Seems unlikely, if they were going to upgrade the engine then the move to next gen would've been the time to do that. And there's really nothing wrong with the engine as it is anyway.

Harmonix have saved me from the Rock Band dilemma by dropping support for keyboards, which means I'm sticking with RB3 anyway.

Ok this launched for PSVR yesterday and I really shouldn't be starting all over again in a new ecosystem (my original table purchases were on Xbox and then I got a ton of extra tables on PC too through bundles etc, I even bought the 3ds version) but I couldn't resist picking it up. And ohhhhhh shit it's AMAZING, by far my favourite version yet.

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/06/28/announcing-pinball-fx3-the-biggest-most-community-focused-pinball-game-ever/

I haven't played in a while but I'm still interested. Wish I could somehow merge my PC/Xbox tables into an account and/or move over to PS4.

I guess if they take this as an opportunity to move to cross platform leaderboards then that'll be a good thing, even if they're clearly not going to go so far as "hey bring all your PC tables over to PS4" or anything.

Sounds like that's gonna happen! Glad I got one or two of those Humble Bundles.

Urgh. So FX3 came out, I've not tried it on console because all my tables were on 360 and this gen I've only got a PS4, but I've given the PC version a try and it's pretty awful.

- Apparently there are graphical improvements, but I couldn't see any.
- Frame rates are massively down, I could previously maintain a solid 60fps at 1440p on my surface book, in FX3 I've had to drop to 1080p and I'm still seeing regular stutters
- Tables now level up as you play: you unlock upgrades which mean eg the bumpers score more per hit, or the multiball scoring increases by 15%, or whatever. So trying to score well on table before you've fully levelled it up is pretty pointless, they've managed to introduce a pointless grind to fucking pinball. You can turn that stuff off, but the online leaderboards are based on it being turned on.

I've only just noticed FX3 in my Steam library. Installing now so will give it a try, sounds like I'll be disappointed though.

Hate to admit it but the RPGification stuff is actually pretty compelling so yeah, I've ended up playing the new version a lot more than I initially expected.

Irritating thing which might just be me getting something wrong - they make you connect your steam/MS/PSN account to one of their own zen accounts, but don't give you enough control to let you make sure that eg your steam/MS/PSN accounts are all linked to the SAME zen account (which is the main reason you'd want to be able to do this).

Yeah it seemed literally a button click and then um, what ok

Played Spiderman, Empire Strikes Back, Secrets of the Deep, and trials of Jaws, Aliens and Adventure Land

I like it yeah, graphics slightly improved but not outstanding. I still have issues with some of the ball physics too.

Personally not bothered about the upgrade stuff, seems they're trying to go for the mobile phone game appeal.

It would be cool to see some more old fashioned style tables on there as well

Don’t know whether anyone’s been paying attention but they’ve announced Pinball FX4 (though it’ll just be called Pinball FX). And they’ve managed to piss off the entire fan base. Previous purchases don’t carry over, every table will need to be paid for again. And they’re not launching on Stream (it’ll be an epic game store exclusive). And they’re not launching on PS4/XBOne either, it’ll be next gen only on console (except they’re sticking with Switch for some reason? Maybe just to further annoy the PS4/XBOne owners who can’t play it on their more powerful consoles?).

They got bought out last year so I’m guessing none of these cash grab decisions are actually coming from the dev team themselves but still, folks seem pretty angry. I’d actually got to the point where I had all 99 tables on steam over 8-10 years or whatever, so yeah, no way I’m rebuying all those at £3-4 each.

They’re ditching their own engine and rebuilding everything in unreal 4. That’s the main justification they’re giving for “so you need to pay again” but as a user who cares what the engine is? It’s all very weird and poor decision making on their part.

Oof. Terrible move, huge part of the appeal was that you could carry the library over from gen to gen, as long as you were in the same console or PC ecosystem. Then again, I haven't touched this game in years - hopefully they use the next-gen opportunity to actually change things up somehow. (But as you said, they're sticking with Switch, so... probably not.)

According to Zen, the game “will introduce Pinball Royale, a new multiplayer action mode incorporating frantic battle royale-style gameplay.
hm.
