Every bar in SF knows what a sidecar is.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 04:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Every Abbott is within 100 miles of bars that are only crappy and know how to mix four kinds of well boozes with coke, tonic, or (if you're in an especially nice one) ginger ale. And they'll usually open your budweiswer for you and sometimes give you fresh glasses, too, if you ask a couple times.

Which is why I drink at home.

You should move to SF. I'll sponsor you.

Is Campari served in skanky old public houses or only in classy establishments?

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:07 (sixteen years ago) link

In the US, both but only on the coasts.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:35 (sixteen years ago) link

In Aust? I am looking for a new drink to try tonight.

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:35 (sixteen years ago) link

What the fuck is Campari? Pics please.

Bimble, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I generally have decent luck asking barkeeps what they like to pour. Ask for a drink with campari and see what you get.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Campari is a red liquor. It's quite bitter, and extremely delicious.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:39 (sixteen years ago) link

The staff type of pub I am going to tonight will probably give me a look of "whatthafuk?"

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:40 (sixteen years ago) link

It's quite bitter

like Benedictine? That stuff tastes like grass clippings. So I would find it quite different to Malibu & pineapple then?

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't had either, but I think that if you find bitter tastes appealing, you may like campari.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Bitter tastes...so are you supposed to mix it with anything? What would happen if you mixed it with soda water?

Bimble, Friday, 13 July 2007 06:02 (sixteen years ago) link

How about cranberry juice?

Bimble, Friday, 13 July 2007 06:02 (sixteen years ago) link

mmm Campari on the rocks....the official drink of Team Zissou.

i always suspected a chinotto/campari connection, but now it's confirmed

"The chinotto is a small bitter citrus fruit from the chinotto, or "myrtle-leaved orange" tree (Citrus aurantium var. myrtifolia). The tree grows to a height of 3m and can be found in Liguria, Tuscany, Sicily and Calabria regions of Italy. The chinotto is an essential flavor component of most Italian bitter amari digestifs, and of the popular Campari liqueur."

oooft. so bitter. had to force it down

cozen, Thursday, 17 October 2013 18:17 (ten years ago) link

its an acquired taste iirc

just sayin, Thursday, 17 October 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

how did you have it? just with soda?

just sayin, Thursday, 17 October 2013 18:29 (ten years ago) link

soda, large wedge of orange

was seriously difficult to finish it. does a negroni take the edge off?

cozen, Thursday, 17 October 2013 19:03 (ten years ago) link

yeah, it has sweet vermouth in it which balances the bitterness.

just sayin, Thursday, 17 October 2013 19:10 (ten years ago) link

if you're not in the mood for the full hit of a negroni you can make a campari americano - a negroni but with soda water in place of gin.

i find campari often tastes a little too much like marmalade for me these days, though i still drink it on the regular (i'm drinking a campari-soda right now!)

can't imagine finding it bitter, unless you also find marmalade bitter.

Well, I mean, it's bitter - it's an amaro! - but it's... sweet-bitter. (one of my housemates once said he found it too sweet and syrupy, like cough medicine, which i didn't really understand)

I keep meaning to branch out into the other amari - amaro ramazotti, say, or that one that's made from artichokes or something.

i was going to post the video for Jennifer Hudson's "Spotlight" where she bails on her possessive boyfriend and goes to a club where they ONLY SERVE CAMPARI, but the edit on Vevo has significantly fewer shots of red glasses and campari bottles.

that shit is nasty.

campari g&t

buzza, Friday, 18 October 2013 02:09 (ten years ago) link

Now that it's October swap the gin for bourbon. Boulvardier!

Playoff Starts Here (san lazaro), Friday, 18 October 2013 03:22 (ten years ago) link

that one that's made from artichokes or something.

Cynar is my favorite of all of the amaros

Spritz, yo. (1 part soda 2 campari 3 prosecco.)

I normally like bitter tastes but found this astringent

may give it one more go, with something to take the edge off

cozen, Friday, 18 October 2013 09:36 (ten years ago) link

Campari and cheap white wine, mixed in equal amounts, with ice.

mahb, Friday, 18 October 2013 10:00 (ten years ago) link

i love those campari soda bottles

whaaaat?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 25 November 2013 10:18 (ten years ago) link

I've often wondered if hops are among Campari's secret ingredients; that earthy, tannic, oily bitterness reminds me of US IPAs.
