If Halftime's meant to be a highlight, more meme rap pls

maybe he ran out of hits or accidentally dropped them in the ocean

'speed racer' and 'warrior' and the ocean is actually metroboomin's soundcloud

"sure for a casual listener i get being confused but for a bunch of rap critics to be vexed by the idea of like, album tracks that are also dope?" has anyone actually voiced that opinion?
anyway i like this album a lot more than i did at first, a bit dull in the second through fifth innings-ish but otherwise very good to great
― soyrev, Thursday, 23 April 2015 01:35 (nine years ago) link
I actually... LIKE this.

"I'll get pretty and fuck your father" is a truly terrifying threat.
― longneck, Thursday, 23 April 2015 06:25 (nine years ago) link
^^ Is this a quote from "numbers"? Isn't "i'll get prison and Fuck your father Up"?
― Nourry, Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:26 (nine years ago) link
I like longneck's version better.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:35 (nine years ago) link
It's from Numbers, yes, and there's some debate about what he's actually saying. There might well be a prison in there, but I'm not sure about why he would "get" it. Not hearing the "up" at all though. He's def going for my father.
― longneck, Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:38 (nine years ago) link
to my ears it sounds like longneck's version.
I like this thing as much as his other stuff: there's stuff I skip and total bangers.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 April 2015 10:02 (nine years ago) link
It is 100% "get prison" but there's no "up" at the end

someone jokingly paraphrasing your characterization of their opinions is not evidence for the accuracy of your characterization
B6 is fine but clearly the new Rich Forever that deej is hellbent on canonizing as the artist's masterpiece regardless of what anyone else thinks
― Take Off Your Chance and Rapper (some dude), Thursday, 23 April 2015 14:15 (nine years ago) link
Could it be "fuck niggas wishin i get prison I'll fuck your father"? Would make sense.
― longneck, Thursday, 23 April 2015 14:16 (nine years ago) link
Lol what? I'm not trying to canonize it as his masterpiece and you can do a quick Twitter search for Barter 6 and the word hits, you're liable to find plenty of people whining about the lack of singles on it there
And I'm def not the only one who thinks rich forever is one of Ross' best projects, where are u even getting that from? Is this your way of bringing back the "chief keef had no influence on anything ever" argument you're curiously invested in?
― deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 23 April 2015 14:39 (nine years ago) link
I didn't just come up with this out of nowhere, like, I saw lots of people from many walks of life complain about the lack of hits. I mean, you can listen to it and hear it actively seems to spurn hit records. Not sure what you're even arguing with
― deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 23 April 2015 14:41 (nine years ago) link
what comedian does a bit where he threatens to seduce your father and make him fall in love with him and destroy his sense of self? it's gotta be louis, right?
― Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 23 April 2015 14:42 (nine years ago) link
Last night at a boosie listening boosie described his song with young thug and a very aggro beat as his "Chicago record"
― deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 23 April 2015 14:57 (nine years ago) link
xp yeah it's a bit called "i hate this one kid" from the beacon theater special
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 23 April 2015 15:02 (nine years ago) link
(actual thread-related thought: barter 6 is really good although i havent really dug into thug's mixtapes other than the one with quan so i don't have as many points of comparison)
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 23 April 2015 15:06 (nine years ago) link
That kinda makes sense. I've previously argued that "there's something wrong with the pussy" is Thug's version of Seinfeld's big vagina routine.
― longneck, Thursday, 23 April 2015 15:20 (nine years ago) link
Ehhhhhh Larry David's I mean. Brainfart.

yeah but not at the expense of "album tracks that are also dope." the popular opinion on that has been more like "there are a lot of album tracks here that are not dope (and sound samey); some hits would have been nice."
― soyrev, Thursday, 23 April 2015 17:19 (nine years ago) link
Sure but these are all dope album tracks so

Just read the Pitchfork review and man Garvey is easily one of my favorite critics right now; her reviews for We Invented the Bop, the Future Brown album, and now this are all so on point. Even her blurb for 1989 on the Top 50 Albums list of 2014 was incredible.
― misterjoshua, Friday, 24 April 2015 07:01 (nine years ago) link
Yeah she's great.
― longneck, Friday, 24 April 2015 09:40 (nine years ago) link
@D-40 ah okay, couldn't tell you felt that way
don't love the album as a whole *quite* as much as her, but yes, the Garvey review is really nice. and she even makes space to acknowledge the level "Just Might Be" is on :D

Best New Music/link to that Meaghan Garvey piece (which I thought ws nice bt kinda overreaching, esp once fuckin Halftime reared its dull head again) up on Facebook, dunno if that's anything

(I mean I don't remember if YT getting BNM is impt to Pitchfork politics and doubt that's germane to this thread anyway)

Oh don't get me wrong, I agree with the review, I think it's not at all far off from what I've argued itt in fact
― deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 25 April 2015 15:28 (nine years ago) link
yeah you and her definitely are on the same page with the album, i don't think anyone would deny that
interesting that Rich Gang's "Tell Em (Lies)" is still lurking around the lower reaches of the radio airplay charts right now
― frogteasip (some dude), Saturday, 25 April 2015 17:02 (nine years ago) link
that tape had regional hits, kinda like old gucci mixtapes used to. Like I saw "Imma Ride" was getting play in Atlanta according to shazam...pretty sure I saw "I Know It" and "Flava" bubbling in other places but i can't remember specifically where
