title track on captain of none sounds like the studio producing young marble giants jamming with the durutti column. nice

Had no idea she had a new album out, or that she was touring the US. Now I have a ticket to see her!

A-Hanisi Coates (Leee), Thursday, 2 April 2015 22:24 (nine years ago) link

i don't think i'd heard of her before, but i have the new one and it is quite nice. i get an arthur russell vibe.

tylerw, Thursday, 2 April 2015 22:26 (nine years ago) link

funny how she has only 9 tour dates in the US and one of them is in New Hampshire. I bought a ticket to see her as well (but haven't heard the whole album yet)

one month passes...

I kind of miss the deeply melancholic Colleen, but this sunnier Colleen still makes pretty songs.

Wish we had a recording of her 2006 ArthurBall performance, it was a fest highlight, gorgeously psychedelic. Anyways. Here's an article we pub'd on her around that time... "UNDER A BLANKET: Amidst the culled samples and loops of antique instruments, where in Colleen‘s music is Cécile Schott?" By John Adamian

Short show!

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Friday, 12 June 2015 03:30 (eight years ago) link

Short? She played for over an hour, though it was a good length. Very...satisfied with the show. Didn't blow my mind but pleased me and was a long time coming (to the states).

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Friday, 12 June 2015 08:16 (eight years ago) link

It didn't feel like an hour! Maybe because I'd already seen her full setlist, anything fewer songs would feel abbreviated.

Were you as hypnotized by the drum circle hypnosis as I hypnotically was?

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Friday, 12 June 2015 17:25 (eight years ago) link

Yeah that was my favorite part. I would watch her do a whole set of dubbed out echo-ey drum things. She has done a couple of dub mixes to promote this album and they are very good!

That one track on the album that's a bit Augustus Pablo, that's great that is

two weeks pass...

last night's show was great! a lot of the live tracks were more chaotic/fux0red than the album versions — I loved the rapidfire knob-twiddling at the end of 'I'm Kin' and the chopped-up drum loop in 'This Hammer Breaks' (I was expecting her to use the drum onstage to generate the loop, but she used a prerecorded sample). her version of the Night of the Hunter lullaby (mentioned in the setlist Leee posted) was one of the highlights of the set; she got a cool oscillator effect by bowing her instrument while running her fingering hand rapidly up and down the strings. hopefully she'll release it someday because it seems to be a mainstay in her sets.

stoomcursus rockisme (unregistered), Friday, 26 June 2015 19:28 (eight years ago) link

It's too bad there wasn't a better turnout, though. I wasn't expecting a huge crowd at the little Portsmouth New Hampshire venue, but she deserved to have more than 30 people in the audience :-/

stoomcursus rockisme (unregistered), Friday, 26 June 2015 19:31 (eight years ago) link

Thanks for posting that it is really amazing. She has quite a variety of sounds from that very unique picking style!

finally bought her new album and now i'm extra bummed that i missed her show here
eclipse and captain of none are both great tracks, and different from anything i'm hearing these days
i like her a lot

La Lechera, Monday, 27 July 2015 16:03 (eight years ago) link

Her sound seems like a sort of stoner-ECM-dub collision, which is not a bad thing at all.

sorry, no results found for "Sekal Has To Die" (xelab), Monday, 27 July 2015 16:13 (eight years ago) link

she has the nerve to be totally mild and super weird at the same time, it's admirable

La Lechera, Monday, 27 July 2015 16:17 (eight years ago) link

i'm way into it

lil urbane (Jordan), Monday, 27 July 2015 16:20 (eight years ago) link

LL i wonder if you'd like this album? she doesn't have the melodic prettiness of Colleen, but the percussive analog dub parts feel similar:

I said this before somewhere but a lot of it is quite reminiscent of Malian kora music

i have never to my knowledge heard colleen before now, but captain of none is sounding p rad to me right now.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 9 October 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

From the two new tracks on Spotify, she seems to be incorporating more electronics again.

Yeah she’s been talking about this as her synth album on her FB page (which btw I recommend you all follow - full of thoughtful insights into her art and her life as an independent artist)

An old Colleen album is an almost perfect soundtrack for painting a wall Hague Blue (At the weekend, Hood's "Cycles of Days & Seasons" actually *was* the perfect soundtrack for staining a fence in the autumn sunshine).

Yeah the album is fantastic, just letting it sink in. And she's one of the very few I follow on FB. She's an inspiration. And chose to live in San Sebastian <3

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 20 October 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

and last I heard she teaches/taught English!
She is playing here but I have to teach that night ;_;

Someday I will see her. Never thought I would become such a Colleen fan but she keeps being awesome and making music I like so I have no choice.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 20 October 2017 21:13 (six years ago) link

New one is really good. Extension of elements of the last I loved, but something different entirely. This is probably going top 5 of the year for me.

Textures remind me of a semi-broken music box...underwater. In a great way.

dronestreet, Saturday, 21 October 2017 03:45 (six years ago) link

Loving this (Didn't hear the last one ... Should I?)

djh, Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

absolutely!! i really love Captain of None. it's more overtly groovy than any of her other stuff ime
i got the new one on saturday and listened to it twice in a row. it was one of those days when i totally disconnected from my life and just chilled out and colleen was 100% there when i needed her.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:19 (six years ago) link

Captain of None rules

nomar, Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:19 (six years ago) link

by groovy i mean songs like this -- the groove is implied, not necessarily heavy drum/bass

^^i found a new copy of that LP in the discount bin of a local record store that i think is mostly staffed by fans of Beatles imports and which has a Beach Boys surfboard on the wall for 100k. Colleen slipped through the cracks there.

nomar, Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:23 (six years ago) link

captain of none is her best
