, bass, and drums. Rockism

values the old methodologies and use of original instruments, and strays away from

the use of electronic keyboards and the like. Many dislike the ideas proposed by

rockism because of the wide range of controversial subjects it covers. It

sometimes, rather than simply creating a new, and sometimes awful sound, borrows

ideas from different genres, including disco and hip hop, and uses them together.

Critics have also charged it with supporting racism, sexism, and homosexuality,

because the artists that generally produce for it are heterosexual white males. In

my own personal opinion though, rockism produced some of the best rock, and i listen

to it more than I listen to any other music. Except maybe techno ;)

4) I don't really have a preference, mainly because I've only heard a few of their

stuff, but my room mate perfers deerhoof. He likes them better because they've been

around longer and he's had more experience with them, and views Stevens as kind of a

wannabe who stole from deerhoof. I think they both sound interesting, but haven't

really analized the music much. If i get the account I'll be sure to look for some

of them :D

2) Rockism is an interesting ideology that criticizes music based on its "authenticity" in relation to the Rock n' Roll concept supposedly perfected during the 70s and 80s. Anything that seems to branch away from such a concept is thought to compromise the purity of the music and therefore its authenticity. While some may argue that because the ideology of rockism is normally catered towards heterosexual white males, it is racist, sexist and a whole of other "ists" generally created when everyone takes everything too seriously. There are admirable qualities of rockism, the take on creating music with pure creativity in mind, not subject to the restraints of the music industry. However, current capitalist trends tend to crush those who are unable to adapt to change. On the other hand, others claim that rockism is not such a thing, but a "dichotomy between art and commerce". The trend of criticism tends to source from extreme views of this ideology, on both sides of the spectrum, rather than an unbiased, moderate view of rockism.

4) While I enjoy both approximately the same, I sort of prefer the light hearted, whimsical sound of Sufjan's Illinois. For some reason I can also relate to the Christian allusions in Seven Swans. The chaotic and occasionally awe inspiring and unrelenting sounds of Deerhoof sometimes scares me and doesn't help me go to sleep. Even though it is good for what it is. While "better" is a rather obscure term and I can bore you philosophically telling you why "perfect" is relative, I like Sufjan Stevens better than Deerhoof, but give me Kings of Convenience any day of the week.

5) Between 0-1. I think one is a more preferable number however.

1)Beenie Man – Art and life [192kbps]
J-Live – All of The Above [192kbps]
Roots Manuva – Awfully Deep [192kbps]

2) Rockism means idolizing the authentic old legend (or underground hero) while mocking the latest pop star; lionizing punk while barely tolerating disco; loving the live show and hating the music video; extolling the growling performer while hating the lip-syncher. Rockism isn't unrelated to older, more familiar prejudices - that's part of why it's so powerful, and so worth arguing about. The reason why OutKast and the Roots and Mos Def and the Beastie Boys get taken so much more seriously than other rappers is because rockist critics love it when hip-hop acts impersonate rock 'n' roll bands. Rockism is imperial: it claims the entire musical world as its own. Rock 'n' roll is the unmarked section in the record store, a vague pop-music category that swallows all the others. If you write about music, you're presumed to be a rock critic. There's a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for doo-wop groups and folk singers and disco queens and even rappers - just so long as they, y'know, rock. While there are many definitions of what rockism is, the best summary is when rock music is percived as the 'normative' state of popular music, which means that any other form of music (pop, Hip-Hop - any genre which has emerged over the past couple of decades)is not percieved as worthy of rock n' roll. Rockism is an attitude about evaluating music, and as critics or listeners with critical ears, it would only make sense to be tolerant about the issue, to level the playing field as best we can.

4)I dind’t know any of the two artists so I checked around on the internet and I heard Sufjan’s “songs for Christmas”.That’s way over the top if you wanna be recognized as an authentic artists in my book. After being exposed to these highly irritating soundtracks, I got on Deerhoof’s myspace. I found their live video’s they posted on there a very good reason to never go and see a live show of them. A very messy and uncontrolled sound must blast from every stage they are performing on and if that’s what people like about them, that’s okay with me but in my opinion they got a long way to go to make it in my collection. The only one I liked was the drummer, he can lay it down but the guitar and vocals are terrible in my opinion. So now I have to choose between two artists I don’t like wich one I like better. Despite the Christmas album I heard, I choose Sufjan Stevens, at least it sounded clean.

Some people believe that it was brought to us as a gift from Jesus, but this has been proved untrue in the second Star Wars movie ('Empire', not the other one). Sometimes I like to eat rockism spread between two intact rockists and this makes me an anthropagiast. I'm seeking counselling, but the real bottom line is that a taste this vibrant and powerful cannot be denied. A rose is a rose is a rockist rose. With a name like rockism, it's gotta be good. This is the eighth sentence.
