that too, tho as i was clear abt u can have defensive role players they just need to be either a. better than thabo at O or b. big man rim protectors

there was the story when matt gieger bought his house how iverson accidentally left behind a mercedes and a pile of cash

this was not your argument as initially presented, you are changing gears, moving goalposts etc.
If your argument is that there's some really key offensive difference between Andre Iguodala 2015 and Thabo 2015 idk man.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:43 (nine years ago) link
per 36 stats are deceiving imo, if thabo was decent on offense he would prob shoot more than 4 times per game
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:44 (nine years ago) link
I always heard that Iverson just sat at the stage and tipped ones dourly, maybe he just had a bad day.

i'd suggest that ai write a book on strip club etiquette but i don't think it would have a very wide audience

he's very much not decent on offense and neither is Iguodala and yet they're rotation players for two elite teams in this modern, changed NBA that doesn't like defensive role players
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:45 (nine years ago) link
igoudala's shot really comes and goes but he can still make things happen on the fastbreak and is a nifty passer, they're not really comparable offensive players
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:45 (nine years ago) link
all good teams have bad players on them it doesnt mean those players are making the teams better it just means those are the players the teams have
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:46 (nine years ago) link
he plays for an offensive juggernaut that creates transition opportunities nonstop and averages 1 more assist per 36 and the same number of points xp

your argument was that it's never "fine" to have a guy who doesn't offer anything on offense and it seems very much "fine" for these two teams that are the top seeds in their conferences.
So now you're making it all about Thabo being specifically, legendarily bad in some way which doesn't really wash.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:48 (nine years ago) link
being a bad offensive player on the wing/perimeter is a much harder sell than being a bad offensive player down low imo
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:49 (nine years ago) link
matt obviously like if a team had the best four starters in the league it wld be "fine" to have whoever playing with them, u r a master class in pedantic bad faith point missing
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link
it wouldn't be fine, you'd notice it for sure if they had, for example, austin rivers in the lineup.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:52 (nine years ago) link
it seems obvious to me that thabo is a useful and competent regular season player who becomes a big sore thumb in the playoffs
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:52 (nine years ago) link
but if you had 4 offensive studs? A guy like Thabo would fit in well. xp
we've had way too many arguments about thabo sefalosha on this board
well he is very bad

eh, rivers hasn't made the clippers worse per se, bc the bench wasn't exactly a model of efficiency before his pops traded for him - not the best example
― slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:54 (nine years ago) link
austin rivers is basically like the worst guard in the nba though
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:55 (nine years ago) link
i am happy to concede that austin rivers is worse than thabo, like thabo is a minimum contact 11th man, rivers is a 3rd tier foreign league player
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:56 (nine years ago) link
thabo got a 3 year deal
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:57 (nine years ago) link
from a front office that isn't dumb
i don't think you want to be playing him in the playoffs though (problem solved)
terrible deal

dont stand around outside the club shd be in the rookie training weekend
Thabo is what, the 8th man?
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 20:00 (nine years ago) link
I think it's fine to have players who offer nothing on defense or nothing on offense if they're exceptional and Thabo is exceptional on defense.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 20:02 (nine years ago) link
paying thabo like ~5% of your salary cap isn't egregious
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 20:02 (nine years ago) link
i'm not sure i would do it, if i was running a team, but it's not the worst thing in the world
i don't think he's underrated though
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 20:03 (nine years ago) link
As is Iguodala, which is why two really good teams have them in the rotation xxp
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 20:03 (nine years ago) link
Thabo definitely not underrated, he's pretty widely respected as a role player. One person here underrating him tho.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 20:05 (nine years ago) link

this is a key pt, i think his presence on court is definitely a liability in the offs. dont want to decrease opp cost of doubling korver or milsap or teague

how much of this was a scott brooks problem vs a thabo problem tho. on a team with a real offense it should be less of an issue
― k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2015 21:34 (nine years ago) link
well scott brooks played him in the playoffs so that's a scott brooks problem. not being a playoffs player is a thabo problem.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 21:35 (nine years ago) link
if the hawks played teague-thabo-korver-millsap-horford in the playoffs thabo would get an open look every possession, this is basically what happened with okc too and wasn't a workable offense

right i just meant to what extent were his offensive deficiencies magnified due to playing for a coach with a bad offensive scheme
in any event i don't think thabo is underrated, everyone around the league knows what he is and what he does. he gets dserious minutes from a good coach on a very good team. and his advanced numbers support him being a big plus on defense and a big minus on offense.
― k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2015 21:42 (nine years ago) link
scott brooks is a dummy but idk what coach can get scheme around a non-offensive wing being unguarded in the playoffs
