pretty into the La Vie Claire cap

the most painstaking, humorless people in the world (lukas), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 16:14 (eight years ago) link

renault is pretty badass.

saw this old pic with what looks like a painters cap with CO state emblem, that's a very very good look imo for that application, but probably would not hold up under a helmet

one month passes...

Child transportation ideas, please.

I'll be needing to take Nora to the nursery at work from September. If I go direct, which I will with her, it's a 1.5 mile route, mostly down a straight but reasonably busy road (busy with people going to campus).

Trailer looked good until a friend said he'd never use one on the road because motorists don't see them.

Child seat seems OK.

Would like a cargo bike but they're expensive.

Ideas and thoughts?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 8 June 2015 13:59 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, it's a tough situation. Buddy of mine dropped his kids at care in his trailer, and got hit by a car while pulling the empty trailer on the way home, that pretty much ended the trailer concept for him. I don't recall what his next solution was.

I have new tyres. Challenge Strada Bianca. Exciting.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 11 June 2015 10:30 (eight years ago) link

lol I'm rocking a Gatorskin on the back sand a cheapo $12 generic thing on the front; I'm waiting for it to go so I can replace it but tbh am in no rush to drop $45 on a new tire.

WE WANT FET WAP (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 11 June 2015 12:49 (eight years ago) link

I'm investing in a Brooks saddle but there are about 80 or 100 different models! What the FUCK do I pick!?

WE WANT FET WAP (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 01:42 (eight years ago) link

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY SADDLES

WE WANT FET WAP (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 01:42 (eight years ago) link

Cambium for the win.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 05:47 (eight years ago) link

Being serious, though, I've had a Cambium since Christmas. Not only is it beautiful, it's incredibly comfortable, takes less care than traditional Brooks saddles, and matches my bike better, too.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 08:16 (eight years ago) link

The only thing I know is that B17 is the popular one. I ride a medium amount (7-10 miles a day) and use it almost exclusively for commuting around the city and not so much for recreational use or long-distances. I've got a road bike with riser bars so I'm a little more upright than dropped bars but I'm certainly not sitting straight up like a cruiser.

WE WANT FET WAP (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 14:14 (eight years ago) link

The Cambium I have is the C17, so the equivalent of the B17.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 09:14 (eight years ago) link

it's so heavy, i'd only ever put it on my utility/commuter, but it's so expensive i'd never risk having it nicked = despite being a lovely sleek thing, lol no way brooks.

wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 20:42 (eight years ago) link

My bike is v much not remotely about speed these days. Though I did set some PBs yesterday on a stretch I've done hundreds of times, which was unusual.

Just got a nice Carradice Pocket Roll bag. Lovely. And will be full of flapjack on our Bristol-to-Exeter ride next weekend.

I want a Ringtail vest and cap. http://www.ridewithringtail.com/#products-list

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 08:22 (eight years ago) link

Think we've decided to just go for it and get a cargo bike. Any advice?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 July 2015 12:24 (eight years ago) link

Right on time, road.cc produce this - http://road.cc/content/buyers-guide/156481-best-cycling-child-seats-and-trailers - which is a useless heap of crap.

Commenter graham_f parks his Bullitt bike next to me at work, actually; he's been all my source of info so far. And he is fucking outrageously fast; loads of KOMs round Dartmoor. Not set on the Bullitt, though.

my garmin 500 is now over 5 years old! that seems hard to believe, that i've been living here in the future, with flying cars and robot assistants for so long.

anyway, i pre-ordered a new 520, so the 500 just needs to hold out a few more weeks.

seven months pass...

never actually bought that Brooks but I'm going to in the next few weeks now that I have my tax return and I'm gonna be riding so much more! I'm still leaning towards the B17 or the Cambium C17 -- any more input from anyone?

ooh the more i read abt the cambium the more i love it

Just put new rails on my cambium (they were slightly bent after the car crash ages ago). I adore it.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 06:22 (eight years ago) link

I'm worried the texture will cause too much friction and eat through my jeans real fast :( I always bike in slacks or jeans

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 25 February 2016 18:21 (eight years ago) link

if it's any consolation my brooks saddle has murdered so many pairs of jeans in the last few years

Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 25 February 2016 18:40 (eight years ago) link

Like just the regular smooth leather one? really?? rn I'm using some synthetic Origin-8 saddle. It's okay I guess

I want a C13 for my best bike

cozen, Thursday, 25 February 2016 22:10 (eight years ago) link

xp. actually now that I think of it I have a really sloppy mount and dismount style and my saddle is old as hell and has a crazy kink in it so this probably goes some way to explaining the damage it causes my jeans

Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 25 February 2016 22:15 (eight years ago) link

I think i have one high country adventure left in me an the trails up high are still clear. The ride goes to 4000m but has a shit ton of hikeabike- basically most of mining road from 3400m to 4000m at 17% thats collapsed over time til now you cant ride it. This concept is so close to what i imagined during my rin this morning, but yeah, better. The little sling cup that holds the post is brilliant, i rather think i can improvise that with my fine duct tape skeez.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/peakrider/peakrider-the-first-bike-carrying-system

