West Indies captain Chris Gayle has hit out at England batsman Kevin Pietersen for comments in a newspaper interview about team-mate Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

Pietersen was quoted as saying that Chanderpaul "never fields" after making a big score and "plays for himself".

But Gayle said Pietersen had "no right" to make such a remark.

"I did talk to him and told him 'You don't need to stoop to that level'. He didn't actually apologise and if he could apologise that would be nice."

Chanderpaul, 34, is a veteran of 119 Tests and 244 one-day internationals and has scored more than 16,500 runs for West Indies in all forms of the game.

Pietersen's comments about him appeared in a wide-ranging interview with the Daily Mail newspaper.

But Gayle said: "Whatever issues he had, he should have kept to himself. I've played with Shiv for years and, as a captain, I get tremendous support from him both on and off the field.

"His batting in both forms of the game has been brilliant and to hear these sorts of comments out in public has been very disappointing."

He added: "We're all big men. There's no need to go to that level and try and degrade other players.

"No-one wants to be degraded in this manner. We're all human beings and everybody is playing this sport to enjoy the game but to take it to that level is very disappointing."

In the interview, Pietersen also said he was "at the end of his tether" as a result of his sacking as England captain and the team's lack of success on the current tour to the Caribbean.

His mood will not have been improved by the manner of England's eight-wicket defeat in Barbados on Friday when they were all out for 117 and the home side knocked off the runs in 14 overs - with Gayle making 80 off 43 balls.

awesome catch from flintoff but i still cant tell if he touched the boundary or not. WI crowd not happy but you really cant tell if he did or not. WI 147-6.
Freddy is an honest guy so i think he'd own up if he touched it but he couldve done without knowing. Any of you see it? from 1 angle there looks like a ripple but from other angles there's nothing. So i guess it must be out.

England denied a request from batsman Kevin Pietersen to make a brief return home during the West Indies tour.

Pietersen asked to go home for 48 hours midway between the third and fourth Tests because he was homesick, but the request was refused by management.

He said last week he was "at the end of his tether" with two more one-dayers still to play on the tour.

But stand-in coach Andy Flower has reaffirmed Pietersen's commitment to England's cause in the West Indies.

"Kevin is very proud about what he does and he's very proud of this team," Flower told BBC 5 Live's Sportsweek.

"He's doing everything in his power to win. He's been training as hard as anyone I can assure you, and he is very fired-up to win this one-day series."

Pietersen, 28, quit as England captain in January after a rift with coach Peter Moores, who was sacked.

In a newspaper interview he admitted to mental fatigue on the long tour, which comes to a close with the fifth and final one-dayer on Friday, 3 April.

"It's been a heck of a tough time and I'm at the end of my tether now," he told the Daily Mail.

"Really and truly I can't wait to get home."

But Flower insisted that any fatigue was associated with Pietersen's personal life and not his cricket.

"He didn't say he didn't want to play. What he meant, I believe, is that he wants to get home and see his family," said Flower.

"Sometimes in his downtime he gets a bit homesick like everyone, but this isn't a bad place to be - we all appreciate how lucky we are as international cricketers and he's no different in that regard.

"He appreciates where he is but, look, he's a little frustrated, he's said something in the press and that's been seized upon.

"The important thing is that these guys are playing for England. Everyone has to embrace that responsibility and enjoy it and in the main, that's the case

135 the target, a maximum of four overs per bowler. Eight overs of powerplay to England - so that's almost half the innings with only two fielders allowed outside the circle.

Which is what you want from a skipper and presumably why he has put himself in as opener. It's how he played in the test series so it's got my vote. Even if he fails I think it was a good idea.
