as someone with short and skinny legs i would rep for nudie's tight fits. i have a pair of their tight long johns with a 27 waist that i love and are by far the best fitting jeans i've ever had. i'm probably just going to buy another pair in a different colour because i can't be bothered to hunt around for ages for a pair that fit ok and then i inevitably get altered a month later when i'm fed up with them.

two months pass...

have any of you ever done the shrink to fit thing? any tips? does it work? for levi's, i'm thinking

i have a few pairs of 501s but damn if the fabric is not up to the role of being a jean. and/or the dimensions are just subtly off for my body. they fit just fine but the panels around each "quadrant" of the intersected seams at the crotch wear out in like less than a year. i've had a couple repaired and they still get shredded.

i feel like if i did this cowboy alchemy fit process, they wouldn't be stressed in this spot and would last longer. true? bullshit?

i tried it [maracas.jpg] and success was only partial

soo the 'official' levi's suggesch is to size up 2" waist and more on inseam (they only make inseams on the even numbers too); i read a bunch of blogs etc and found this one that seemed to have some clue what was up:

http://thighsbiggerthanyourhead.blogspot.com/2010/12/how-to-shrink-to-fit-stf-your-levis.html

and followed his process: +1" waist, +2" inseam

i wasn't able to wear them until dry, so i just hung 'em up overnight. and they didn't shrink that much! my normal size for pre-shrunk 501s is pretty snug, which i'm down with, and the shrink didn't get them close. the waist fit much higher, too. i wonder if the cuts aren't subtly more generous on the STFs to begin with?

about a week later, i gave the same pair a second soak (with a couple full pours of boiling water from my elecric kettle to goose the weak temp out my tub) and an overnight to dry and they were still a bit loose. that was about 5 days ago.

i think since then they've continued to tighten up tho; i'm wearing them now and they seem a little less roomy and didn't absolutely need to be cuffed.

so idk about cowboy alchemy but we'll see; in another month or so they could be my fave. i've also seen some people recommend doing STF w/o sizing up at all, maybe i'll give that a shot

Getting into babycord jeans for the summer. Got some really nice designs in fabric. & they're pretty unique. Just wish I could get more choices about fabric.
Wonder if there are still caches of psychedelic babycord lying around anywhere or if they've all already been found.
Just remember reading Anne-Marie of Sweet Charity talking about finding stuff in the early 80s. & I'm stuck with whatever I can locate now.

just bought some slim black UNIQLO selvedge jawn sfor $15 on clearance!

WE WANT FET WAP (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 2 July 2015 21:09 (eight years ago) link

if you want a slim fit then basically just by your usual waist and at most 2" longer in the leg

So the "stretch selvedge" jeans (98% cotton 2% spandex) I got at UNIQLO less than a year ago already have a huge hole in the back pocket where my wallet is! I refuse to carry my wallet around anywhere else and it seems kinda nuts these got a hole in less than a year. I'm avoiding this not-100%-cotton selvedge in the future :/

five months pass...

This seems important

Got some Hudson jeans last month ($60 randomly at a TJ Maxx rack) and they're as good as any I've owned. Working for a start-up-ish company where denim is the status thing among the guys running the place.

My go-to pair for the last year or so has been a pair of Steven Alan jeans I got on sale - kind of your standard faded mid-blue without anything weird in the fades, just a very good fitting pair of classic jeans.

"denim"

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 15 August 2016 18:07 (seven years ago) link

idk where to go for quality affordable "denim" now that UNIQLO has elastic in their selvedge jeans and my back pocket wore out in less than a year :(

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 15 August 2016 18:07 (seven years ago) link

nudies on sale iirc. idk, I'm over the artisanal selvedge don't-wash shrink-to-fit denim lifestyle

mh, Monday, 15 August 2016 18:14 (seven years ago) link

here's another question: why are there so many fucking brands of jeans, why??? what does each new jean company offer that 10 others did not previously already?

gustin! just got nice medium-weight selvedge for 75 bucks during one of their stock sales.

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 August 2016 19:28 (seven years ago) link

black levis for me, they have become kind of a uniform

marcos, Monday, 15 August 2016 19:32 (seven years ago) link

Gustin is annoying bc orders take so long to come and returns are a pain. The one thing I got from them, a pair of blue-blacks, was nice but their "slim" fit was way tighter than other slims the same size, and after I started lifting a little they no longer fit. I may eventually try again and get a straight fit.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 15 August 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

that's why i buy when they have stock sales!

