it's not really a sock if the screenname is an anagram for the screenname of the same guy who was expressing the same opinions he definitely really believes before

it's kinda funny that "For Sale?" is billed as an "Interlude" since it's like 5 minutes long and has multiple verses and a chorus, kinda seems like a "song"

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 14:52 (nine years ago) link

i love little things like how "Momma" fades out with Kendrick just flowing and flowing, he's at that stage rappers are at sometimes where it feels like he could just keep rhyming and rhyming and rhyming awesome shit forever and ever

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 14:58 (nine years ago) link

the Momma outro is maybe my favorite thing on the whole album

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 15:06 (nine years ago) link

"Momma" as a whole might be my favorite thing on the album.

lil urbane (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 15:12 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I had the same thought about the outro, it's this teasing hint that there are a bunch of other great tracks that didn't make the 79-minute cut.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 15:33 (nine years ago) link

The similarity to Game Theory by The Roots is there for me as well, if only because both albums interpolate tracks from Amnesiac in the last third.

klonman, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:01 (nine years ago) link

There's no Radiohead in this album, I'm pretty sure any resemblance to Pyramid Song is coincidental and related to shared source material - ie jazz.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:09 (nine years ago) link

I highly doubt that

Number None, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:16 (nine years ago) link

damn, Earth Rot sounds like Pyramid Song too!

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:18 (nine years ago) link

axelrod must be a fan

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:18 (nine years ago) link

Well, reason I assume Radiohead is due to the Flying Lotus connection; he has talked about being obsessed with pyramid song in the past.

Hey Earth Rot sounds like Ole by Coltrane too! Coltrane must be a fan!

klonman, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:35 (nine years ago) link

what is the standout song other than the first track? i think no one would agree on that. which either indicates a really strong album or a really weak one. it's a good album though i just have no desire to listen to it past the first time. i dont know why. seems difficult to listen to because it's so disjointedy (not in style) and long.

Lot's of people are saying the album is really boring and doesn't really grab you and pick you up like good rap usually does, it's more like listening to a spoken word album, not my thing.

Arctic Noon Auk, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:36 (nine years ago) link

lyrical content wise he seems a bit parochial never able to really spread out, crossover and touch into wider issues of life beyond the hood like the best rappers of his type are able to. Like the common themes that people can relate to. 2pac, 3000, Nas, Slick Rick etc would be good at this, not only able to talk about hood aspects but able to look from the wider perspective that everyone can relate to in their own way.

Shakespeare would write plays for the common folk that were often just based on royalty or set in venice, but the themes would be wider reaching than that, so that everyone gets into it. Breaking Bad did the same thing. Kendrick doesn't.

don't think this has been linked here yet:

imo glasper's Black Radio 1 and 2 are among the more quietly influential albums in hip hop of the past five years and they're starting to see some return now

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:53 (nine years ago) link

glasper sez

Don’t worry about what you call it! One song may be more hip-hop than the other song. Like people kill me with that. Because why are you stressing yourself on what to call it? Just love it, and maybe there will be another definition down the line. When hip-hop was first born, everybody didn’t really know what to call it. They were just like ‘woo we love this sound. What is this sound?’ Just enjoy it! Then figure out if it even needs a label. It may be something that hasn’t had a label yet. But people are so quick to want to put something in a box. Because it’s almost like if they can’t understand it or can’t define it, they can’t enjoy it for some reason.

huh never heard of this Glasper guy before. that quote is very otm tho

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 16:59 (nine years ago) link

he has a trio with Chris Dave, who is like the most influential contemporary drummer and is the go-to guy for D'Angelo, Maxwell, Badu, etc.

I was being a dick, so sorry about that. but I am still o_O at the idea that radiohead is the primary jazz influence on glasper.

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 17:04 (nine years ago) link

shakey, get on Robert Glasper. One of the great voices of this generation imo; wonderful composer and musician and an important rudder for the future of jazz and hip hop alike.

Xpost no problem, didn't want to end up Radioheading this thread, which is never a good look, just felt the similar vibes with Game Theory.

so "sock" is just ilx's word for "troll" now ok

some dude, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 17:19 (nine years ago) link

standout track is These Walls for me, cant stop listening to it

flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 17:35 (nine years ago) link

just listened to Jeff Weiss on his podcast trying to explain for 15 minutes why he doesn't like TPAB as much as everyone else, and it was pretty pathetic. A lot of stuff like "Why is he doing that stupid whiny voice on "u"?"

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 17:39 (nine years ago) link

I certainly wasn't implying that Radiohead are Glasper's "primary jazz influence". Don't know about Terrace Martin but the fact that two major contributors to the album are obviously big Radiohead fan boys is a pretty big clue that the primary influence on How Much A Dollar Cost is Pyramid Song itself, rather than some hypothetical common jazz ancestor

Yeah crying 'sock' for the sake of crying sock seems weird to me unless people are gonna start offering theories

I think the sock thing came from people pushing a theory that he was Ott

but he's clearly a UK dude who got kicked off Kanye To The

Auk is Tanuki's sock, he's never copped to it and it was an unnecessary add on
OR
Auk is some opportunistic soul taking on the mantle of Tanuki
OR
Tanuki was always someone else's sock

it's complicated

troll = yes, sock = no

either way all "arguments" proceed from bad faith and false premises so best to move on

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 19:20 (nine years ago) link

ahahaha speaking of Ott i found this in the wikipedia page for Unknown Pleasures yesterday:

Author Chris Ott stated that the album title was likely a reference to Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past.[15]

"I think the sock thing came from people pushing a theory that he was Ott"

would explain a lot.

who here likes Radiohead? we're all T.Swift and Charli XCX fans.

"Pyramid Song" didn't even cross my mind when listening to "How Much A Dollar Cost". I definitely hear the similarity in the chord progression and pieces of the arrangement now that it's been pointed out but the orchestration is different and the swung vs straight beat creates a very different impact for me.
