ha this comparison is super astute and would also drive a fair size portion of rap fans completely see red

somewhat embarrassingly i own a signed 2lp copy of internal affairs that says "thanks [rtc] keep supporting real hip hop!!" so plz fwd all complaints for this hyper tenuous tangent to me i guess

r|t|c, Friday, 17 April 2015 21:44 (nine years ago) link

that album is awesome no shame

that said i should have sold it when its CD price peaked at like $100 back in 2006 or thereabouts

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 17 April 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

o yeah no killer record it's more my sad dereliction of duties to real hip hop in the time since

birdman > puff

Daukins (Arctic Noon Auk), Saturday, 18 April 2015 10:51 (nine years ago) link

"He made it a point every night to change clothes. The fashion and his style was definitely something that stood out. He performed in long johns one time, and the poncho. One end of the spectrum he's wearing Hooters tank tops, then on the other end he would come out in the new Yeezys or the Red Octobers, stuff which caught people like, 'Oh wow, this guy can dress.' That's something I've seen since the beginning with Thug. No matter how people try to make fun of it, he's so confident in his skin he can literally wear anything and make you a believer. He made it cool to wear whatever and no one questions it. "

Daukins (Arctic Noon Auk), Saturday, 18 April 2015 10:53 (nine years ago) link

Lean reasons itt literally make no sense btw

, Saturday, 18 April 2015 12:45 (nine years ago) link

pretty boring really. i really like him (and his fashion sense), but i'd rather listen to any of the actual carters tbh...

soyrev, Saturday, 18 April 2015 13:45 (nine years ago) link

YT and London gave us so many great tracks on Tha Tour only 7 months ago that i don't really mind that they sound a little tapped out here.

some dude, Saturday, 18 April 2015 13:57 (nine years ago) link

this is his If You're Reading... to HiTunes' Views from the 6, right? even by that metric it's not so great, but that has me hopeful for what's next. i'd like more "About the Money" YT

soyrev, Saturday, 18 April 2015 14:03 (nine years ago) link

"Just Might Be" is fucking sick though

soyrev, Saturday, 18 April 2015 14:08 (nine years ago) link

that would seem to be the line of thinking, although HiTunes is ALSO coming out on 300 Ent so i'm guessing the only real difference will be having more big name guests, more radio promotion of advance singles.

some dude, Saturday, 18 April 2015 14:08 (nine years ago) link

my favorites are all on the back half (Just Might Be, OD, Amazing), the sequencing is really doing this thing no favors.

some dude, Saturday, 18 April 2015 14:09 (nine years ago) link

any of the actual carters?

@somedude and a more active, radio-oriented sound, i'd guess. sequencing def a little weird but "just might be" as closer is the smartest move this album makes.

@brad honestly, yeah. IV is up and down but it's got "she will," "how to hate" (probably unintentional, but really absurd/surreal), "6 foot 7 foot," some top-shelf late-period nas, and is seldom boring. "just might be" definitely beats any one thing off it, though.

I think once u let ur expectations be reshaped by this album u will fall in love like I have in the past 24 hours

bingo

deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 18 April 2015 15:38 (nine years ago) link

i really don't think it's an issue of him being 'tapped out' or something ... this seems like the active pursuit of a particular aesthetic

i think also ppl's expectations for a career in 2015 are weirdly sped up, like he literally only even got real attention a year ago

deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 18 April 2015 15:40 (nine years ago) link

@kanji i will keep trying. i want to like it.

soyrev, Saturday, 18 April 2015 15:55 (nine years ago) link

Lol we don't call it a kanji, jakob

, Saturday, 18 April 2015 15:56 (nine years ago) link

quan shd come back

lag∞n, Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:38 (nine years ago) link

did jakob have expectations? he's only heard 1017 thug once and hasn't heard tha tour pt 1 yet.

misterjoshua, Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:39 (nine years ago) link

there were a bunch of those tracks that leaked that were supposedly from tha tour pt 2. there were like 10+ of them iirc. up up and away was one i remember digging a lot.

misterjoshua, Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:41 (nine years ago) link

ya thats what made me think it was maybe done already

lag∞n, Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:41 (nine years ago) link

or that both volumes were gonna be from the same sesh

lag∞n, Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:41 (nine years ago) link

When is metro warrior coming out

, Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:42 (nine years ago) link

also, will say i'm digging the album a lot more than my initial listens. i think i kind of just wanted some dun deal-produced stuff since pelican fly and friend of scotty were killer

misterjoshua, Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

srsly what the heck xp

lag∞n, Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

i went back and listened to 1017 thug today. much of it is kind of unlistenable

deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:51 (nine years ago) link

like its 'weird' or 'interesting' but not good

deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 18 April 2015 16:51 (nine years ago) link

@hanzi but not technically wrong! :)

@mister i had limited expectations, but some. (i'd read that this was a spacey, spacious record and was excited for what that might mean in the YT universe, but this isn't so spacey or spacious after all imo.) the notion of a talented young wayne acolyte being bold enough to (try to) name his record carter 6 was definitely intriguing, too.

so far i like the idea of thug more than the thug of the real, but i think everything about him on "about the money" is mindblowing. in a very different way, i now like "just might be" just as much.

soyrev, Saturday, 18 April 2015 17:10 (nine years ago) link

@mister btw, creep game strong *_*

soyrev, Saturday, 18 April 2015 17:13 (nine years ago) link

hmm i still think of it as pretty spacey/spacious

deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 18 April 2015 17:18 (nine years ago) link

idk a lot of these beats are the same kinda dramatic trap brooders we've heard thousands of times in the past 4 years. young thug's prowess as a vocal stylist is present but not really explored as much as a "spacey" YT album makes me imagine. i guess i was thinking something more like lil wayne "single" beats paired with lil wayne "can't believe it:" verse, but pushed farther out/more to YT's strengths. (and i guess i was hoping as much based on the whole carter 6 / wayne obsession angle)

going to give it some more time though.

soyrev, Saturday, 18 April 2015 17:43 (nine years ago) link

i don't think he really sounds like wayne at all at this point nor do i think he's trying to do anything really wayne-like

except maybe for the first song where he seems to be intentionally referencing him?

i feel like ppl are looking for more EXTREME young thug but that was always the aspect of thug's appeal which was least interesting to me

deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 18 April 2015 17:50 (nine years ago) link

or at least, it was only interesting inasmuch as it was in tension w/ his pop appeal
