busty giantesses something of a specialty for Amazing Stories cover artists

haha, yeah, i always struggled to parse "a world he never made," figuring it had to somehow be a pun or something, given its association with Howard the Duck.

do any other Marvelisms feature prominently in rock songs?

Ha, that makes me realize that "Waitin' For A Superman" is basically a magnificent re-rendering of these covers in ballad form.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 12 April 2015 16:37 (four years ago) link

The strapline from the new series, "Trapped in a world he's grown accustomed to", is sadly the only good thing about it

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 12 April 2015 19:07 (four years ago) link

This sorta fits into the "too late" meme - either way I just love this cover

Housman is pretty bummed about the world he never made:

The laws of God, the laws of man,
He may keep that will and can;
Not I: let God and man decree
Laws for themselves and not for me;
And if my ways are not as theirs
Let them mind their own affairs.
Their deeds I judge and much condemn,
Yet when did I make laws for them?
Please yourselves, say I, and they
Need only look the other way.
But no, they will not; they must still
Wrest their neighbour to their will,
And make me dance as they desire
With jail and gallows and hell-fire.
And how am I to face the odds
Of man's bedevilment and God's?
I, a stranger and afraid
In a world I never made.
They will be master, right or wrong;
Though both are foolish, both are strong.
And since, my soul, we cannot fly
To Saturn nor to Mercury,
Keep we must, if keep we can,
These foreign laws of God and man.

feel compelled to make a Legion of Super-Heroes/A Shropshire Lad joke but can't quite get there

let your hip go hippety pump pump (soref), Sunday, 12 April 2015 19:24 (four years ago) link

The Houseman is very Jack Kirby if you just add an exclamation point to the end of each line.

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 12 April 2015 20:18 (four years ago) link

The laws of God, the laws of man!
He may keep that will and can!
Not I: let God and man decree!
Laws for themselves and not for me!
Gone! Gone! -- the form of man --
Rise, the Demon Etrigan!!

That does not look like a Byrne page!

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Friday, 24 April 2015 15:46 (four years ago) link

Sloppy secret-ID security to refer to himself by govt name out loud.

WilliamC, Friday, 24 April 2015 15:48 (four years ago) link

huh I hadn't noticed but yeah that really doesn't look like Byrne does it

WHAT A MESS!

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Friday, 24 April 2015 16:27 (four years ago) link

that cover is one of those panels that if you try to imagine in what order the action and the dialogue take place, your brain will break

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Friday, 24 April 2015 16:51 (four years ago) link

like did he see ulik running down the street at him and he just planted his thor self in front of a truck and soliloquized and at the end ulik rams him into a truck
or is he micromachining through the dialogue as ulik rams him
does he get halfway through the speech and then ulik connects and he just screams the rest as he's flying through a truck
we just can't know

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Friday, 24 April 2015 16:53 (four years ago) link

this particular phrasing seems almost entirely limited to Marvel, like it was just a stock phrase approved for use by editors

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 April 2015 17:04 (four years ago) link

He gets rammed between the round balloon and the spiky balloon, obviously. "Oh, Ulik's back" RAM "Oh shit, I'm in trouble."

Who is Ulik, BTW?

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Friday, 24 April 2015 17:08 (four years ago) link

RE: the Byrne Marvel Team-Up page - well, SOME of it looks like Byrne (especially one of Spidey's legs!) but I'm guessing his pencils weren't that tight, or the whole page was heavily reworked by the John Romita art 'correction' squad. Dave Hunt was Joe Sinnott's long-time assistant, and could also be a fairly dominating inker at times.

Chris Claremont's Marvel Team Up run is a classic Marvel run and one that seems to be a bit under the radar in compilation. I think the story with John Byrne on artwork with Spider-man and Luke Cage saving the people in the building fire is one of the 10-20 best single issues in Marvel comics.

this is not really the same thing, but I like it when 60s marvel books have a final panel in which the hero ruminates on his own failings, and sad Iron Man is just killing me
