both of those major trades were pretty bad for the knicks though. the rest of the stuff is whatever i guess
― k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2015 02:52 (nine years ago) link
prigioni trade is perfectly defensible. that's about it.
― slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:53 (nine years ago) link
and it's defensible bc dumping pablo's money for the joke cost of a joke human known as shved is perfectly fine

resigining melo is the worst move he's made
― Clay, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:55 (nine years ago) link
I like Shumpert but he's a pretty fungible NBA asset at this point.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:55 (nine years ago) link
that move was pretty unavoidable, i mean the knicks were just not going to not re-sign melo, but yeah if you include that, he's 0-3 in major moves

i mean you can't be in a 3 team trade, export the only 2 players in the trade that are above replacement level, and have one of the OTHER teams get a 1st round pick. that trade was mind-glowingly bad
― k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2015 02:57 (nine years ago) link
oh of course he had to, rock and a hard place and all, but tying up like $140 million in a 30 year old volume shooter who can't play d and has bad knees is not good for the franchise long-term
― Clay, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:57 (nine years ago) link
phil doesn't seem to get that if you're gonna firesale all your assets you at least need to get something back
― k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2015 02:58 (nine years ago) link
not when you're a losing moribund franchise he isn't! he's replaceable with free agents yes but they'll replace him with someone old who will fail, it's the knicks
― slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 02:58 (nine years ago) link
the knicks will pay melo ~$28 million in *2019*, what will melo's game look like in 2019

I don't think Phil deserves blame for Presti's mistake.

I can't really imagine JR Smith and Iman Shumpert fetching a first rounder. Possible I guess but you'd have to find a real idiot.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 03:02 (nine years ago) link
I had kind of forgotten that Everyone's Favorite GM (circa 2010) did a panicked trade of a first rounder for Dion fucking Waiters
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 03:04 (nine years ago) link
so what you're saying matt is that you're actually jam3s d0lan and that's why you're defending all this and betting on shved

i have no prob with them trading chandler but that return is really abysmal, if they shopped him around and chose that they should've hung onto him
idk how the JR/shump trade worked out but given how desperate the Cavs were at that point I feel like they could've wrung that first rounder out of them
that said they needed to get rid of all those guys and they were prob gonna get fungible pieces back regardless, i honestly don't think we can glean much
i think this summer will be a much clearer indication of phil's worth as a GM

it's a three team deal! phil sent the 2 best players in the deal and ANOTHER TEAM got the 1st rounder! it's utterly indefensible
― k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2015 03:30 (nine years ago) link
btw i am watching this game and the steph/dame battle is amazing
steph and dame always seem to have at least one game a year that's just fierce as hell

it's not phil's fault that Sam Presti thought Waiters was awesome. If OKC had offered him the first rounder for Smith and Shumpert I'm sure he'd have taken it.
Could he have somehow gotten the pick by threatening to blow up the deal? I personally doubt it.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 03:36 (nine years ago) link
how are the cavs getting the wing help they wanted if phil doesn't do the deal?
― k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2015 03:38 (nine years ago) link
the knicks as a franchise have not exactly valued the draft historically speaking, I mean I legit would not be surprised if phil trades their high as hell pick in some sort of deal for a free agent.
― slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 03:41 (nine years ago) link
I don't think he's quite that stupid - even if he does still believe in the triangle in 2015 - but I wouldn't be shocked.
― slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 03:42 (nine years ago) link
the bulls ran the triangle a lot tonight btw
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 03:45 (nine years ago) link
it's tough cuz he's got what 2-3 years of melo being decent and if they believe in melo as a possible championship leader you can't waste that time developing a teenaged center
