weird how ahead of its time that movie was

Οὖτις, Thursday, 30 April 2015 21:09 (nine years ago) link

in the sense that it's better than every superhero movie released after it, sure

contendo conformo (Noodle Vague), Friday, 1 May 2015 00:01 (nine years ago) link

The Tick cartoon did everything Mystery Men was trying to do better and funnier.

Mystery Men does not hold up

SCHLITZ MIXED BAG (Sparkle Motion), Friday, 1 May 2015 05:14 (nine years ago) link

Mystery Men was bad when it came out

( who ALSO my boss and his sister!) (sic), Friday, 1 May 2015 07:34 (nine years ago) link

Mystery Men was trailblazing in the sense that it was the very first of the thousands of movies that have featured Smashmouth's "All Star"

some dude, Friday, 1 May 2015 10:32 (nine years ago) link

apparently it also appeared in the Matthew Broderick Inspector Gadget which was released a month prior, although it obviously owes its ubiquity to its appearance on the Shrek soundtrack

Number None, Friday, 1 May 2015 11:05 (nine years ago) link

it owes its ubiquity to being the greatest song ever recorded

bizarro gazzara, Friday, 1 May 2015 12:00 (nine years ago) link

what is the 2016 equivalent of "all star" for suicide squad
perhaps something by adam lambert

that's surprising, there was a whole soundtrack tie-in with "All Star" and Mystery Men, cast of the movie in the video and all

some dude, Friday, 1 May 2015 18:15 (nine years ago) link

I still like Mystery Men

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 May 2015 18:36 (nine years ago) link

Last time I caught some of it I was struck by how incredibly long it was.

Cassanova Frankenstein is one of my alltime favorite comedy names, second only to Arsenio Billingham.

SCHLITZ MIXED BAG (Sparkle Motion), Friday, 1 May 2015 19:42 (nine years ago) link

I never actually saw Mystery Men, which is odd considering how much I like the cast

Doktor Van Peebles (kingfish), Friday, 1 May 2015 19:47 (nine years ago) link

It's not bad and it has some laughs but it doesn't hold a candle to its source material.

Come to think of it, this era of wacky comic adaptations might be the prime time for Burden to start a push for a Flaming Carrot film.

More Fetid Than Fêted (Old Lunch), Friday, 1 May 2015 19:54 (nine years ago) link

Or maybe scratch that, as I can very easily imagine a Flaming Carrot film being terrible.

More Fetid Than Fêted (Old Lunch), Friday, 1 May 2015 19:55 (nine years ago) link

it doesn't hold a candle to its source material.

no argument here cuz man do I love me some Flaming Carrot. It's one of those things that I'm surprised got made at all and I hope it made Burden a ton of money.

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 May 2015 20:06 (nine years ago) link

I assume MM got made precisely because FC as a character would be a pretty hard sell visually in the film-world

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 May 2015 20:07 (nine years ago) link

Flaming Carrot is one of the funniest comics I've ever read. And it still holds up.

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 May 2015 20:33 (nine years ago) link

it hasn't been fashionable in forever so that's not too surprising to me. he made so goddamn many pages of comics!

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Friday, 1 May 2015 20:39 (nine years ago) link

Oh way, Free Comic Book Day is tmrw, maybe the local shop will have a trade on sale

Why does Will Smith look like shaft with a cowboy hat?

Harley Quinn looks like the people who hand out shots at Rockstar Mayhem fest.

everybody else look like either extras from Battlefield Earth or ex-members of Hollywood Undead.

Will Smith actually is the best in the pic

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 4 May 2015 02:54 (eight years ago) link

I'm sure style and visual design is one of many categories this film will fail miserably at.

but after seeing the Batman v Superman trailer and knowing Zak Snyder that one will probably be more aggravating

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 4 May 2015 03:01 (eight years ago) link

Harkness' ankle boomerang holster duct-taped to his leg seems an interesting choice.

Here's Deadshot's mask, which will be see on screen for what, 15 seconds?

Disappointed that there's no yellow in his costume, but the muted crimson banana clips are nice.

I'm still curious whether Will Smith will play him as Floyd Lawton or as Will Smith, but I ain't holding my breath. At this point, if the flick gets more people interested in and reading and flowing some small royalty stream to Ostrander et al for 80's Suicide Squad, it'll be good enough.

Also, movie-Harley's outfit is far less stupid than her current Nu52 get-up, at least.

under Diane Nelson?

and yup, that's a quote from John 14:6 on his costume & his rifle– 'Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.'

(depending on yer preferred translation)

I don't know, I'm grabbing at straws here.
