I went to camp once when I was maybe 11? And the day we arrived I got my period, and I cracked my shin so hard on a bunk that I still have a scar from it, and we managed to get a counselor fired for threatening to tie us to chairs in the shower, and the entire week's highlight was going screaming, Beatlemania apeshit about some of the male counselors doing an air guitar performance at the end of the week talent show.

It was gross and I never went back. Down with camp.

LL you don't look happy in that picture. I want to go back in time and take you out of there.

The kids I went to school with treated me like prey, but we'd known each other our whole lives and I was their prey. The kids at camp harbored no such warm, familial feelings. It was a church camp, even.

I always wanted to go to camp so much. Only went once, to space camp, but that was just a week. I wanted a whole summer away from home, because it was so boring.

i was not happy
what i do remember: my parents were in Japan, I was stuck at a Christian camp where they fostered spiritual unity and inter-cabin competition and I was not a Christian nor was I interested in competing, and everyone actively hated me thanks to the girl I had been sent there with (top row next to sunglasses) because she told them to. i then went back to her house for a few days til my parents came home and all i remember is hiding in the basement. yesterday was her 40th bday. she's a republican!

I went to girl scout camp once, for a week. I was not a horse girl, but I signed up for the horse camp program, thinking I could maybe become a horse girl. It was fun, but a lot of work and fuck abuncha hanging out with horse girls.

Wait, you went to space camp!?!? That was my childhood dream for a good five years. Super jealous. I went to a dumb, awful Boy Scout camp. The only good thing that came out of it was discovering Too $hort via a dubbed cassette I found.

Never went away to camp. Always thought of it as one of those Yankee things, like starting school in September or taking an SAT.

Team Saturn, class of 1990! I actually wrote a stupid easy and got to go for free. Only way I could have went because my parents never would have been able to pay for it.

Jeff, is that Huntsville Space Camp or Canaveral Space Camp? I grew up in Huntsville and went myself in 1986, so I always get a little geeked when people from far away can say they visited my dumb hometown.

Cape Canaveral!

Jeff, Friday, 3 April 2015 23:48 (nine years ago) link

Ha! Well I ended up living close to there too, but I sure as hell don't think of it as "home".

I was supposed to go to sleepaway camp for the summer one year but I got scared and didn't want to go and backed out at the last minute. I'm pretty sure I would have hated it so it's probably for the best.

I went to a day camp on Fire Island every year and then worked there until I went to college. That was pretty amazing. Camp pic:

The kids go to a public school that every year sends the 5th graders to Space Camp in Huntsville.

The district has been in a little flux lately (we currently have no school board, long story), so we've got our fingers crossed that the school can hold it together until 2018.

So the weirdest thing happened to me today. I belong to a bunch of Facebook groups for Army brats and for people who were stationed overseas. Today, in one of those groups ("I Lived in Darmstadt, Germany") a German photographer posted a link to a book he just published called American Darmstadt, a coffee-table book with a history of Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne and other installations around Darmstadt from their immediate postwar period to their closings in the early 2000s. You can view the entire book online at http://issuu.com/christoph-rau/docs/american-darmstadt, so I'm flipping through it, and there, on page 196 of the book (p. 198 of the electronic document), is me, coming off a school bus in 1977. For a minute I wasn't sure it WAS me, until I sent the link to my parents and they said, "Yeah, that's you." Later, looking through my own pictures, I found two of me wearing the same jacket I'm wearing in the photo. It's easily identifiable by a zipper on the sleeve and its LOL 1977 wide, point collar.

What are the odds, out of all the tens of thousands of service members and their families that ever lived there, that 7-year-old me would show up on a page in this dude's book and that I would be in a position to see it?

First pic is a screencap of the page from the book website, second is the picture I found where I'm wearing that same jacket.

I don't know what circumstances led to a photographer snapping my picture getting off a bus in 1977, or where the photo would have been where this person got hold of it, but when I was browsing that book website and got to that page I was like

This was about six months before I had ever heard of "Star Wars," so that was the coolest space-related thing I could find.

I'm in the yellow shirt and the brown flares, my brother is on the right with a cricket bat and an excellent jumper.

The lad in the grey school uniform claims these were taken the day Elvis died. I have no memory of the photos but I was only six when Elvis died and I think I'm at least eight in these photos.
