Ha, will always associate FNM with The Word for whatever reason. Very nostalgic clip for me.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 20 April 2015 19:09 (nine years ago) link

Aye they were always on it. All their clips are on youtube from it

Decibel reviewer didn't like it much but then again he also said KFAD and AOTY were almost unlistenable. which, ok, I am not a huge fan of AOTY but it has "Collision", "Stripsearch", "Last Cup of Sorrow", and "Ashes to Ashes"! and KFAD is great!

looking forward to this and seeing them.

SF show tonight was fun! They did a Boz Scaggs "Lowdown" break in the middle of Midlife Crisis (substituting the MLC lyrics) that was on point & awesome

i did 'a small victory' at my senior year high school talent show; i was the guy in the background screaming HUT...HUT... HUT... HUT HUT HUT and IT SHOULDNTATA BOTHA ME NO
at the end of the song we screamed into the microphone and had a full on freakout then paused and flipped out again every time the emcee tried to come back on
oh we were so clever

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 22:01 (nine years ago) link

There's no way I could reduce it to only five for this band.

Gentle Art of Making Enemies
Stripsearch
I Started A Joke

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:07 (nine years ago) link

DL, you should listen to Angel Dust all the way through today.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:27 (nine years ago) link

I realize that Angeldust gets the bulk of the critical acclaim for the band and that people also mention the following two releases as well but fuck man, I still adore The Real Thing and still find myself playing it a lot more than any other FNM release. Yeah, it was their biggest album (in America ay ant rate), the one that broke the band, but I don't consider that a deterrent.

I admit a personal bias towards this one. I worked at Tower Records in the village in NYC from late 1989 for a couple years, my first "music biz" job after I left home to go (back) to NYC. I worked in the tape department in the basement. I adored this album from when I first picked it up after seeing the "From Out of Nowhere" video on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball" while still in Virginia before moving. I played it literally every day I worked and I know I was personally responsible for selling 100+ copies of the damn thing just through repetition and talking it up to customers and this was leading up to it really took off much later in 1990.

But even if I take a step back and try to look at it objectively, I enjoy the accessibility of the album. To me the none-too-subtle removal of the hooks from Angeldust was kind of a reverse sell out, a rebellious reaction to their unexpected but glorious success. Which they were entitled to do and which created another great album for markedly different reasons, but one that I simply don't play as much.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:31 (nine years ago) link

There are loads of hooks on Angel Dust! So many! I genuinely think it's a much better more and interesting record than The Real Thing, which I find a bit grating (largely because of the nasal vocal thing Patton does on it, the songwriting is solid).

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:35 (nine years ago) link

AD was admittedly my first FNM album, there may be a pattern here.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 23 April 2015 09:36 (nine years ago) link

the real thing was my first but angel dust is clearly the masterpiece. album of the year was my 2nd fave. played it last night and it still holds up

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Thursday, 23 April 2015 13:29 (nine years ago) link

My Faith No More albums ranking goes something like this:

1. Introduce Yourself
2. The Real Thing
3. King for a Day, Fool For a Lifetime
4. Angel Dust

Never heard Album of the Year.

fish or click bait (how's life), Thursday, 23 April 2015 13:54 (nine years ago) link

1. Angel Dust
2. AotY
3. KFaD
4. The Real Thing

Sol Invictus might sneak the number two slot with a few more listens. I've never given the pre-Patton stuff much of a chance, perhaps unfairly.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 23 April 2015 13:56 (nine years ago) link

Angel Dust
The Real Thing
Introduce Yourself
King For A Day
We Care A Lot
Album Of The Year

but they're all great. Not sure yet where Sol Invictus would place.

NotKnowPotato (stevie), Thursday, 23 April 2015 14:02 (nine years ago) link

[low placing for AOTY just because I've played it the least so far; slept on it in 1998, only really revisited it post-reunion]

[Mark Bowen and As The Worm Turns off We Care A Lot two of my have FNM tracks, but prefer later Patton live versions over Chuck versions]

nycnative, i fucking loved that tower records. we probably crossed paths a few times.

I love Angel Dust - especially now that I'm older, musically I find the arrangements really layered & cool

Like RV is so weird vocally but musically it's kinda beautiful, and Everything's Ruined - I love the soaring guitar in the background through the chorus & but the also the haunting piano in the verses

there's lots of really creative stuff going on!!

not that there isnt on all their albums but this one stands out artistically, like they really flex their collective muscles here imo

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 23 April 2015 17:52 (nine years ago) link

Yeah it's the album you get the sense from the most that they're combining ideas and techniques from different genres to create new hybrids rather than just doing a lounge song for a laugh or whatever.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 23 April 2015 17:59 (nine years ago) link

I haven't heard this yet, but definitely looking forward to it. King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime is my second favourite FNM album after Angel Dust, and I always felt it was an incredibly underrated album on the whole.