I scored a bday pres to me- i wanted to replace my 25y/o lugged carbon frame on my dirtdrop bike, and i found a lovely 15 y/o mongoose/sandvik frame. My 97 dean ti was also built by sandvik, so now my roadie and my dirtdrop will be half-brothers. great welds and geometry, both. ‘goose came with a good shape v. light air/oil shock, think i may leave it on for now and take the dirt drop over this- look at the pics tab.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 14:45 (five years ago) link

Sorry by “this concept” i meant the carry device, obviously.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 14:47 (five years ago) link

Fwiw, the ride “concept.”
https://www.trailforks.com/ridelog/planner/view/38373/

the trail in prev link is the second big descent in the profile, the hikeabike clumb follows it.😮

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 14:51 (five years ago) link

jaysum that looks pointy

also i like the look of that carry system but i'm less certain about schlepping a mtb up some via ferrata, yikes

gbx, Friday, 14 September 2018 01:55 (five years ago) link

All my bros are unable to join so far, and while pre injury Hunt3r would go solo at that no hesitation, my current profile advises me to wait for an ally. otoh i could end up the george mallory of iltrmb which is a pretty rad way to leave remains lol/not lol.

Hunt3r, Friday, 14 September 2018 02:41 (five years ago) link

as the official brain medico of iltrmb i would strongly advise/prefer that you not end up the george mallory of this website, ty

gbx, Friday, 14 September 2018 02:45 (five years ago) link

And yeah youve seen my pic from my prev trip up that hike- no ferrata at all- its just 17% loose scree at 12k ft which for me is not climbable on the bike, but was totally rideable down.

I’m on stamsted’s twitter and thought about asking him for THE LORE of how to do Argentine-style slogs, but he probably would advise riding it or shouldering it and running or whatever superhuman legends do. (stamsted won montezumas back in the day, and i think the very very nearby grays peak 14er was in that loop set back then).

gbx, come on up and do this eh? 🙂

Hunt3r, Friday, 14 September 2018 03:07 (five years ago) link

thx for cautionary advice- taken to heart, truly.

Hunt3r, Friday, 14 September 2018 03:09 (five years ago) link

after watching doc crash reel, its amazing and selfish the risks ppl feel compelled to take, or at least ok with taking- that’s always in my head.

no mallory in me.

Hunt3r, Friday, 14 September 2018 03:11 (five years ago) link

i'm a fat cat 6, there's no way i'm pulling that off! let's do the pony xpress next spring instead

gbx, Friday, 14 September 2018 04:07 (five years ago) link

Did the ride, it was long fun and very hard. That hikeabike-y bit from 11200ft to 13100ft, which was a firm 1.3 hours on fresh legs, was 2.3 hours and fucking exhausting after already climbing 5000ft on road and dirt. I was super glad to have done the test piece, because I know I had it, but conditions from fatigue were radically more challenging.

SO i'm in the gear thread because my ride pal had on of those adventure bikey style top tube baglets for phonecam and goodies. i realized i want that. his is magnetic closure and says he's never dislodged gear (i think its a Serfas). he mounted it back against he seatpost, rather then the more typical stem junction. i hate accessing saddle bags, and don't wear cycling jerseys on my mtb rides usually. i need one that will hold a phone, a tube, a co2, maybe a clif bar and a gel. for me that's good for 3-4 hours. if i need more, i'll have a water pack that i can load.

Do you all have top tube bags, and if so what do you recommend?

My recommendation to you all using trails is: https://www.amazon.com/TIMBER-Mountain-Bike-Bell-Release/dp/B0184TO7NY . i really love this thing, you can turn it off, soft, or loud. loud is pretty damn loud and a rough descent. i have been riding with my kid's hs mtb team, and saw a coach with one. it is perfect for high-volume, blind corner-y places.

v nice. for how i go, if it won't take 50s, i'd pass tho.

we are all sooo spoiled with the variety available imo.

td3 takes 50+ on 27.5. def my style.

when i texted the honch of rodeo that i _must_ have over 2" and so couldn't go td2 last summer, he said "this fall" and... he was good to his word. dunno if i'll ever afford it.

Hunt3r, Sunday, 10 March 2019 03:40 (five years ago) link

I like the look of both of those. I’ve been eying up the latest iteration of the Salsa Warbird. Of course it would require me to have a right foot more firmly attached to my leg than it currently is.

PaulDananVEVO (||||||||), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 18:18 (five years ago) link

i like how it do, and i’m legit impressed with the thoroughness of that evans cycle responsiveness. questioners go fairly deep and evans seems to legit at least give a fuck.

Not sure i want thru axle for a multi purpose long range bike. For a trail bike def, for an xc bike probly, but a core adventure bike? not sure. Then i go, why NOT? and i guess... good point really. Going 2x is correct here imo.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 19:14 (five years ago) link

what’s the downsides with thru axle ? lack of replacement parts in far flung / rural locales ?

PaulDananVEVO (||||||||), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 19:56 (five years ago) link

thats what i meant by “good point,” the basis of my reservation is not well-supported. They are def better with suspension, marginally better for steering control, and i’m not aware of failure issues. For deep site exploration and adventure they may be hard to fix/replace- but harder than dics? no. Plus i’m premium and shipping is free.

I’m going to sound really old but I remember when Evans was F.W. Evans was just one shop in the Cut by Waterloo station. They built frames and I had a touring bike of them in flam green.
