The radio is meant to have changed too. I've not checked that out yet.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Album pics seemed to have appeared.

They hired someone, well, I don't know how long ago, who's been doing a lot of updating, primarily by linking in catalog data from Amazon. The album pics are the upside. The downside is that a lot of artists now show two separate versions of the same album (one acquired via musicbrainz, one via amazon), and about half of those albums now seem to have no tracks. Bugs the sh!t out of me, but I understand they're doing it to generate revenue, so people have more options to buy things with just one click.

If you haven't used Pandora recently, check it out - they did a big update this week, too. I wrote about some of it in my journalhere.

Pandora?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 23 June 2006 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

http://www.pandora.com, it's another "music discovery engine." It's been written about quite a bit in different places (including here on ILx) but the basic idea is that they have people identify characteristics in songs - say, "mixed acoustic/electric instrumentation" or "minor key melodies" -- and then based on a song or artist you give them, stream a series of songs with similar characteristics. Quite neat.

An entreprising programmer has set up a proxy at http://pandorafm.real-ity.com, which allows you to record what you listen to on Pandora onto your last.fm profile. I go through it usually.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Friday, 23 June 2006 22:16 (seventeen years ago) link

this is really cool. i suppose i may be somewhat insane for being concerned that the songs i play on pandora aren't being recorded on my profile, but this will make me feel a lot better about my work listening when i forget to bring my ipod in.

Hmmm... It seems to be posting some random songs that I've never heard of. Thanks LastFM!

Either I did something wrong or LastFM is completely screwed up. I guess it doesn't matter because it only seems to update my currently playing list about once a year.

Does anyone know how I can circumvent my firewall at work so as to get the last.fm player to work?

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Friday, 30 June 2006 08:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Not me, but that sounds like the kind of question I've seen asked before on the last.fm forums. Have you tried searching there?

pleased to mitya (mitya), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks - I had a look, but it seems the question had never been really answered...; Wouldn't be possible to stream the last.fm radio through WMP or iTunes?

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Friday, 30 June 2006 12:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not a technie, so I can't give a proper answer, other than to say that that's the way it used to work. But about a year ago, I guess, they changed over to the separate player module. There was a lot of grumbling, but from what I understand, it was a technical requirement for the site to continue to work (or grow).

pleased to mitya (mitya), Friday, 30 June 2006 12:39 (seventeen years ago) link

(Although there is the last.fm proxy if you REALLY want to use iTunes or WMP, although I understand it doesn't work as well as it used to.)

I like the pics beside the albums/tracks though. Also if you click on the slightly hidden black icon on the top right just to the left of where your username is you can change your page to BLACK if you don't like the colours.

Also, not that anyone will be all that bothered:

Right...

It seems my partner has put Itunes on my computer. It seems to be a bit nicer than windows media player, but it doesn't scrobble, even with the plugin downloaded. Are any of you using it, and how have you managed to make it work? Otherwise, as I'm currently obsessed with lastfm, its back to WMP.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Monday, 18 September 2006 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm at a little under 50,000 tracks played, and there is certainly a problem with misleading overall charts - I haven't listened to most of the artists on my top 50 in months.

That said, I don't think I'll reset my charts anytime soon, as all it would take to solve the problem would be more short-term charts (3 month, maybe) taking the dominant place on the profile, pushing overall and top tracks lower (or even kicking top tracks altogether, it seems worthless). It's a user problem too, in my case; the more music I get, the less inclined I am to listen to the same albums over and over again, making it difficult for new bands to rise to the top of my charts no matter how much I like them.

That, and it might be nice to look back on as a kind of musical yearbook or something later on.

That's my experience too - the few few albums I ripped from CD are heavily over-represented.

Yeah, it's buggy for all I think. I make it a point to not play anything not tagged well, but it still seems to stop recording at random.

Sometimes if I check it a day or two later, a large stockpile of played songs will suddenly show up tough.