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 August 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

I also have a feeling their waist sizes are a little truer to size than the typical manufacturer, because the waist was always very tight even though in every other brand the same waist size fits me fine.

the gap has pretty good japanese selvedge denim and you can usually find them on sale

xp yes, gustin waists are true to size unlike basically every other manufacturer.

I benefited from this because my friend ordered a size that was too small for him but perfect for me :)

six months pass...

I need new jeans, what should I get? I'm sick of Uniqlo's denim now that it's built for comfort but not durability (I get pocket blowouts in <1 year when I wear them regularly). I don't want to spend more than $100. Should I just keep getting $40 Uniqlo jeans every year or two?

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 16 February 2017 14:40 (seven years ago) link

oh also I have to be able to try them on first so no boutique web stores

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 16 February 2017 14:41 (seven years ago) link

I still think nudies makes good ones that are not "omg selvedge" or "must wear these six weeks without washing while carrying bricks to break them in" but idk it's been a few years since I bought any

it's not a bad idea if you like them

marcos, Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:19 (seven years ago) link

im wondering if i need to get my jeans hemmed. im only 5'7" and a 30" inseam is a little too long for me, it's really hard to find shorter jeans or pants than 30". right now i have them cuffed which is fine but the cuff is a little too deep than i'd otherwise wear

marcos, Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link

now I'm having a flashback to the time I realized this guy that works at the other end of the floor at work was a chive bro and not only wore a backward baseball cap on fridays but also boot cut jeans that had been dragging the ground until the back of the hem was blown out

mh 😏, Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:24 (seven years ago) link

boot cut hmmmm

marcos, Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:25 (seven years ago) link

you know what I'm talking about with this jeans dragging the ground thing, right

I was kind of in awe, that this late 90s college bro look was in front of me at work in 2015

mh 😏, Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:26 (seven years ago) link

you have to complete that look with black italian-style loafers iirc

yet again i'd recommend cos.

i managed to get some Neuw 'Iggy' jeans (not heard of the brand before but they were really decent) for quite cheap from TKMaxx. If I'd known I'd be so pleased with them, I'd have bought two pairs but they don't stock them any more.

i feel like just keep buying cheap is a good idea unless anyone has any recommendations for really high duality durable fancy jeans.

i used to wear nudies for years but just got into buying used 501s and stuff for a while there after going off skinny jeans, but just bought a pair of nudie thin finns, i will get back to you in a year as to whether they have fallen apart

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 February 2017 20:12 (seven years ago) link

do nudies run smaller than usual? the models on their site make them look like they're mostly super skinny cuts

Fβ™― Aβ™― (∞), Thursday, 16 February 2017 21:39 (seven years ago) link

I had one pretty regular sized pair and a skinnier pair, waist runs relatively true and not inflated

mh 😏, Thursday, 16 February 2017 21:50 (seven years ago) link

the waist seems true in that i could just about fit into a 32 but had to admit to myself I'm really a 33. they have a variety of cuts with some of them being v skinny. i wear thin finns and I'm a pretty skinny legged dude and they're pretty tight

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 February 2017 22:14 (seven years ago) link

waists on jeans stretch out really fast ime. i've been a 31 for years, but tried on a bunch of 31s recently that felt really tight and at first thought "oh i guess im a 32 now." after a day of wearing them they felt totally normal though.

marcos, Thursday, 16 February 2017 22:18 (seven years ago) link

that is true, you want them a bit snug to begin with for sure

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 February 2017 22:18 (seven years ago) link

my legs can't fit into anything smaller than a slim and even that is sometimes pretty snug

saw a couple cool designs

i need jeans as well, but i might just stick with levis

Fβ™― Aβ™― (∞), Thursday, 16 February 2017 22:38 (seven years ago) link

i just started buying more $ jeans and getting them repaired. crotch blows out on almost any pair unless they have that double layer that some companies build in now. i think if you search for cycling jeans you should findÉ anyway most cities should have someone who can chainstitch those badboys back up, nothing feels better than wearing a pair of jeans you've already been wearing for ages

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Thursday, 16 February 2017 23:12 (seven years ago) link
