lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:31 (eight years ago) link

tv shows whatever

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:31 (eight years ago) link

sports docs are totally graded on a curve - not to say that they should be, but i think that's definitely the case.

slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:32 (eight years ago) link

an episode of espns previous doc series the direct rip off of behind the music (behind the... lights?) wld prob pass for a 30 for 30 ep no prob

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:34 (eight years ago) link

most likely due to lowered expectations given that the subject is sports and not, say, edward snowden's whistleblowing

slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:34 (eight years ago) link

thx for blowing our minds w/ the insight that bill simmons has yet to produce a mailbag or podcast or tv show that can compare to shoah. maybe next you can weigh in on fetty wap vs bach.

balls, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:35 (eight years ago) link

lol u cant stop

http://deadspin.com/bill-simmons-is-a-shitty-writer-1703163076?utm_campaign=socialflow_deadspin_twitter&utm_source=deadspin_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow

not that this isn't in many aspects true, especially given how his writing has declined, but deadspin is in serious pot/kettle territory given that they employ drew magary to write what are basically simmons columns and mailbags with a lot more fuckwords and a v tryhard faux truth-to-power stance

slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:38 (eight years ago) link

importance of 30 for 30 series is that it's a particular type of content and it's on Netflix

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:38 (eight years ago) link

but since u asked fetty wap > bach

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:39 (eight years ago) link

now is that based on a similar calculation w/ 30 for 30 and pbs sports docs ie you're not actually familiar w/ either

balls, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:42 (eight years ago) link

u cld start yr own thread and just like say what u r pretending im saying then respond with yr very cool not wildly irrelevant strange zings

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:44 (eight years ago) link

all in defense of an obviously completely mediocre tv show

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:45 (eight years ago) link

i guess in answer to my original question: no one really knows why ppl like it, but they do seem to like it... a lot

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link

yes yr reading comprehension is great

balls, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:47 (eight years ago) link

there is no alternative for that kind of sports docu variety

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:48 (eight years ago) link

goon what's yr take on dylie dollas vs mahler?

balls, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:49 (eight years ago) link

espn had another series before: beyond the glory lol m/l same idea

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:50 (eight years ago) link

no one really knows why ppl like it

it is literally because there isn't much of an alternative, for those with any interest in sports docs, and as a result prob better regarded than it deserves as a whole. some are whatever, some have been very good. no more complex than that

slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:52 (eight years ago) link

i sometimes wonder if you're gregg easterbrook irl

xp

xxxp narrated by Jay Mohr

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:52 (eight years ago) link

if deadspin or fox sports 1 or whoever made better ones i think people would say they're better.

idk i feel like theres something else going on here, there is a simmons halo effect which radiates out from typical hyperbolic social media behavior "OMG THIS THE U SHIT IS FIRE" and then when journalists needed am accomplishment to point to in order to have balance in their simmons/espn breakup pieces it was sitting their conveniently, the only thing is it actually serves to obscure the truth which is that simmons was not that hard to fire for espn cause he was m/l a failure in his non writing roles which is the stuff he wants to do most

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:57 (eight years ago) link

in that sense i guess he is valuable to espn cause i dont think anyone wldve been talking abt 30 for 30 w/o him

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:01 (eight years ago) link

i did wonder if the overnights for that last gbh played a part, if it was just skipper realising 'this guy is never going to be worth the headache, the internet doesn't translate to bigger mediums, we've maximized what we're getting out of him' but it sounds like it really was just espn still being so damn sore at dan patrick. in lighter news cowherd might jump to do his own political talk radio show.

balls, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:04 (eight years ago) link

i think they prob fired him cause they were mad abt nfl/patrick/general difficultness but his ingenious ideas falling flat had to have made it easier

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:05 (eight years ago) link

yea i'm sure it was a conglomeration of all those things

god help us all re: cowherd

slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:06 (eight years ago) link

and for all the speculation w/ goodell i doubt simmons was really on his radar. in terms of journalists he'd like shitcanned i suspect rachel nichols is higher on that list, nevermind don van natta.

balls, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:07 (eight years ago) link

seems like its more an affront to the espn brass that simmons isnt being a team player

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:23 (eight years ago) link

i sometimes wonder if you're gregg easterbrook irl

LOW BLOW

call all destroyer, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:43 (eight years ago) link

the calculus isn't hard to figure out, if he were a team player they could ignore the financial return and if grantland were printing money he'd get license to keep being a pain in the ass

call all destroyer, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:44 (eight years ago) link

i admit that i am in fact gregg easterbrook

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 17:45 (eight years ago) link

brookings institute fellow responsible for the most tedious football writing ever published

There was a gap in the market for middlebrow sports docs and bill was smart enough to realize that and push for the project, to find directors to give it some street cred, and to fight to keep it on the air after the initial run. Now ESPN has a product they can put on Netflix. The rest of their shows are built around the present day and have no shelf life. Plus, 30 for 30 won ESPN a Peabody and a few other awards, which are nice feathers in your cap for when people say you're the devil. So they have an middlebrow prestige show that people actually watch and from which they continue to make money, and Simmons made it happen. And every hour they air is an hour where Rick Bayless's brother isn't saying something racist.

i'd love for simmons to go to deadspin and demand they fire whoever "albert burneko" is

k3vin k., Monday, 11 May 2015 19:06 (eight years ago) link

they cant fire albert burneko... he follows me on twitter

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 19:07 (eight years ago) link

hating on simmons like that is just like...bless your heart man. gotta churn out those $20 a pop columns somehow i guess
